Hello all! Before my two week sojourn out to California starting tomorrow...

Here she is, all 31 inches and 4.8 pounds of 3D printed 1/10th scale madness. And the questions are starting arise after more than a few hours spent in research. How to get her to plane even close to scale?
    1) EDF? Probably not, actually I don't think even a 90mm fan, (which will, in fact, push a faomy jet) will ever get this boat to plane.
    2) Prop? Maybe with dual 6s and a killer motor, monster cooling etc. But, nowhere near scale with a big prop hanging out the back.
    3) Turbine? probably yes, but way out of my league in mechanicals and $$. There will be tons of head-scratching my quickly balding head on this experiment.

This is going to go on the shelf for the long haul as my freighter needs finishing and the big Sterling Chris Craft Corvette is screaming at me. But, off to Cali for now...I will drop some pix from time to time of our travels.

    Best to all!

Thanks JB. These notes are a huge help! I will do my best to get the inlets to the fan as short as possible. I suspect that any sort of speed runs will be held to a minimum due to battery usage, not to mention the excessive heat. I recently saw a demonstration video of a guy bench testing a hi-speed LiPo brushless set up until it burned up. It didnโ€™t take too long. Yikes!!!

We simply called them โ€œair howlersโ€ when they were still actively flying around our young heads. . ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

    Hi Jump,

what John said re ducts. I have 2 HK Vampires which I have modified to give max airflow. One has spring loaded flaps on top behind the cockpit, the other has open vents. I have also taken the side inlets out as far as I can. There is also a large inlet under the fuselage. These are only 70mm 10 blade fans running on 4s LiPos, but even with all the mods possible, there is still a large vacuum happening when running. They get around 1.5kg of thrust,- a 90 would be much better.

Ideally, the shorter the distances it has to suck and blow the better, as even the tubes cause friction and reduce thrust. A 90mm 10 blade fan on 5s/6s high C LiPo should move it well, depending on the fan motor specs. Only problem with ducted fans, is they really suck - volts๐Ÿ˜Š

Yessir Ed, thanks for forwarding this to me!
I have the 1:24 Speedline kit and was going to set-up for scale display, but then stumbled onto the large printed one and put it in mothballs...for now.
I will eventually experiment with a fan, but I am unsure that it will work. Much more research to do.

Here is article on converting the speed line static model to RC. I have got one but must still get round to building it. It is a much smaller vac formed model. I did tests in a fan unit but discovered that the thrust would be too low.

Looks like a lot of work has gone into that - not my cup of tea however - I am more into traditional ships and historic vessels although I guess Bluebird is historic

    John!
What a beautiful build and incredibly helpful information on the inlets and fan area!
I truth be told I wish someone had come up with a traditional lightweight build kit of the K7, so I do appreciate your efforts to build from the ground up. This 3D print is light years away from what I normally do, but the printing was too much for me not to try after my Touchwood was destroyed.
I will hold onto the EDF fan plan for now in order to make proper intake tunnels. But first I wiLL endeavor to calculate the surface areas soon and report back.

hi ya there my friend, when I first built Bluebird, I worked to the formulae of the surface area of Bluebirds air intakes must equal the surface area of the fan face. Don't forget, or as you may already know, any obstructions in the front of the fan will decrease the efficiency drastically. So, that was why I suggested removing Donald and the plastic canopy. The model I built, I used a wire mesh to represent the canopy and it is hard to tell the difference when she is on the lake. Also, you are right about making a funnel to channel the air from the air ducts to the fan. A lot of failures of Bluebird and ducted fans is because many people miss this out. What actually happens, is, you cannot supply sufficient air through the ducts and it creates a vacuum between the ducts and the fan.

Here are a couple of pics of the build of mine showing the air funnel from the ducts to the fan.

Thank you John! This is a major help!
Oddly enough I almost bought a trashed Traxas Spartan just so could steal the brushless and all the related mechanicals. But stopped short, because I still feel that a 90mm 8-12 blade EDF could work if i fabricated the proper air tunnels on either side of Good Donald.
The research will continue! But, first I will take this trial fit and throw it in my bossโ€™s pool to make sure this K7 floats. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    Thanks again for this link!

Hi, I like that mind, it is as smart as a dart that one is.

Here is food for thought - if you lose Donald & the perspex canopy to increase air flow into the ducted fan; an 80 mm 12 bladed fan running on 22 volts should give you in the region of about 6 - 6.5 lb thrust which should just get her on the plane.

It all really depends on the size and weight of your batteries.

If you want to go down the route of the old brushless motor and propeller there is a good topic which ran on model boat mayhem, where a few people actually converted Bluebird to being prop driven & had pretty good results. If you aren't already a member of the Mayhem forum you could join just to see photographs & etc.

    All good stuff my friend.

Just for the heck of it I would like to mention that I had the great Touchwood K-7 in 1:12th scale years back and lost it in the house fire. At the time and after some research I settled on Tamiya French Blue TS-10 as my color of choice.
But upon further review last week I made a paint chip of three colors that may also fit the bill based on archival photos and some sketchy history on the actual origins of Campbellโ€™s โ€œBluebird Blue.โ€
Then more digging came up the possibility that Sir Donald chose Fordโ€™s auto color โ€œFjord Blueโ€ that is way different than any of my choices.
So any suggestions will be helpful when the time comes.
This will be a long journey in so many ways.

Ps: Mary is driving right now, we are almost to St Louis. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    Jump,
Nice project! If you are worried about not being able to power
it scale like, you could sloop rig it with hydrofoils! ๐Ÿ™„
I'm sure it would be an attention getter.

Beautiful as usual Jump. Looks to me like that is a shelf/display job when in her fabulous blue. Don't get sidetracked in Cali to impulse buy the next toy!! - Have a good break.
