Fairacre plan built (MM709, early 70s) Rescued from rubbish bin on farm, rebuilt hull and f/glassed. restored, varnished and re 'glazed' cabin and added grab rails, mast , lights, curtains (leftovers from a Graupner Commodore I built in the 70s) cleats and boarding platform. Restored the deck and varnished. Fitted new prop shaft and rudder and made name decals. cleaned and painted hull interior. (Motor: Graupner 400 monoperm) (ESC: China) (5/10) Plan appears to be modeled on an early UK Bates Starcraft cruiser.

Hi Bob,
from memory I used either meths or isopropyl alcohol, then detergent then hosed it out and let it dry for a few weeks. I know i had to be a bit 'severe' with it, but the hull needed a major rebuild, and f/glassing, so I wasn't too worried. If you use Zinsser stain blocker undercoat, it will cover what remains no problem. You can then overcoat it with an enamel. JB ▲

Hi JB,
It looks like your Fairacre was previously powered by an IC engine and so you had an oil soaked hull to clean up. The interior certainly looks nice and clean now, so I was wondering what method you used to clean the oil soaked wood? I have a restoration model with really oily hull and I need to find the best way of cleaning the wood so that I can make some repairs that will need the PVA glue to be able to penetrate the wood fibres. Re dimensions the length is 770mm width average 180mm (tapers from bow) weight is 1.75kg (with 2s 2200mah LiPo) prop is a 70s Graupner 2 blade 40mm diam (pitch unknown but moderate) JB

Hi FB, thanks for the comment curtains are actually left over material from a Graupner Commodore kit I built in the late 70s (as mentioned). Knew it would come in handy one day. I found out that the actual 100% boat (Fairacre) the model plans were drawn from, was a Bates 'Starcraft' (not a 'broads cruiser' as I was originally told it was). A number were used as hire launches,- now a fair few restored and collectable. There is also a Starcraft owners site on the web.

Congratulations on a great restoration JB. She looks beautiful, and a boat for which you can feel rightly proud. And I do like the curtains; they seem so fitting and of the period. Sometimes it is the small details that really set off a boat. 😉😉
