Loss of historic boat yard.

I feel sorry for all the businesses, manufacturing or otherwise that will never recover from the long Lockdown. I've noticed it in my immediate area.

Latest news suggests that the fire was an accident caused by a stray ember from a rubbish fire blown onto the ancient wooden buildings. The high winds did the rest.
Tragic shame,such a great loss.

Has anyone said what caused the fire? Whatever it was it was pretty disastrous. As Colin says, there used to be fireboats on the tidal Thames, but had these still existed, the time factor to get one as far up river as this would have been far too much. Let's be thankfull that only one boat was destroyed, it could have been much worse.

Hi Martin.
Must have been terrible to watch as part of your life was destroyed in front of you ☹️☹️.
Don’t get me on my soap box about what this country used to build and invent in comparison to things today.

I know what you mean Rick.
I worked for Vosperthornycroft in Woolston Southampton (Ship yard) for just over 25 years and i watched as it was ripped apart.
Now the area is flat's and houses.

If it looks right it probably is.

Terrible news. How do you replace older boats even if there is insurance. Buildings can be rebuilt.

Apparently all the firefighting equipment had to be carried over a narrow wooden bridge as it was the only access apart from arriving by boat. Shame no firefighting boats available.
Cheers Colin.

This is indeed a terrible event and looking at local news clips and the extra pictures I have just posted an absolute disaster.
There are many references on line.
It seems that LFB did attend according to some articles.

Hi Colin.
That's a real tragedy ☹️
Such a shame that it couldn't be saved.
Will the boatyard's insurance pay up to re-build ??

Sad day for those people who love historic boats and builders.
Fire brigade couldn't get to fire on island to save it.
