Well done with the planking. Applying deck planking with individual planks, especially then with separate infill strips to replicate caulking is something I always admire. I have seen a number of failures, but most of us seem to have quite high standards and will re-make work that is not up to scratch. I certainly find that, and in cases have re-made work three times in order to get it right.π

Hi Martin
Thank you for your comments, I just do not like to see any of my friends treated in a bad way. I know that we have not had any form of post from Fireboat to say why he removed you and Bill from your posts, so to me that is a case of throwing his toy's out of his pram. Keep safe the both of you Fred ▲

Fred,
Please don't let this ruin your enjoyment of this site. I am sure that the other members want to see your build log. It will be a shame to ruin the enjoyment just because of one person. Martin555. ▲

That's a better rudder Colin - bottom example is more suitable - could easily be shaped like the kit one - both balanced rudders which place less strain on the servo - not sure they would help with reversing unless they are bigger than the kit one. Fully agree with not using the plastic shaft type - sooner or later its going to shear and sods law says it will be at the worst possible time...........

Hi Fred, having turning in reverse problems in the past I have tried various methods and found that if you have a section of rudder ahead of the pivot shaft it improves handling immensely.
Also the rudders supplied with the black plastic tube are a pain so I discard them in favour of brass tube as supplied with Robbe rudders. Cheers Colin. ▲

Hi Redpmg
Thank you for your comments, you are not the first to comment on the size of the rudder of the Guardsman, so today I will have a look at trying to making mine a bit larger but to look the same as the drawing. I used you method when I made the rudder for my Lady "T". Fred ▲

Good modelling so far Fred - however you probably will need an extension on the rudder for reversing if you want the Guardsman to turn properly - my Lindberg Tug for instance with a scale rudder will only reverse to the right without one - with a slip on extension it goes both ways easily . Presume it has something to do with the rotation of the prop. I leave it off most times as the tug turns on a sixpence - as its only13" long. With the size of your boat however think you should enquire as to how much larger the rudder was made before you finally fit one - much easier to fix at this stage . I used a shaft of brass with lamination's of wood either side with two pins through the shaft inside to prevent turning on the shaft - then coated it with thinned resin twice before painting - so it would be a pain to remake now especially as it is held in place by another brass pin soldered in at the bottom.

Hi Fred,
Yes i see what you are saying. You would end up with a lip under the hull where the 'O' ring seal is. Martin555. ▲

Hi Martin
Thank you for your tip, I do have a block of wood shaped to the hull for the post to sit in, its just that I do not like the fact that the black rudder post has to be so far out of the hull to get it to sit right due to the shape of the hull, if I use some brass tube in its place it will look like it is part of the rudder, hope that came out how I have it in my mind? When I have done the new post I will post some photos of both post. Fred ▲

Hi Fred,
Have you thought about gluing a piece of thick wood say about 10mm thick were the rudder is. Shape the underside of the wood to the shape of the inner hull then make sure the top edge is nice a level. That will help the rudder stay at the correct angle. Martin555. ▲

Hi Rob
Thank you, I would say it took about two hours in total, I took most of it off with a jewellery saw then finished off with files. Fred ▲

Hi Fred
You have done a great job of that rudder reshaping it. I bet it took sometime to get it right. Robert π ▲

hi Fred
Have you given much thought of how you are going to construct the hull? I know the original was bread and butter balsa. Then, I believe, they came up with the vac-formed hull. When I built mine I used the templates for the shape of the hull that is given in the plan to construct frames. I planked the hull. Lovely little model they are to sail. I have sailed mine in many a steering competition. The only thing I had to do was make the rudder larger - as - it didnt respond to helm in reverse and it just decided which way it was going to go by itself.π John ▲

Hi Nerys
Thank you for your comment, As for tall funnels I just felt that the early type of work boats are a bit more appealing, but saying that I do have a more modern tug, along side three Oil Rig supply Vessels that are in stock to be built at some time. Fred ▲

I did like your 'Wacht am Rhein' and I expect you will make an equally good job of 'Guardsman', I think you must have a penchant for tall funnels.
