About this boat

A 1/5 semi scale model of my 15ft day sailer,- designed by US naval architect Edson I Schock in 1953. The original was built in NZ in the late 80s and I bought and restored it in 2008. Thought it would be nice to have an RC model of it, so measured the boat and made the model 1/5 scale.

Model is made from polystyrene foam, shaped and f/glassed with a ply deck and ply lined cockpit and ply transom. Uses a HiTec winch with a floor mounted sheet hauler pulley system.
The skipper is servo powered and ducks under the boom when tacking

Hi Ron, if you look at my build section on the skipper you might get an idea of how he works.
Look for this in the build blog search. Basically, I cut the figures' torso down to enable him to move to horizontal (by gravity) then he's hauled back upright by a servo at the front end of the seat pulling on a cord (with a spring strain relief) round a pulley under his butt and attached to a servo horn implanted in the same area (you can see it in one of the pics) Vid of him working and detail pics here-

Hi Lucky D, does look very similar to a Heron or an Arrow dinghy (we had limited numbers of both here in the60s) but a bit bigger. Built using the developable surface method (drawn to alleviate having to steam the ply) Sails very well and is well balanced. Has the equivalent of a 470 rig so can be fun to sail it by yourself in a decent wind ! but has a roller reefed jib which is very handy at times.

Unfortunately the model skipper only ducks the boom (that was a mission in itself). Would have been nice to have him change sides, but not really feasible due to the lack of room and the mechanism needed. I had the Idea for my cat skipper to change sides, but that was also too complicated.

You are a master of scale dinghies JB, beautiful - does the helmsman also change sides on tacking????!!!!

Your day sailor, except for its length is a copy of the Heron dinghy in the UK, designed by Jack Holt in about the 1950's. I still have my orignal gaff-rigged Heron built in about 1958, but sadly just stored in my garage.
