Sail control of RRS Discovery . Help required

I have spoken to Doug and he used articles in Model Boats. My database identifies the October 1977 issue of Model Boats with an article about "Radio Control of Square Rigged Ships". There were more but I can not find them at the moment. There is no easy answer to your question as this is a rather specialised section of our hobby and no one source of info will answer all your questions. Doug did mention that the masts need to pivot 60 deg each side ( ie 120deg in total) if you are ever to turn to port or starboard. I am attaching some pics of his clipper

Brilliant, I have found an article in model boat magazine which shows a way of doing it. But it has raised more questions. Look forward to his advice and recommendations.

Sail control of RRS Discovery . Help required

Hi Robert
Sqare rigged ships look magnificent on the water but do require a lot of experience sailing model yachts. We have a member in my club who has successfully sailed several such models using his own designs for controlling the sails. He also uses bolt on keels similar to a yacht as they are quite top heavy. Does the whaling ship you are modelling have a name? Doug has extensive records of all types of sailing ships and if he knows what you are intending to build I'm sure he will be more than willing to give advice on sail control.

As long as I am not steppinon anyone's toes or breaking some long standing ethical standard,
there is a long thread on R/C Groups dedicated to rigging operational R/C square riggers. it can be found here:

Sail control of RRS Discovery . Help required

Hi All
Is there any build blogs that show how to control a square rigged boat using radio control.
I have plans of a whaling ship which is very similar rig to the RRS discovery.
Luckily I can visit the ship in Dundee to get details of the rigging, etc.
I have a book on controlling this type of rigging but it seems very complicated.
Any help and advice welcome.
Thanks in advance.
Robert.
