ChrisF,
That's one of the beauties of cruising the Norfolk Broads, you don't have to mess around with locks. There are a couple of quite low bridges, with large boats at both Wroxham and Potter Heigham those two there is a pilot available to get you under the bridge. My boat I had was 21ft and it would just go under both of them at high tide. I really do miss the boat at times. It was a great pick me up if I ever felt a bit down. Also the fishing up there I really loved that.

We spent a week in the Norfolk Broads a couple of years ago and hired a boat for the day. Used to have a cruiser and speedboat in the family many years ago and would have loved to have had another cruiser but nowhere to keep one now.

Two family members have narrowboats but not my cup of tea. Not helped by having long flights of locks in both directions which take a long time to get through!

PhilH,
That is my Huntsman that I built way back in 1982. She has a hard life. I push my boats to the limit. I used to over power them when I ran IC engines. These brushless motors are now more powerful than IC's. It's just the cost of getting decent LiPo's. Now I am retired funds are not so available. I used to do extra overtime to fund these costly habits. Now I seem to have to sell of some of my boats or other bit's on Ebay to raise the money to but things. Eight years of retirement and enjoying not working. I have just sent off to China for a couple of 4mm flexi shafts, I cannot afford the cost's of our model shops for some of my bit's.

This is my Huntsman R/C out on the River Thurne up on the Norfolk Broads. These were taken back in 2004, she is stuck out in my shed and she has a small leak on the rear Port corner. I plan to upgrade the 550 brushed motor with a Brushless motor. She then might lift off the water a bit more. She was running on a quite heavy 12volt lead acid battery. Next time (when I get around to it) she will run on a LiPo battery. I actually got to give it a run 3/4s of a mile op river against the tide and then under the Potter Heigham Bridge and into the boat yard where I used to moor my boat that we chased her with. The last picture was my boat that I chased the Huntsman with I had for 20 yrs in Potter Heigham Broads Haven Boatyard.

HI, PhilH, I have in my shed a fibreglass Huntsman Hull I purchased from Anglia Model Shop in Gorlstone, Norfolk (A.M.S.)
just before it shut down. It has a deck fixed to it and I got it for the measly sum of £15.00.
I have torn the Rota Cuff in Both of my shoulders, I know the feeling you have. I had the right shoulder don 15 yrs ago and since then I have torn it again beyond repair. I was getting the left shoulder sorted just as Covid started, since then I haven't been able to get anything done with the hospital .

Hi back again 😂😂
Found a new trick to keep missus in the dark about supplies , she sleeps in late so I have been getting up early and meeting post lady building new boat so streams of new fittings🤣🤣.
The real reason why been getting up earlier lately is I have bad back lots of pain(don't start me on that) and ripped a tendon in left shoulder the one I normally sleep on 🙄.

Hi Boatshed - that's interesting that you built one of the original kits. I did ask Dave Milbourn once why he used the odd scale of 1:11 but can't remember if he gave me a definitive answer. Sadly I can't ask him again.

I did wonder if it was because drawings were already available at a scale of 1:12 and they wanted to avoid any copyright issues? Or maybe they just wanted a bigger model for IC power which was common then.

The scale of 1:11 was maintained through the kits progress to Precedent (Balsacraft) and finally Anglia Model Products where production finished when the business closed. Production of the big 47" version continues at SLEC of course with modifications having been made to the kit.

Thanks for posting up the Modav build leaflet, very interesting.

Hi ChrisF,
My first Built Huntsman was a Model Avionics Huntsman. I went to their factory and bought it direct from them. They said they didn't usually do that but when I explained that my local model shop was unable to get me one they gave in and sold me one. I think? (but not 100% sure,) I still have the build instructions for it. I might have sent them on to someone else on here by post. But I do have a folder on my computer here with them. I don't know if you are interested but I am inserting them on here for you. It gives you the scale for the Fairey Huntsman 31 Boat, for 34" model boat.

Here is a winch I recently built. I have only bench tested it so far. It runs on a 12 volt 27 RPM motor from amazon and a small esc. I also used some sand paper from a hand sander, fuzzy side against the sand paper side to to act as a break out clutch so I don't rip the anchor haws if I miss time the shut off.

Phil - you could run it on 7.2 volts and it should be Ok. If you do feel that it needs a bit more speed you could get a higher volt battery later. Are your batteries NiMh?

I suggested that one as it's a good compromise between torque and revs. You could go for a higher kv motor e.g. 1450 or 1500kv etc. but the torque and power output is usually less.

I wrote a comprehensive blog on my efforts here, see link below.

Phil - are you Ok with using Lipos? I use mainly 3S (11.1 volt) at 4000 mAh to give a decent run time. Higher mAh even better but they get more expensive.

I have Giant Power from the Component Shop but Overlander and Turnigy are good as well.

These are most likely Precedent kits at 34", scale 1:11, for the Fairey Huntsman 31. I say most likely as they were first produced by Modav (Model Avionics) which then became Precedent with the latter being the most common.

There was a kit for the Huntsman 28 (which is quite a bit different) produced by Veron at 42", scale 1:8.

Painted the super structure and will be fitting all extra parts as soon I get the masking of and wife gives me permission to go and play 🤣🤣

Phil - assuming yours is 34" as well and one motor I'd suggest something like an Overlander (only because I use them) 3542/05 1250kv running on 3S and a 40/45mm prop.

Nigel, bit of food for thought here, as you are using two propshafts, which you may have already thought of/be aware of.

Natural assumption is to position the propshafts midway between the chine and keel but on the full-sized boat and at least one model build I've seen, the prop shafts are positioned closer to the keel. Maybe on the full-sized it's to physically accommodate the two big engines and keep the weight low but also maybe to reduce the possibility of a prop coming out of the water on fast tight turns which is probably more likely on a model.

In the 34" model build the propshafts were about 80mm apart and positioned to avoid the strakes.

I have bought two of the smallest brushless motors that SLEC have. Outrunners for torque. Two 20 amp ESCs with reverse. Plus two 40mm props
A left and a right.
Two medium rudders.
Two P-brackets.
Lots to do!

I have an old abandoned Precedent 34”
Hull and top.
My first task is to fill in the holes for single motor and create a twin motor model.
I tested positive for Covid so I will pause for a day or two.
I watched YouTube to see how brushless transformed performance. I’m going to choose two small motors.

Brushless motor and LiPo battery would give the best performance but not everyone likes using them.

Is yours the 34" version?
