About this boat

Santa Fe Railroad Tug

AT&SF - Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway

I have now built a railroad barge to push around with a few "G" scale rail cars on deck. Hull is solid Styrofoam block 4" thick about 18" wide and nearly 5' long. Hull is painted with a rubberized coating called FlexSeal. Deck is plywood.

    Algon —

I really love what you did with your tug and the scratch-built train barge — they look incredibly realistic. Did you follow any blueprints for your barge, or was it entirely your own design?

I’m asking because I’m looking for 1:24 barge blueprints to build one for my Juanita. I know New Port Crown Model from China has a very nice barge, but the tariffs make it too expensive to import. So I’d like to scratch-build one using a good set of plans.

Any recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks — Julian 😎

Its interesting how modelers from different interests also have a fascination with the boating world. In my earlier days, I too had interest in model railroading, and wanted to build a layout with a working car float. But alas, time, money and space were the limiting factors, that gave way to raising a family.

I remember seeing a picture of a rail car ferry in a book about the Southern Pacific Railroad. This ferry ushered cars across the Mississippi river in New Orleans before there were any bridges across the river.

This may be something I might consider in the near future, say in HO scale, as a project to undertake.
