I used the "grain of wheat" bulbs that came with the package deal that included the trawler. I should have known better. Perhaps back then the LEDs might not have been small enough for the fixtures. Can't remember. Anyway, I never used the lights except for the initial test. So my plans are to toss the "C" cells idea, and switch the NImh battery with a li-ion pack thus saving weight and devote the weight reduction to ballast low in the hold.

Are the lights LED or bulbs? Either way, you could save some aggregation of removing the alkaline battery pack and replace the connection to your bec on the receiver. A resistor may be needed but that can be determined.
Your conversion is similar to what I have had to do with the kits given to me. Not impossible to achieve, it just takes some imagination, research , and patience.

(I tried to post a photo of the rudder and prop but apparently the gallery comments are for text only )
Here is the photo of the prop and rudder. The prop is probably a little oversized for this kind of boat making it a little fast. So, I just need to ease up on the throttle.
As for the rudder, the axis is about 1/3 the way back as I explained in the comment. This really handles well.
