Gary, you're modified pulley looks good, can you tell me what the sizes are on the required pulley.
I managed to get some replacement pulleys last year from a local supplier in Hereford near to me. Would need i/d, o/d, pulley sizes and offset. And depths of Vee.
I'll check that they are still going tomorrow and post their details.
Cheers Colin.

Hi Bob, and thanks for that and will give them a try. It would seem that every one I have tried so far is having delivery problems. Hopefully, if I keep trying I will get there in the end, with a bit of luck. Regards, Gary.

hi Bob, I have just been on to Myford, and they don't have one in stock at the moment, they do have an outstanding order with their supplier, and the pulley is on that list so I will go ahead and cut down the original pulley, and make that do until I get a replacement. Regards, Gary.

The Newton Tesla control system just uses the same Myford motor pulley as the standard motor that would have come with the lathe.

If the Myford branded pulley does prove to be too expensive, I seem to remember that Newton Tesla were also able to supply a suitable drive pulley, and as you only need the one groove you should be able to find an inexpensive alternative to do the job.

The Newton Tesla drive system comes as a "plug and play" unit with the motor and control unit pre-wired.
You have just experienced the joy of fitting the motor by yourself, and this was the only awkward part of the fit.
The control unit was fitted to the front of the Myford coffin cabinet and held on with four M5 dome headed stainless screws, nuts and washers, and the the motor and control unit just plug into each other.

Hi Gary,
That's a hard lesson to learn, you are not the only one to have stuffed up a pulley, sometimes these "easy" jobs take on a whole life of their own.

Stephen.

Thanks for that info. Bob, much appreciated I will get on to them tomorrow, it is the Mitsubishi motor pulley, I pushed it on and lined up the woodruff key, and tapped it with a hammer, and then realised it was on backwards. I tried to remove the pulley which wouldn't budge, so used a small three-legged puller. which damaged the edge of the larger double pulley. I can cut the edge off the larger pulley to make it look reasonable as it's the smaller pulley I need. Actually, you have answered a question for me which was did you fit the Newton Teslar Drive System? I now know the answer is yes, it was yourself. It is looking really good by the way, prepare yourself for the big reveal which is coming soon. Regards, Gary.

I remember fitting that same motor by myself when I first bought the Newton Tesla drive system for the lathe - its awkward doing it on your own.

The pulley on the Mitsubishi motor (Part Q37 A2273/1) has a woodruff key slotted into the motor shaft to stop it spinning so that should come off with a straight pull.

Was it the triple headstock pulley on the lathe (Part number H2 A1993/1) that you had problems with?

It may be worth asking the new Myford company (now in Hebden Bridge) how much they want for a new pulley - it should not cost that much!

A good day on the installation front as I managed on my own to refit the motor, mind it took a little while but I got there in the end, it was my sheer determination that triumphed. Then full of the joys of spring, I fitted the drive pulley which was a tight fit so I tapped it on with a hammer, and then realised when the belt didn't fit that it was on backwards. As I couldn't get the pulley off I used a puller and managed to damage the pulley. So then on to eBay and I found one, but couldn't afford it the asking price was £931.50p, bloody unbelievable you can buy a complete lathe for that sort of money. I will cut the damaged pulley down as it's a double pulley and I don't need the larger damaged portion, on my Chinese lathe. Regards, Gary.

Hi Steve, thought you guys were still locked down, haven't seen the news for a while and sick of chinflu jab hassling on radio an TV, it's like Chinese water torture and brain washing all at once !
10,000 positive traces and 40 deaths since it started (mostly people in rest homes about to drop off anyhow) Not too worried about it, but they are still talking about wiping it out, which is impossible. We are getting vaccine passports for travel, bars, events etc, but not for shops. Shopping is limited and food places sell at the door still.

At least there is still on-line shopping for model stuff if necessary. I,m tendingto buy things locally now, sick of waiting months for China stuff . Just received a part for a future project - 72 days and 70 postal processes from China to here,- ridiculous ! Bought my chuck and drive pulley locally which took a few days, the tailstock chuck from China took 2 weeks, which was unusually good, (must have used a decent carrier. Belts from EBay have been about 3 weeks so far,- still in China !

Hi Garry,
I am pleased that your Super 7 has been re-united with its original Myford "coffin" stand.(so named due to its shape)
With regards to the lifting, I used to always reckon that lifting a Super 7 in comfort was best done as a two person operation - but lifting a Super 7 with a Norton gearbox attached was better done as a thee person operation!
That Norton gear box adds quite a bit of weight...or maybe its just the "final straw" that makes the difference ?
Looking forward to seeing some more pictures when the bed and gearbox have been painted 👍

Hi JB,

We aren't locked down anymore people who are jabbed have most of their "freedoms" returned. My wife and I are not jabbed, and due to the premiers "mandate" which is why we couldn't get into a hardware store and why I cannot go to work (working remotely) and face a big fine if I set foot inside the building, all very stressful.
Personally I am more concerned about the vaccine than covid and believe me I don't want to get covid.
So much for our constitution and basic human rights!!!

