What software are you using to do the drawings? And, which type of printer is making the parts?

It must have taken along time to print some of those parts?

    Nice work by the way!

When these 3-D printers were just becoming a possible item for Technology Design classes they quoted our school $15,000CDN plus you needed a service contract, a separate ventilated room to use it.

While I only had five years left before retirement and was then not sure if there would be anyone capable to keep the program going? We in the Tech Dept bought equipment for the auto shop and woodshop.

I do not know much about the technical side of 3D printing, but looking at and admiring this model, I do wonder if we are seeing one of the ways forward into the future of model making and certainly in the 'easy-build' kit sector.

    Cheers, Nerys

Being a tight a** I have printed two UV joint's for the Tug OK for low power use but no good for IC, also the main winch. UV joint drilled for M4 prop shaft and 2.3 mm motor shaft with two M4 Allen Socket Hex Head Grub Screws in each.

Perfect! This blog is really helping me to decide on 3d printing. Can I ask which printer you are using. Which materials can you print. Last question, what size of part can you print.
    Thanks.

    1) Printer- Anet a8 cheap and cheerful
    2) All my printing is done with PLA, there are many types of filament available but PLA seems the most popular.
    3) With this printer you can print anything that fits in a 8 inch cube ie 8x8x8inch but printing times can be long. Printing can become a hobby of its own be warned !!!!!!!!!๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜€

Thanks Bill. That machine looks really reasonably priced and the quality of print looks good too.
Is it possible to print with ABS filament?

Yes you can print ABS but a much higher temp. also you need some means of venting off the fumes, you have not got that problem with PLA.
    See this guide filaments-

You are not kidding about the fumes - welcome to the gas chamber - cutting ABS on a laser gives off Cyanide gas - yet people still do it ................

Hi Martin, lets say it's not as easy as sanding wood, I wont be doing it again but I am to far in to stop now, just did it to see if it could be done.
Much prefer wood but will still print small detail parts for next build.

Why does a plastic hull need sealing?

    Hi Martin,
"What filler will you be using Bill.?"
Surely, given a half decent printer (resolution) and the right filament material (maybe also a bottle of acetone or dichloromethane๐Ÿ˜) it shouldn't need any filling at all!?
At worst perhaps a little Plastic Putty to touch up the seams between the five hull parts?
    Cheers, Doug ๐Ÿ˜Ž

    Hi Vice (๐Ÿ˜ฎ๐Ÿ˜),
"I am beginning to wish i had a 3D printer."
I have a 3d'er for three years now.
Haven't even calibrated the damn thing yet ๐Ÿ˜”
A million excuses; no space, no time, no specific project for it ...... NO GUTS!!
Now seriously (๐Ÿ™„) considering printing superstructure for the Springer though.
Bollards and cleats might also be useful.
Can't be bothered to mess with CAD designing for the parts though so I'll see what's available as files on the 3D forums.
Scaling existing parts is fairly easy, the learning curve for designing from scratch is longer and steeperโ˜น๏ธ

    Agreed Vice,
That's one of the main, and oldest of the 3D forums/exchanges I mentioned.
They also have links to guys who will print stuff for you; e.g. Shapeways or private guys with a little 'sideline'.
