I have a photo record of my build so far, and have picked up the build from earlier on in the year. Just need a couple of quiet hours to write the blog up, making the barrels has given me the inspiration to get on with things. Watch this space. And thanks for the interest.
Barrels for my next project, I may need a bigger boat!

Wicked nice! Nothing more relaxing than and hour or two on the lathe. No hunting for dropped parts, everything held in place tightly, no huntin' and peckin' for tools or parts. Ahhhhhhh.

The price of wood and dowel is hi.Wonderful work on the barrels. You having the lath and ability to do them works out so well. Time is your only cost end result your pay.

yes it would be nice to varnish and band the barrels but unfortunately i am going to paint these yellow as they are the plastic "stop a great white from diving type"

There's nothing more satisfying than turning a piece of close grained wood, The barrels look really good, do they have any hoops on them? a couple of brass hoops would look good and just add that finishing touch

I acquired a broken shovel shaft and put it aside for a rainy day, it was just the chunk of good tight grained wood I had been wanting. I had previously used my wife's sweeping brush shaft for the torpedoes on the brave borderer,( still in her bad books over that). The brush shaft was not the correct diameter for the barrels, so I had been scrounging for a while, I could have bought some 1-1/4 inch, dowel but have you seen the price? And I would have had loads left I only wanted approx 13-14 inches. So after drilling out the rivet holding the handle on I trimmed the ends and it just fit between the centres of my small Myford lathe.
After a couple of hours I must say I'm pleased with the result, just got to add detail then seal and paint them.
