That cartoon figure always made me smile, and I must have drawn a version of it many times over the years attached to notes 👍

He has a muliple personality Doug?

He is still known as Kilroy over here, and is often accompanied with the phrase from WW 2 times “Kilroy was here “

Also known as Mr Chad and Foo .

His origins are debated but he first appeared during the Second World War when he was often found drawn or painted on almost anything - anywhere, to identify American presence.

Hi Bob,
I may live 'over here' but I am English and still carry a British passport😉
I still know the little guy as Chad, but seems he coalesced with Kilroy at some point.
Mr Chad was always complaining about war shortages; Wot NO soap? Wot NO sugar? etc etc.

"Kilroy was here is a meme that became popular during World War II, typically seen in graffiti – though it predates both the terms 'meme' itself, as well as modern usage of 'graffiti', by several decades.[1][2] Its origin is debated, but the phrase and the distinctive accompanying doodle became associated with American G.I.s in the 1940s: a bald-headed man (sometimes depicted as having a few hairs) with a prominent nose peeking over a wall with his fingers clutching the wall.

"Mr Chad" or just "Chad" was the version that became popular in the United Kingdom. The character of Chad may have been derived from a British cartoonist in 1938, possibly pre-dating "Kilroy was here". According to Dave Wilton, "Some time during the war, Chad and Kilroy met, and in the spirit of Allied unity merged, with the British drawing appearing over the American phrase."[3] Other names for the character include Smoe, Clem, Flywheel, Private Snoops, Overby, Eugene the Jeep, Scabooch, and Sapo.

According to Charles Panati, "The outrageousness of the graffiti was not so much what it said, but where it turned up."[4] It is not known if there was an actual person named Kilroy who inspired the graffiti, although there have been claims over the years. "

Cheers, Doug😎

Chad was what I was alluding to when I posted "What no video!" on another thread. I did think about adding the cartoon as shown by Doug, which like Bob, I drew many times when I was young.

I also remember Kilroy but only from seeing it written as "Kilroy was here". I didn't know there was a connection between the two.

I looked at 3 offerings cars, No laptops No, iPhones No, and I did not even like the RC set!
However Chad made me smile etc.

I was reminded of Itma and Much binding in the Marsh. The former was all waiting for associated catch phrases, some of which would be non-woke today. But as the miserable char lady would say. "Its being so cheerful that keeps me going".

The one liners and sketches were so fast in delivery that Gen Z would not be able to keep up.

A point made by Aless.... was the speed you/we get to move up the promotion ladder. Will there be 25 Fleet Admirals and not a leading seaman in sight?

When at my previous address there was a lady who used to take a donation box around to support retired or discharged seaman. I did mention the unfortunate wording but either the words had gone above her head or she was pulling our legs and daring us to comment.

I think it would be nice to do something for charity - I have it in my will all my boats are auctioned and the proceeds go to a maritime charity

With the board system perhaps it would be good to remove the ladder board - I do take it very seriously but I never look up the answer online unless I get it wrong - you can see this as I have more that my fair share wrong
I openly admit I have not idea when it comes to merchant ship conditions and rules or racing rules my expertise is big sailing ships at least 100ft long and warships

Not just the Royal Navy, unfortunately. Many orchestra conductors and few musicians is a trend in many armed forces and police forces.

Hi Pat, noting the number of acquisitions you are making I presume you are aware of the sad and too low value that is put on working models. So at your own demise will there be much value placed on your fleet ?

Museums have strict guidelines on the construction of models they take in as looking after them is expensive. As a club we are getting almost embarrassed trying to find homes for models let alone selling them.

Anyone buying one of 'our' models also has to know how they work and how to look after them. One person I know bought a couple of RC model boats and every time he came out with them they were starting to fall apart with no attempt at fixing anything. Not seen them now for years!

I know what you are saying Roy but some of my models have been made by the Dockyard Museum in Portsmouth and they cost me a fortune so I keep them in good condition- I have a lot so if one gets sailed a couple of times a year now that’s about it - unfortunately my fingers do not work well now so I cant build myself so I have to source elseware anyway best of luck - due to all this unnecessary bitterness I will not be making anymore public posts
Stay safe and enjoy - I have no doubt the will have ongoing skits about ai

Hi Pat I wish you had told us of the museum models, it did appear that you might be hoovering up models. I do handle models usually from passed members estates and sometimes outsiders who contact us.
Recently I took on several models that had to be disposed of by a daughter. She clearly loved her dad and I told her where the models had gone and we organized some videos of them refurbed and running again. She was very happy, which makes my time freely given that much richer and worth while for me.

So tell us where they came from Pat all interesting and a nice piece of history.
Best
