Cheers Ed, I wondered what the point of restoring a loco to 3' 6" gauge as there is nowhere in the UK that I know of where it could run. And that is apart from its' enormous size and weight!

Hi EdW, on my visit to the Quainton railway society they have a South African railways engine being restored.
The link gives details. Pretty big when close up and a good few years befored it will go back into steam.
Is this the type in your post?
Back in April I had a ride behind a Beyer-Garrett No, 6209, that was in Australia.

South Africa run their railways on 3โ€™6โ€ which is regarded as โ€œnarrow gaugeโ€ internationally.
Up to the 80s many routes were still on steam and some of the locos were really impressive โ€œbeastsโ€

Hi all I had a great day out at Quainton preserved railway. There was a historic vehucle gathering and our club day out organisor had also set up a tour of the workshops.

With wives etc, there were 21 of us, so although out for the day, you kept bumping into friends.
We left a bit after three as my legs were more tired than I was, but climbing stairs and walking over rough ground takes its toll.

Most of the locos were the small ones, 0-4-0 and 0-6-0 tankers and some ready to go others years away from that.
They seem to have evolved a good business model and are thriving while grant maintained set ups are forever worrying about their grants.
Much sunnier than expected and nice to be out with our daughter.

Razor..., et al. This forum seems to fit all, from those with little time on their hands to those who can get things done because they have the time to apply their skills to projects. Not specific to dads, all have the opportunity to participate, hopefully enjoying this fun hobby.

Hope everyone had a great father's day whatever you've been up to. Spent the morning at the lake, received a t-shirt from the cat ๐Ÿˆ and dog ๐Ÿ• followed by an Indian takeaway in the evening and finally a call from my daughter.๐Ÿ˜Š

Thanks Roy. Trains on the "standard gauge" still amaze me, especially the big multi-unit diesels hauling freight at fairly high speeds going around curves. Don't see many trains where I am located, one freight at night per week day. I grew up in NY and rode the subways every day to high school.

Funny story... many years ago we rode the "bullet train" to visit friends. The people over there did not know it was called the bullet train, only as the Shinkansen Express.

Been on subways in London, Munich, Brussels (trains), we're all interesting. Most interesting experience was in Washington DC. We were trapped in a station (only ones) when the money train came in. So many serious guards, we dared not to move an inch.

Well, I better get back to model boats before I get kicked off this forum.

I've had cards. gifts and text messages, but otherwise I've spent the day alone (as usual). At least you get things done on a day like that, without interruption.
I hope every Dad has enjoyed his day, whatever you've done.
