Jb,
If you thrash your boat like that you will have to fit a glass bottom so you can see what you are about to crash into LOL!

This is what you guys can expect and more when you get out of lock-up, - sorry,-I meant lock down😁
We are at level 2 and allowed to shop now,- (spacing, hand washing, signing in etc still applies) but we are almost free! ( just watch it come back now the country's broke) Went out to get some bits and this is what I found, - at all these local shopping malls, supermarkets, building supply shops etc, car parks were completely full (pics are on a normal Monday last April for comparison) These also have big underground carparks which were full as well. Took me about 10mins of circulating to find a park (along with a hundred others) Never seen anything like it, - even a Saturday is not that bad! You'll need to get up early!

Barbers have been creaming it and have had queues starting at 6am. We've just had the big spendy budget and borrowed/printed billions to give away,- so the young'uns will be paying it back most of their lives, say "THANKS WUHAN" kids ! There're only 4.5m of us here and about 3m working, -(now thousands exra on the dole queue and more to come,) how's that going to happen in a lifetime?! Possibly no national airline, no tourism for who knows how long,- (one of our major industries), no jobs, no money, and people say what a good job the govt has done?! Telling people they are going to build 10,000 state houses,- their last brilliant 100,000 house building scheme managed about 300! There aren't enough builders and we can't import any so how will that work?? MORONS

We already have people living in cars, garages and sheds (a local beach just over the hill looks like a tent town at the moment!) and they hadn't found houses for them before this happened ! just ridiculous. Anyhoo, enough depressing 'carp' (edited for Mike😁) back to doing more fun stuff while I still can. Waiting for a good day so I can get out in the dinghy for a spot of fish slaughtering, and give the Chinger outboard a sound thrashing (my way of giving something back)😊😁⛵🚤

will have to be something really crazy.
As you all know i go through these spells of madness, i think it is genetic LOL!!!
Or i am just mad?

As for your "Little Hop" project Doug, I am really looking forward to seeing it.
I really hope you can get past the template stage without too much trouble.

"Maybe i will have do something crazy like my fish type projects."
Now there's a thought!
You'd be the natural choice to make Jaws to go with Sky's superb Orca Martin👍

Apropos paper templates ...
I'm at the same stage of my possible 'Little Hop' project.
Have sorted out some 'pico' size RC gear; 4ch RX, 4A ESC, tiny 4.9gm servo and miniature motor (from a collection that Colin-H sent me😉) and tested that all will work reliably on a single cell LiPo (3.7V nominal). All works well down to 3.1V 😊 Range may not be great but for Bathtub Races who needs range?😁
Will start the blog when I'm further down the line. Still at the template stage now.
Cheers, Doug 😎

Hi Red,
I had a friend print off the plans of the beaver tug from the EeZeBuilt web site at 60% and have been playing around with paper templates to see if i can fit some rc equipment in.
Struggling at the moment and starting to loose the plot!!!
Looking like i will have to come up with a different plan.

Maybe i will have do something crazy like my fish type projects.

Remember reading many years ago about a club that made their 'have a go' boats using a sort of paper mache . What they did was take a plaster of paris mould of the hull (no tumblehome ) - waxed it carefully then using pva/acrylic paint collected from the local dump laid layers of old newspaper /paint and so on - until they had made a hull about 3mm (1/8") thick . Think they eventually made deck and a simple superstructure too - should imagine those were a lot thinner however.
Have always wanted to try it - really inexpensive way of building a boat - and remember seeing lots of unwanted paint at our local dump in Christchurch.
PVA/Acrylic is waterproof when dry - would only need a bit of paint on the outside - and it would work for any type hull - round bilge, multi chined or even false clinker
Martin you could make some really nice little toy sailing boats that way & sell them to the seaside shops to supplement your budget blown on the Flora Pusher........
Have some simple plans if you need...........

You're right. What she did was quite strong but a couple of layers of nylon net would certainly strengthen it up. Her coracle was about 4'6" diameter.

Hi Nerys,
That has got me thinking.
For strength maybe some layers of nylon curtain in between the layers of paper!

Some years ago, I knew a girl who built a coracle using a chicken wire body on a wooden hoop frame (the gunwhale) and then a skin of many layers of papier mache. Varnished to waterproof when finished, it worked successfully.

Hi mark,
Thank you,
I have now spent some time looking at the videos and it is surprising what you can make using paper mache.

When i run out of plastic tubs, then i will have to experiment a bit to see what i can do.

It could end up being an interesting medium to work with and at very little cost just news paper and water resistant PVA glue.

I have made some things in the past with paper mache when my son was younger.

Being of a vintage to remember pre WW2 days, our local lifeboat station used to hold an open day every year. They weren't so high powered a marketing machine in those days and all they used to sell were papier mache lifeboats and lead lifeboat men. I still have a few lifeboat men but unfortunately no lifeboat. If I remember correctly, they used to disintegrate after a while.

The oldest boat in my collection was built during the first World War using papier mache, it is just over 3ft long with stiff card frames and bulkheads with a wooden deck and masts.
And was powered by a clockwork motor, with a a settable rudder.
Now in need of major restoration as the paper hull is delamination.
Cheers Colin.

We are down to level 2 this Thursday which means most shops will be open with spacing rules etc. We have been able to 'click and collect' on line shopping for a while (just did an 80km balsa (2 sheets) and glue run to the 'local' hobby shop and back today, (partly to charge the battery in one of my cars) -balsa supplies are almost out all round the country as everyone has been building stuff while stuck at home, so you have to get it when and where you can (I have orders in at 3 places at the moment, -big Spotlight craft store and 2 big hardware stores). Have had to buy thicker sizes to rip down for squares etc.

Most of the thinner sizes eg 1.5, 2.5, 3mm etc have gone and apparently there is a world wide shortage now as well, (probably the same reason) and the shops can't get any for at least 2 months, so get in now guys, just in case. We could be building models out of cardboard soon!(probably not a bad idea for planking if glassed after, - might actually try something)
Hope you guys get the chains off soon, as you'll all be champing at the bit by now (or have chewed right through it😁!

Just ordered some West system epoxy hardener to collect for the air boat from the marine shop, as I think there will be a rush on big boat stuff after this, as like everything else, big boat building/repairs have stopped as well, - worth thinking about. Unfortunately, flammable stuff is still a shipping problem (only till Thursday though,-yeehaa),😊 and traffic jams everywhere☹️aaheey.

Having started this thread I found I was unable to post replies, just got an error message. That seems to have changed. I wasn't being rude. I feel that even if I can go out I might not feel I want to risk it yet. As for crossing the border into Scotland, that would be about a ten hour drive for me and, much as I love Scotland, I'm not that keen!

I think Wales will fall into line in a week or two, at least I hope so. I'll have the crash tender and the stumpy barge to put in the water. Leave it much longer and I'll have the Dutch Schouw as well.

Same goes for that other Celtic land beyond the Severn Sea, we can go out, but must not drive anywhere away from home. I would read the law in England to mean that one could go to your usual lake, I think he even mentioned watersports.
