    ๐Ÿ“ First 3D printed figure!
    3 hours ago by figtree7nts ( Admiral)

    Hi All,

I have an STL file of a male figure standing!

I'd like to use it for my newly acquired yacht!

Problem is I don't know how to scale it to 1:20th scale!

So, my question is how tall would a figure be at 1:20th scale!

I'm currently printing it to a height of 80mm!

    Cheers, Ed

PS, I have been helped I now know how tall the figure has to be!

    ๐Ÿ“ PLA or Not!

I have had so much trouble with that Premium PLA!

I got it touch with one of my good friends!

Who more advanced in 3D printing!

And he has informed me that.

That Premium PLA is designed for high end 3D printers!

And my Ender 3D printer can't handle.

    That Premium PLA!

So, in the bin it goes!

As I can't work with it!

I have had success with the Current PLA I'm using!

Live and learn, Live and Learn!

Does anybody have a high end 3D printer!

I'll post this Premium stuff to you!

    No Charge! LOL!

OK, So I ordered some more PLA in white!

But, I have increased the bed temp this has helped!

As I was trying to print the Dough Boy Figure!

I attempted this about 3 times!

Using this Premium PLA the setting where just not right!

    So, upon recommendation from Martin555!

We tinkered with the settings to the Extruder and then the build bed!

I now have the Printer set to 215 degrees Celsius!
And the print bed at 70 degrees Celsius!

IT's now working as it should!

I will try another object to print!

To see if indeed the setting are right!

    Thanks, Martin555!

    Hi Peter,
    Not guilty.
Some time ago i did quite a bit of research into 3DPrinters.

It was then that i realised it was not for me.

The time it takes to do some of these prints i could make one by hand.

    Hi Michael,

You are a great wooden model boater!
    I envy your skills!

But, I on the other hand like to use Plastic for my builds!

As, I find working with wood very challenging!

I also don't have the means to work on wooded boats!

So, when the 3D printers came out!

I was very reluctant to purchase!

But, I have purchased one !

I find it very relaxing watching it print an object!

Who knows maybe some day I'll build a Wooden model!

But, till then I stick to what I like!

    Good o' Plastic............

"The time it takes to do some of these prints i could make one by hand."
That is also my conclusion thus far Martin.๐Ÿ‘
Especially if I only need a 'one off' or a few of something.
I might have a look for some 2cm Flak guns though, I could use a bundle to refit my Graf Spee.
That's what I meant by 'find the need'!
I'm getting the impression that 3D printing develops into a hobby in itself, rather than a means to an end, and begins to take the upper hand.

    Doug,
As you say it could turn into a hobby in itself.
I have seen some really fantastic things printed.
Unfortunately for me i just don't have the patience to learn the things that are involved as i hate computers.

Ed on the other hand is starting to get some good results, and as he has said there is a lot to it.
Soon it will all click in to place and he will be printing lots of boat fittings and you never know he could end up printing some bits and pieces for other site members.

I have a 3d printer but I do not look at it as a replacement for any modelling but just another tool. To make unique parts, you also need to learn 3d modeling. I think there is a place for a 3d printer especially for those of us not so skillful in the practical side as some others. Time is another luxury for those of us that have to work all day. I, for instance, have little time for modeling at the moment but am quite happy to let the printer work all day to produce something useful. At the moment I am still playing to learn more about it but I must agree with Ed, when all goes well it is great fun to watch the part develop.

    ๐Ÿ“ Which PLA?

On my many adventure with my 3D Printer!

    You soon learn all PLA's.
    Are not the same!

And they don't act the same!

OK, I had ordered some creality PLA in white!
It worked great! What a treat to see it work!

But, this is the same spool that started to crack!

So, I looked around for some more PLA!

    I found some!

It even says "PREMIUM" on it!

So I ordered some about $25.00 a spool!

Anyway, This stuff just doesn't work like the Creality stuff!

I even raised the temp on the bed by 5 degrees!

    It just ain't working!

But, I have a whole spool to experiment with!

And yes it comes with recommendations for temps!

But, even setting up the temps as recommended.

    It just ain't working!

I'll keep on trying till I sort it out!

    Hi Folks
Having read many of your comments, can I try and put a positive note on 3D printing.