Over here they don't say if the people who have passed have been jabbed any more, I recall a few weeks ago something like 7 people passed over night for example and only one was not jabbed that was on the normal news.

Having a well equipped workshop adds so much flexibility to what you can create.

Cheers,
Stephen.

Hi Steve, don't know why you guys are still locked down, a bit ridiculous as it has been proven round the world it's a waste of time,- just kills business and stresses everyone. There comes a time where you have to just get out there and deal with it. We are pretty much back to normal bar wearing masks in shops, scanning in etc, but we have had an increase in traces (wish they would stop calling them 'cases') as most people with traces do not end up in hospital, or even get sick. We are supposed to have a 'traffic light' system coming soon (another govt joke) but I don't think people are going to take a lot of notice,- hence we are being threatened with fines now (more control attempts from a desperate govt).

We've had the usual few oldies die from it, but on the whole is seems to be not too bad so far. Thousands down the beach here last weekend,- you'd never know there was a pandemic on ! Summer's coming, so that might slow the chinflu down some more. Had a jab a few weeks back, but it's been giving me bicep pains and cramps (felt like a lump moving down from my shoulder) too late now, it's in there and no getting it out.

I'm happy to have the lathe now, as it will allow for a bit more freedom from on line shopping. Have to make some covers for the drives yet, but it's going to be very useful. Already have future jobs in mind for it. You don't have to think where you are going to get a small spacer for eg any more, just knock one up in 5 mins.

Hi Bob, yes, I have also seen that rather expensive little tin of touch-up paint which I thought was unbelievable. Today was a big day on the progress front, as the lathe which was on the garage floor, has now been repatriated with the coffin stand which is in my workshop, care of my brother Chris. Now it is all in one lump let the painting commence in earnest, the biggest surprise of the day and I certainly had my doubts, was the fact I managed to lift the headstock end onto its retaining studs on the coffin stand. this was executed in a plan of three lifts, from floor to trolley, trolley to workmate, and workmate to coffin stand, and a huge sigh of relief was uttered by all, what a heavy little bugger it is. Mind a job well done and some thing which I don't need to worry about any more. Regards , Gary.

Hi Stephen, yes, very strange times indeed and the present situation does not seem to be improving, despite the Draconian measures taken by your government.

I am afraid that I strongly disagree with your government on "non-essential retail" as the building of your boat is essential, with regard to your peace of mind and the fact it has been twenty years in the making.

Myself and your followers on this website will all be very disappointed if you are not allowed to continue with this essential build.
Thank God for internet shopping. Regards, Gary.

As a matter of interest, not long before the Myford factory in Beeston (Nottingham) closed, the top man came to visit me at my home and took a look at my Super 7 and was able to check the factory records to see when my lathe was made and what was included in the original delivery.
He mentioned that the lathe and the Norton gearbox (both serial numbers were checked) had been supplied and delivered together from new with the Myford 'coffin stand".
Apparently it is unusual to find lathes of this age that have never been separated from its originally supplied equipment.
I recorded the manufacturing date of the lathe on the front cover of the (original) handbook that I passed-on to Gary.

Hi Gary,

At least you got what you were after, there will be no regifting this Christmas!

You are quite right about the human rights, apart from not being able to set foot inside the factory that I worked at (now working remotely) I cannot go to the hardware shop now or anywhere that is "non essential retail", as outlined by the government.

As the late great John Lennon said "strange times indeed".

Hi Stephen, yes my Christmas present from me, to me. Well I mean one has to treat one's self occasionally, does one not? It is something I have wanted for a very long time, and I had just about given this up as it's never going to happen. Then Bob mentioned he had one for sale and he is a bit of a Myford fanatic, which is what I plan to become in the near future. Some very strange things happening in Australia according to the news here, whatever happened to Human Rights? Take good care of yourself, Gary.

Hi Bob, and I hope you approve of my handy work with a paint-brush, yes that paint is a bit special and I was quite surprised at how easy it was to use and get a nice even finish. I have fitted the quick action tool post, and had to remove that interlocking pawl ratchet thing the old tool post sits on. It was difficult to get the three screws out but managed with an impact-wrench. (just a light tap I didn't bray it, I reckon it was some sort of thread sealant.) I shall be forever in your debt if not actually longer.) Regards, and stay in touch. Gary.

I have wanted and looked for this particular lathe for a very long time, and I suppose to a degree had given up on ever finding one that was in excellent condition and affordable. Then Bob (Zooma,) came along and mentioned he had one for sale, which just happens to be in incredible condition, and on seeing photos of it I was hooked, and even more so with all the tooling which came with it. So I now have a forever lathe and can't wait to get it back into one piece and up and running. I am now in the process of changing the colour to Myford Green and enclosed are a few photos in the environment-friendly green. (I still have a lot of painting to do, hence only a few bits painted.) Regards, Gary.
