Todays Sailings - Again A cold Wet Start To The Day - 16 September 2026 - Part 2
The weather was good, and those of us that were at the lake enjoyed some good running with our Classic Model Power Boats - and yachts.
Ians DF65 did not have enough wind to drive it along too often - even with his additional extra large sail set - but the odd gust of wind did see it running nicely.
The unofficial Sea Commander Brigade (both current and future) were present to “fly the flag” , and Rapier 1 also attracted some good interest from a new member who would like to find a Rapier for his own use.
If everyone that has seen the Rapier running and wanted to have one for themselves all found one - they would easily out-number our Sea Commanders by a considerable margin - but to date, only Rapier 1 can be seen representing this excellent 1960’s design from Les Rowell on the club lake.
The Great British Car Show was also taking part in Victoria Park, so a visit “around the corner” to see what was going on there was a bonus on such a nice day.
The Southport Model Engineer Club were also running their locomotives all day (they seldom miss).
The local Southport Model Car Club has an excellent race circuit just the other side of the model engineers station platform, and they also had a 1/10 off-road buggy race meeting on as well, so we had a lot of interesting things going on here on Sunday………even though we missed the Blackpool show…..
…….and to top it all off - we had the British Grand Masters Grass Track Grand Prix just down the road.
Sadly, I can’t be in more than one place at a time, but I was pleased to hear that Chris “Bomber” Harris won the event .

The Southport Club lake is not that big compared to some, but it is a really nice clean lake that was built specifically for r/c model boats not that long ago.
As a fresh water lake close to the sea front and next to Victoria Park it has a lot to offer.
The local club members are all very friendly and helpful and the club is very well supported.
As a public lake it is open at all times to any member of the public, but as a club member you gain access to the clubs private car part right next to the lake, and that is very handy.
The clubs private car also has a small clubhouse for members to use and Paul cooks up some nice hot food on a Sunday morning for anyone that fancies a breakfast.
The other time that members meet on a regular basis is on a Wednesday morning, but with the lake always being open it is used during most daylight hours 7 days of the week…..and some dark nights when the club arranges one of its night sailing events.
Helpful club members like Malcolm keep some dye in the water to stop the algae growth and he can often be seen walking around the lake and hooking out anything else that may have fallen in to keep the water clear.
This time of year following a very hot summer some of the leaves will fall into the water from the trees than run alongside the model railway lines, but these are soon removed.
We share one half of the car park with the local Model Engineers Club , who also run some of their track along one side of the lake and have their clubhouse, workshop, loco shed and marshalling yards on their side of the car park, so it is a really nice place to be.
Joe, and his helpers keep the lawnmowers and other gardening tools in a shed in the car park and use them to keep the grass cut and the grounds nice and tidy.
Both clubs share a very handy "on-site" toilet and washroom facility, so both clubs are well catered for.
The clubs are accessed via Rotten Row - the most inappropriate name possible for such a beautifully well kept road that since Victorian times has maintained some beautiful trees, shrubs and flower collections run along its entire length, and seem to thrive in the local weather conditions.
These trees, shrubs and flowers are well maintained by the local Supporters of Rotten Row volunteers who can often be seen digging, pruning and generally maintaining the plant collections 12 months of the year.
For those that enjoy r/c model car racing, the local model car club is also in Victoria Park and race’s 1/10 scale off-road buggies on their superb permanent circuit and hosts national and local club meetings most weekends.
The Southport Model Boat Club is defiantly worth a visit !
Bob.