I knew nothing about it when I purchased an Ender 3 Pro just after Ed bought his. In that time I have successfully printed quite a few model boat fittings - Bofors, vents, lifeboats etc., from Thingyverse, using Cura software to slice and re-scale (if necessary).
I have also upgraded to a silent motherboard and a dual drive extruder, with great help from YouTube.
Like you Ed, my first purchase of filament kept breaking so I am now using this - https://www.amazon.co.uk/1-75mm-Black-PLA-Printer-Filament/d... with no breakages so far.
To date, touch wood, I have had no problems and have really enjoyed the experience.
    Steve

Ps. Please don't take this as blowing my own trumpet, it's trying to encourage those who are thinking of going for it.

I use Sunla 1.75mm filament. You have to watch the processing melt temperature on every reel as they do vary with colour. The white, for instance, processes at 190 to 210- degrees and the Orange, 200 to 230. I have found differing results with each different colour as well. White seems to print most things but I have had considerable difficulty with gold and orange. I have had to increase the nozzle temperature to around 225 to get anywhere.
I keep playing. I have loads of 1:32 scale oil drums made in different colours now. Good for the Scalextric but no good for the nerves.๐Ÿ˜

    ๐Ÿ“ Fan goes Caput!

    Hi All,

    I'm back, 3D Printing again!

I thought the Extruder fan was going bad!
But, it wasn't the Extruder fan making noise!

It was actually the fan that cools.
    Down the mother board area!

I did an internet search for a replacement fan!
Trouble is there no longer available!

I wonder why, This is a very important fan!

    But, luckily I had purchased.
    Replacement fans for the Extruder!

So, What I did was canalized fans!
OK, actually what I did was replace the bad fan.

    With a known good fan!

But, I had to cut the pigtails coming out of the bad fan.
Which had a connector on it!

I soldered both ends together making sure to stagger where the solder joints would be on the wire!

I also use heat shrink tubing to make it look neat!
Even though no one will ever see the repair!

My advice is order Extruder fans!
As the fans on the 3D Printer go bad!

    As for 3D Printing.
I'm still looking for something of interest!

    Cheers, All!

Hi Ed, sorry to hear your having 3D problems again, it appears what your saying is that the mother board fan has Kaput, do you mean the power unit fan? if not, mine is different to yours, have only noticed the last couple of days, that mine is a Ender 3 pro, don't know what differences there are, but there are a few I'm informed, my first print will be some vents in a few scales, will post as and when they are finished.๐Ÿ˜Š

Get it out of that bin bag and have a go Doug. The slicers are relatively easy to use, even I can do it, and you can get loads of good things to try ready modeled on `Thingyverse` and others for free.
It is a little frustrating at times but fiddling with the settings a bit, you soon get the hang of what works and what does not.
Fusion 360 is free 3d software. You can model parts with this. It is not too easy to get the hang of but there are a lot of tutorial videos on youtube. I will start lessons soon.

    Ho no I ain't Ed๐Ÿ˜‰
It was a Tchibo special offer and came fully assembled apart from a few external bits like the spool holder and filament guide. No great shakes๐Ÿ˜€
All I had to do was find space for it and calibrate it๐Ÿค”
Having been moved it will need re-calibrating now anyway.

"Exactly why I haven't wasted my money on one Doug, if you're gonna spend a grand, you'd better have a use for it๐Ÿ˜"
Wasn't a grand JB, only โ‚ฌ200 so I figured it might be worth a bash.
Oh!๐Ÿ˜ฎ Did you mean your funny $ thingamajigs!?๐Ÿ˜

    Peter,
"The slicers are relatively easy to use, even I can do it, and you can get loads of good things to try ready modeled on `Thingyverse` and others for free."
Very likely Peter, but first I gotta find something worth slicing, and not angels, sharks or other dust collectors, or another version of those odd wheely things that were all the rage a while ago. Or even things I can knock up in 5 minutes from plasticard or a chunk of ply, like servo holders etc๐Ÿค”

No it not the power unit fan!
It the fan that cool off the mother board area!

It's on the front bottom of where the mother board is!

    Hi all,

I just wanted to point out.
That my Extruder fan has started to whine!

I have gone ahead and purchased a replacement!

The replacement pack comes with both Extruder fans!

There being 2 they are marked.
    By different color wires!

Guess they knew what they were doing!

I may end up replacing the fan soon!

As I don't like the way it's performing!

So, when I do the replacing.

I'll Blog it here on this Blog!

    Hi Ed
Glad to hear that you are back up and running and printing again.

