Ron your build log is appreciated. We have similar interests...workboats, almost cartoon-like. You have made remarkable progress over the last 3 weeks. Have you found a suitable geared power plant? I seem to recall your pinion had bit the dust. If you havent, I have something to offer in the 250-380 range. Not sure exactly what size you would call it, but its quite a bit smaller than a 540. Ready to launch later this Spring. I found Happy Family figures on Facebook marketplace for $6 per figure buying 7 of them.

Gave her the name, Mrs.B, in respect of the three ladies in our family.

Tank testing showed a small leak but after applying 5min epoxy mixture along any suspicious seams, no more leaks 😁

I went back and checked the drawings from John Gardner’s book. It shows the height from cockpit floor to roof over wheelhouse is 5’-7”

My figure here is 6” which is 1”=1’ six foot person. I figure since everyone has the same toros length on average, if I shorten the legs the figure could be brought down to about 5’ 8” or 5’6” without an issue.

These are Fisher Price Happy Family doll house figures which can be found on used stuff websites such as Facebook marketplace. Average price in Canada is $8-$10 per figure.

I'm a PBY fan as well. Please ensure your grandson sees the Wikipedia article, search on "catalina". Its good to see a youngster so interested in tech. Back in the '50s my Dad had a business partner who gifted me a styrene PBY kit. No idea why, tho, as Doug was too young to hav served in WW2. Until a couple of days ago I had no idea how ubiquitous the PBYs/Cansos were in their decades. Cheers, Rod

Hull is sheeted and fibreglass cloth applied. Working on servo placement and rudder control arms. I prefer dual push rods.

Turned the mast on the lathe. Bowsprit is coming along too.

I suspect you have similar sources in Canada. My stash of similar gears came from dismantled old mainframe computers and Ticket dispenser machines including many 24 volt motors that work well on 12v and draw little current.
Hope you can find a replacement gear.

Ron, when I was flying parkflyers in the early 2000s i was utilizing small geared motors definitely smaller than 540 size. They typically mounted on a 1/2 x 1/4" stick fuselage via a rectangular socket-like fitting that held the motor & its reduction gearing (so as to swing a larger prop). "GWS" brand comes to mind. I've spent abt 45min trying to find a Canadian source but unsuccessful, everyone seems to be selling brushless. Sorry that i cant offer you anything, my aircraft stuff was all purged in 2016 with a move.

I have ordered 1/16” x 4” x 30” Basswood sheets from Great Hobbies nearest store to me. While I am waiting for it to arrive the entire model has been brushed with Varathane. Fibreglass has been applied to the fin box inside and out, along with key locations to add strength.

Unfortunately some of the birch ply had strips which tore-away after cutting but after sealing and fibreglass these areas will be just fine.

One side is sheeted, today I will begin the other side.

On another note, I have found that the Dory design is very similar from one to the next. Some where short 12 footer and others like this St.Pierre up to 28 ft. The one I have drawn up is from The Dory Book by John Gardner.

Rod, the motor is a either 340 or 250 it came out of the 18” Carol Moran model. It is geared down as these Dorys only had small 2 cyl engines. Not meant for water-skiing 😉

What size brushed motor do you intend to fit? Just asking as I am relatively inexperienced.
