Great Picture Lew! And (in some cases) the mooring lines do go through the railings.

I have me uncles Scout. Two strings broke in transport from NY to MA. It’s next on my list when I get back from CA. My Krick Vll sub to assemble n the scout. Unfortunately my uncle wasn’t into RC so no removable superstructure it will be only for display. The Scout I built 20 years ago perished in house fire. While out here I’m doing the Banckert tug my son bought at UK Leeds Hobby shop last Sept when he was on tour with band Chappell Roan there. He did a FaceTime while at store n had me pick a ship. Nice to have grown kids. Almost done on Tug but I need motor. I left two on east coast. Not too many hobby shops here anymore for RC. Pic of Tug. When home I’ll put pic of Scout. I loved building the Scout and the other ship Missouri? Pics of SanFrancisco, Winston Churchill n the Scout behind Hurcules large tug all built by my uncle. My tug here is second pic.

Hi Ron!
On my Scout, which I’ve Christened the “Pacific Trader,” for each large double bit bollard behind the railings there is are two large chock that ride in between breaks in the railings. Also, there are double hawseholes in the bow just forward of the anchor lines and hoist.
Here's a pick sans railings.
👍😉

Ronald, there were so many variations of the Liberty Ships. I did find this REAL photo of the mooring lines, and obviously the lines passed between the stanchions over the almost flush gunwales. Also, I am not vouching for the accuracy of the Dumas kit version of the "American Scout". Being the model is at a small scale, perhaps small details were ommitted, in this case the fairleads.

On a freighter like the American Scout, could someone explain how the ropes would have been brought onboard to secure the ship. Were they passed through the railings?

There are several double bits on the deck and other pieces of equipment.

Lew!
So many thanks for taking the time to take these pix! They are FANTASTIC and will inspire me to get on the stick and get my rigging done!!!!!!!
A definite shot in the arm. Please congratulate Jim on his beautiful "museum scale" build!

Today (Sunday, May 3, 2026) Jim brought his Dumas "American Scout" to the SSMBC meet. This gave me the opportunity to take some close-ups so I am posting them here.

Hh, note that these are not my boats, but belong to my friend Jim. He gets the credit and I will pass that on to him.

I have 2 USS Missouri models. they make a fiberglass hull for it. with such old kits you would have to replace the balsa wood.
I have a Lumba Lumba boat to build yet, ill never get to the Missouri

Lew!
Thanks so much for the spectacular pix! They are an inspiration, as my version, done up as Matson's "Pacific Trader,” is still in drydock! And yes, there is a certain beauty and worth to these old Sterling kits; despite the battles to build them.

I remember my Sterling Chriscraft Buccaneer from the hazy annals of my youth. If I remember correctly it had a thick balsa base with a balsa double hull on the sides.🤔

My uncle and I both built the Scout freighter. Mine was set for RC but perished in house fire. I inherited his when he passed last year. He made his static. I’ll post pics. Not as great as your build but good. I’m building a case for it. I built the Missouri n in agreement the wood wasn’t great. I think I sold that one years ago. I have my Dumas Creole Queen just needs railings done. Motor, RC and smoker all done. This is my 4 th build of it. Previous were sold and one and the same house fire. For years these were the only kits I built. Then European vendors got bought n built. Your Scout is wonderful to see.

In regards to previous posts (Sterling Models, their freighter), I am creating a new subject...

I was talking to fellow SSMBC member Jim at the meet today (March 15, 2026) about the Sterling models. He has two "Sterling Models" that I know of, the American Scout freighter and battleship USS Missouri. Some of his comments:
- The freighter took him about four months to build.
- The high use of Balsa wood is the down side of Sterling models.
- On the Missouri he replace almost all of the Balsa with other wood.

Jim goes into great detail with his models. I'm posting a few of the photos of these two models I had taken at previous SSMBC (Florida, USA) meets.
