Rowing Dinghy 1/24 scale

Hi johnf
I have used the
cover it with a tarp
wheeze before on a Billings Yawl where I didnt like the pre formed plastic dinghy supplied, I got away with it in that occasion, also carrying the dinghy on deck upside down on a Clyde Puffer but that is not going to be an option on this build where the dinghy is on davits hanging from the transom. Nice thought though and thanks.

Rowing Dinghy 1/24 scale

I would like to thank all of you for your helpful ideas to enable me to get a suitable dinghy for my BOC build, if I don`t use them this time I will certainly consider them for a future project and some of your building techniques are simply amazing.
Again many thanks ChrisG

Rowing Dinghy 1/24 scale

I have just remembered the old gummed paper method where the hull is 'laid up' on a former with gummed parcel tape, (still available) a surprisingly rigid structure can be made this way.
If it don't fit, use a hammer to make it fit....

Rowing Dinghy 1/24 scale

I use 1mm ply or even card for planks. I do cheat with the rebates in the keel & stem I stick a backing piece each side back about half way

Hello ColinH
You are very kind, I would be very interested if you have a suitable dinghy for my model. Look forward to hearing from you when you return.
I have spent hours deliberating on "scale" and continue to doubt my thinking on the subject, I have never had a logical brain so to have your comment that my understanding of 1/24 is correct has made me feel very happy.
Take care and many thanks ChrisG

Rowing Dinghy 1/24 scale

Ron. It is not to difficult to build a clinker boat. I have made 12 in scales from 3/4 -1ft down to 1/4 - 1ft. Just build as in full size. Most important only the first & last planks are straight all others are shaped.

In the inch system a 1/24 scale means 1/2" equates to 1 foot. So a 36 inch model would equate to a 72 foot full size boat.

Once you have found a plan you can scale it to suit your needs. To aid building, first carve a block to the correct shape and giv it several coats of varnish. Cut a slot for the keel, Cut a keel from your favorite wood, coat the carved 'plug' with plenty of wac or clingfilm then build up the clinker built hull. Leave to dry for several days then carefully remove the shell from the former and fit out in the usual way...

Rowing Dinghy 1/24 scale

Hi Chris,

Apart from very elusive commercial offerings of variable quality; please remember that dinghies on larger craft are always stored upside-down; or upright covered by a tarpaulin.

Therefore I have found that a simple soft balsa " plug" can easily be covered with strips of thin card to simulate clinker build and then stowed in the boat as per the real thing.

With two soft blocks either side of a harder keel, with a cloth cover - it is not too difficult. Definitely worth a try!

With best wishes. Dr John F. Leeds and Bradford. BBC. 😊😊😊

Rowing Dinghy 1/24 scale

Good evening Chris,
That's definitely 1/24th scale. I have a few model clinker built dinghies of that scale, if I can find a 5 inch one would you be interested.
I am away till Wednesday afternoon, but will check my model store when I get home.
As I am in the middle of reducing my model collection to make it more manageable for shows.
Cheers Colin.
Fair winds and calm waters,
COLIN.

Rowing Dinghy 1/24 scale

Hello Ron
The model that this dinghy is to be used with is 1/24 scale and is +/- 28 inches long, on the plan the dinghy is seen to be 125mm or 5 inches.
The plan is shown to be half an inch to one foot.
Am I now confused ?

1 inch of length on a model would represent 24 inches on the real boat, or 1/2” equals 1 ft.

Thanks Neil
Yes I have just looked at their site and they have some suitable plastic hulls which look ok, I intend to hang on for something wood for a while. I have bought from MMM in the past in fact attended one of their Christmas markets some years ago and I agree with you they are very good.
Thanks ChrisG

Rowing Dinghy 1/24 scale

I need help to source a 1/24 scale 10 foot clinker built rowing dinghy to hang off the stern of my current build.
I will consider a kit which must be wood or a plan to scratch build from. I have seen on Ebay a finished resin model which looks quite good and if need be will have to do but I really want it to be in keeping with the build.
I am not clever enough to draw a plan so if anyone can help I will be most grateful.
