It depends on the individual, what is classed as unnecessary, I sometimes buy a boat that I like, then after a couple of years, decide to sell it, just losing interest in said boat, we all have our foibles🐶

Usually one collects things that 'might come in handy sometime', shunts them around for 5 to 20 years, then decide it isn't so handy after all, so chuck it away.
The following week you have a use for it,
and have to go out and spend money on a new 'thing'. 😠😠
Something to do with Murphy I believe!

Surely it's only hoarding if you collect unnecessary things.

Thanks Doug for the offer of using your model log list, just got to find all the boats now, loft is full! garage has three yachts in there, plus a couple of BIG RAF boats, will have to take some piccys of them, as not sure what they are, have doubled up on a few of the classics, 3 sea commanders, 2 sea queens, 2 sea rovers, and the usual fire boats in boat scales, most of these need tlc, just need the time to work on them.
btw, I have just been informed by the boss! that I'm a hoarder?

Bet you're really looking forward to Hungary, jammy so and so 👍
Feel free to copy the structure of my spreadsheet.
It'll give you a start and you can easily bend it to suit your needs.
On the other hand it gives you a picture of the true horror of the situation!😮
ALL THAT CASH!! DON'T LET 'ER INDOORS SEE IT!!!!

"so many boats, and many kits to build, I can't let a bargain go by, I tell my wife I'm saving them for when I get to old age, (am there already) she says I will never live long enough to build them, so my reply is, I have have less house jobs/gardening, it give me more time to build boats! "
He he😁 That could have been written by me Peter👍
Except that I abolished the institution of wife after two disasters🤔

Feel free to use my Model Log list XL framework to put your own data in Peter.
Mine grows spasmodically, as I think of new data items to include, such as payload and which RX, motors and ESCs etc from the stash I decided to use for a particular model.
If I get a Round Tuit😉 Saves me having to reinvent the wheel every time😊

You may also notice that the list indicates where I already have etched parts or wooden decks for various models. It's by no means complete but a start!
Cheers, Doug😎

"looks like someone made a start at it then took it apart again."
RATS!Depending on how much damage he did that will reduce it's potential as an original kit.
If you feel you have time then build it, with your usual skill (but don't let any of the yoghurt pot labels show😁) and then advertise it. I would still try first as a kit, you might still get a bit more from an avid builder or just a vintage kit collector😉

I have a similar problem as you Colin, so many boats, and many kits to build, I can't let a bargain go by, I tell my wife I'm saving them for when I get to old age, (am there already) she says I will never live long enough to build them, so my reply is, I have have less house jobs/gardening, it give me more time to build boats! must make a list like Doug, I forget what I have already.😔

We have not been married too long so, at the moment, her in doors likes me to be in the lounge doing my modeling. She won`t allow me to paint in there though. Fussy girl.
I had better make the most of it though as I am sure that the law will change as I have permanently taken over 50% of the dining table.
At my house in Hungary I have built a new ship yard in the garden as I am sure that there will be new legislation passed by the time we retire there.
I will make a list of my models as you have Doug. Should take me about 2 minutes, unless I list only the completed ones. That should take about ten seconds so long as I take a sip of tea half way through.😁
I cannot promise to finish one project before starting another. I know, I tried.

Hi Martin,
If the the original box is in reasonable nick and the kit is complete DON'T BUILD IT!!😮
If you want to make some cash with it it's usually worth much more if it's still As Sold!
Scan around the auction sites first to get an idea of potential value.😉
I may do the same with my older kit and just use the new one.

Hi Doug,
I have an original Matchbox 1/72 scale Flower class corvette, I dread to think how old that is.
Maybe I should make it and sell it to try and raise some model making funds.

That was a year or so ago as well! On the middle bench in the 1st pic my little lathe now sits and the mill had to move stage right! Behind it is a little grinder / polisher.
I still lose stuff despite all the categorising and labelling😝
BTW: Until a recent sort out and clearing of stuff parked on the construction bench I had a box of small to medium scissor clamps on there, nice an' handy. Damned if I can find it now😭
The Borrowers again! Grrrr!

Hi Martin,
The Big Box is one of the original Revell 1/72 Flower Class corvettes, about 30 years old.
The one above it is no longer there. That was (the other) Martin's Piper Cub which he seems to have built in record time😮 (Maybe pranged it by now as well!?)

Would you believe there is another 1/72 Flower Class downstairs???
One of the new Technik kits with some electrical gubbins. (Not worth the extra cost IMO🤔)
A recent acquisition, I must be NUTS, but then that's a prerequisite for model boat builders isn't it 😊
😎
PS Attached my attempt to keep tabs on my Stash! XCEL spreadsheet! Not quite up to date 😔

Guilty as charged Dodgy 😔
Pic shows only about 1/3 of my kit stash; the rest, mostly larger 1/72 to 1/350 kits like USS Enterprise, Bismarck, 2 Colossus class carriers, Titanic, Ark Royal, Exeter and several more, is in the cellar!🤔
Second pic shows some of the racks and bins of components and RC bits and pieces. 😮

The local council moles never fill in properly afterwards. Usually leave a hump or hollow, never flat. Plus I couldn't afford the Tea bill.

Good idea Doug, but I think the landlord wouldn't like it as I've already got the largest plot in the community. Did wonder if it was possible to train moles to excavate me a cellar.

Hi Martin, I have acquired most of my collection from free gifts or bequest.
Apart from 4 boats I haven't bought a boat in years.
Most refurbs are completed by using recycled materials. The only thing that is a regular purchase will be the glues and paints. With occasional electrical equipment. I think my insurance for the boats is my biggest expense.

Hi Colin,
This hobby does have a tendency to turn normal model makers in to collectors/hoarders with an insatiable desire for boats.

Hi guys and gals, I have been given orders from she who must be obeyed.
It is not permitted to accept any more model boats till I have finished the ones I have left to work on.
Apparently I have 17 boats in various stages of disrepair.
Plus three kits awaiting completion.
As well as the 22 vintage showing boats and the six ready to sail.
We also have my wife's 3 boats waiting for me to sort out the radio gear.
And finally my son and grandsons 3 boats in the process of being built.
Well I suppose it had to happen one day, ah well if I ever mention collecting another boat please give me a swift kick in the shins and remind me of the rules.
Cheers Colin.