I have just upgraded my printer with this:-

    Creality 3Dยฎ Upgraded Supersilent 24V Super Silent Mainboard Motherboard With TMC2208 Driver For Ender-3 / Ender-3 Pro 3D Printer - Ender-3
    which I got from Bangood

Two of the main advantages are that it takes all the noise out of the stepper motors, and has a built in boot loader.
The boot loader means that I can easily upgrade the firmware .
It is a straight replacement with the existing motherboard and you will find plenty of help installing it on YouTube.

The wife see's I can now do 3D printing!
So she asked me to print an Angel for her!

I found the Angel on Thingyverse!

But, there's a problem with this little Angel!

When you go to print it.
It print to a size of about 10mm tall!

So, using Cura I was able to increase.
It's size to to 60mm tall!

    Which was great!
But, As this little Angel is very narrow!
It tends to come off the Build Plate!

So, I used some Nano Polymer Adhesive from Vision Miners!

This glue did help to keep the Angel from coming off the Build Plate!

Having used the Nano Polymer Adhesive.
I was successful in printing this little Angel!

Sometimes you need help with the Build sticking to the Build Plate!

    Nano Polymer Adhesive helped me!!!

Benchy is a test print of a boat!

So, I printed it but to my surprise.
It didn't print out currently the first time!

    I had used Ultimaker Cura!
But, I had one setting wrong!
    The Support placement was incorrect!

So, I set it for Touching Build Plate!
    And that helped!

As you can see the Print that's in White PLA.
Has Support inside the Pilot House!
    That's wrong!

But, after changing the the setting to Touching Build Plate!
    It was then Correct!
As you can see from the Orange PLA Print!

It's amazing how one little setting can change the outcome of a print!

Every day is a learning day ๐Ÿ˜Š Well done for figuring it out. Look for tree supports as they can be a lot more useful at times.

Thing with Benchy however is that is should be printed without support as a test for the printer.

You can now print the add-ons like smoke and make yours even more special ๐Ÿ‘

I'm currently using Filament from a company called.
Matter Hackers they sell all sorts of Filament!

I ordered some white PLA to replace.
Some white PLA I had ordered from Banggood!

Which kept on snapping most likely old stock!
As I and Martin555 had spoken about it!
And Martin555 helped me to realize.
It has to be old stock!

Anyway, I had looked on the Matter Hacker website.
But, They did have just regular White PLA!

So, I ordered some "Raised3D Premium PLA"!
Which, has to be heated to 210 Degrees Celsius!

But, as you use it after about 2 hours or so!
It let off a very bad smell!

I had to leave the area!
And I turned on my Air Conditioner!
This helped to circulate the air in the room!

This is the first time this happens!
But, I have heard of this happening to others.
    Who use 3D printers!

I have had to switch back to the PLA that was Snapping!
Also this PLA is used at 200 Degrees Celsius!
    And does not smell!

    Hi Pete,

I too had heard of the smell coming from ABS!
    But, this was PLA!
    Not sure why this happened!

Maybe had the Nozzle too high of temp!
But, the PLA wouldn't flow correctly at 200 Degrees!

So, I upped the temp to 210 Degrees!
Then the PLA started to flow correctly!

But, the Smell was too intense!โ˜น๏ธ

So, for now using the Old White PLA!
I just hope it doesn't snap while printing!!!!

    Hi Ed.
Strange about the smell. Bus the melt head overheating and burning the filament.
As for ABS, it is not only the normal smell is a problem, for me and many others, it makes the throat sore as well. Not very nice when exposed for a while.

    Hi Ed

You certainly are having a fun start to 3D printing. Can I suggest that the smell you are getting isn't from the new filament but the old filament that I think is still clogging your nozzle. The increase in temp you did is likely to be burning the clog. I did suggest to you before that the breaking filament was caused by the remains of your original clog in the nozzle. 210C is to be honest a bit high for standard PLA. There are plenty of guides online showing you the best way to remove/clean your nozzle & hotend.

With regard to your bed levelling where you used a sheet of paper & got better prints - paper is an insulator & also burns... if needing to use a spacer under the bed, please use aluminium foil. This will not only not burn but will allow better heat transfer to your bed, which could save you having to bump the bed temp like you did. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Cleaning the bed is really important too - I use IPA but a good clean with soapy water does work too. That might improve your adhesion.

Hope this helps a bit & don't get sucked into the hole where people tell you to change everything on your printer.. the Ender 3 is a good solid printer out of the box. Constant learning will come with being an owner ๐Ÿ˜
