First Time Plank on Frame ?

Have a few plans for small sailboats from Vic Smeed and others . Sail well and can be RC'd . Building triplet Elvers for my descendants - but small and vane steered - not quite what you wanted.
If interested PM me and lets see what can be dug out. All in digital form so easily sent and printed tiled on an A4 size printer. Assemble with Pritt - or you can be extravagant and use your local print shop - from what I remember in UK they tend to be expensive.........

First Time Plank on Frame ?

Hi Rob,
That's a big question in my opinion.
I know it is not really planked but maybe a Springer tug.
If you are looking for a more taxing build Harold Underhill drew beautiful plans for a ring net fishing boat.
Just a couple of ideas.
Cheers,
Stephen.

"For my grandson I imagined a small sailboat perhaps ?
It needs to be simple but robust."
Hmmm! Just a thought ... I get one now and again😁
Might be simple for you to build Rob, but maybe not so simple for the grandson to control?
If a kit, how about something like this?

A good planking exercise for you, and you can leave off some of the more fragile details if you wish. But I suspect that you may find that difficult😉

My dear Fleet Admiral Martin,
"That means there will not be a lot of bits to knock off."
I do hope you are not encouraging our freshly baked Vice Admiral to commit a felony?😮
I'm not sure that the First Sea Lord would at all approve of him using stolen parts for his next build! He would be risking his commission and a dishonourable discharge.
Although ... it would take some pressure off the naval appropriations!😉

First Time Plank on Frame ?

Hi Rob look forward to seeing your plank on frame, Grandsons always need to be building something which is great, My grandson must go through more glue and wood than would take to build a full size ship, but its great to be teaching them some basic wood work skills.
If you recall I made the Freeman 22, which is a Norfolk Broads Cabin Cruiser for my grandson last year and he loves sailing it. It may be worth looking at some of the free plans that come with Model Boats Magazine, the Freeman was a free plan but I suppose any plan could be planked instead of using sheet material.
We wait with interest.

Good for you on trying a plank on frame build.
What are you thinking, a scratch build from plans or a kit?
If it is from a plan there are a lot out there for first time builders most of the plans give a degree of difficulty. If a kit some will give the degree of difficulty.
Most on line shops carry both plans and kits.
Good luck what ever you decide.

Hi Martin.
Yes I will be doing a build blog on the commission boat, which actually happens to be a cabin cruiser !!

Rob,

Just had another thought how about visiting the Eezebuilt website and downloading the plans for a nice simple boat.
Then you could plank it instead of putting sheets on it.

Martin555.
If it looks right it probably is.

Hi Rob,

Will you be doing a build log on your commission ?

Maybe you could do something like a Cabin Cruiser.
That means there will not be a lot of bits to knock off.

As a lady, I cannot help but fire the final cannon and assure your promotion to Vice Admiral. Very well done Rob.

All the best. Nerys

First Time Plank on Frame ?

Now I'm nearing the end of my Pilot Boat build I've been considering what to try next 🤔
There is a commission build to start sometime soon but I'd like to try something fresh that I can build in parallel with this new boat.

I have watched with great admiration the excellent build of Graham93's boat for 'Bionic Bill' and more recently the amazing work that's being done by Stevedownunder, the common denominator being the 'plank-on-frame' method of construction.

This is something that I've never tried before as I have until now been a kit builder.

So I'm asking for recommendations for a reasonably simple introduction to POF building.
It could be a simple sailing boat or a small-ish service craft with an interesting hull shape.

The intention is to build it for my grandson who is of an age now to appreciate 'Papa's boats' and is showing an interest in having his own so it needs to simple but robust.
Thanks in anticipation.
Robbob.
