Brass should only be used if the boiler is low pressure, less than 30psi, and less than 3โ€ in diameter. The brass will degrade over time. The best material for small boilers is copper a with silver soldered joints. Larger boilers that are structural, as in traction engines are normally steel.
Tried to find my book on boiler rules but cannot find it at the moment.

    Hi Algon,
As far as I am aware the major reason Brass is not used for boiler and boiler fitting construction when it is in direct contact with steam is due to the Zink leaching out into the steam which eventually leads to the Brass "crumbling". A sacrificial anode of Zink will get around this problem.

Nice looking Boiler and engine, I guess the fuel would have been solid.

    Cheers,
    Stephen.

Hard to say what the reason was for his material choice. Maybe just the materials he had available to him at work.
I believe from the quality of the D10 he built along with the boiler that he was a good machinist. But maybe just not a "model engineer".

I wonder if the guy that put this together was short sighted, hence the size of the pressure gauge. I agree that copper is the norm when it comes to boiler building, but on the other hand Saito have been using brass for every thing boilers, spirit burners and engines since the 1950s.

When you say "ALL brass", that would include the pressure vessel. For several reasons, thermal conductivity among them, copper is the proper boiler material. No knowledgable model engineer that I know of would construct a brass boiler. That was as true in the late 40's/early 50's, when you believe what you have was constructed, as it is today.

Well the boiler has cleaned up well. Still rounding up fittings to perform a hydro static pressure.
Stuart D10 cleaned up well too!

Yes, ALL brass. I think it was home built by the previous owner who was a machinist by trade. Design similar in some ways to a Stuart 501 but also with some differences.
I will post more as I get it cleaned up and pressure tested

Is the pressure vessel also brass?
If it don't fit, use a hammer to make it fit....

Yes the safety valve looks to be Stuart but I have never seen a Stuart boiler like this. I have a couple of 501's and the 5 tubes on this one look very much like the 501. BUT this boiler is ALL brass no copper. Looks to have a couple of stay rods with nuts on either end that tie the end caps to the boiler body. Never seen one like that.

The boiler could be an early stuart judging by the safety valve...
If it don't fit, use a hammer to make it fit....
