I also like to make things from scratch but it was only three years ago that I acquired my own bandsaw. What a revelation ! The ability to cut thin laths has transformed my model making. Not only does it enable me to produce laths as thin as 2mm, but then cut them into 2 x 2 strips. If you have the space on your bench I highly recommend getting a bandsaw. Mine is an inexpensive starter model bit it can handle timber up to 60mm thick, and with just two different blades, one with 6 teeth per inch, one with 12, I can make coarse or fine cuts which are good for modelling. ๐

Iโve meaning to post this for a long time. I know many people prefer kits but I like to build the whole thing from scratch. Often I need to cut wood into consistent long thin strips, like for planking I do this with either table saw or bandsaw, this technique works for both. I am using a full size table saw but it will as well for a smaller saw.
Using the rip fence in the traditional way doesnโt work too well. It difficult to run thin strips and dangerous.
This simple jig makes it safe and easy, you are actually using the โoff cutโ Simply cut a piece of wood to an accurate known dimension. Add a small support piece to one end and you are good to go. Set the rip fence to known dimension plus the size of strip you want. In the video I am cutting 1/8 inch thick strips.
