Adding A Fuse To The Electrics

From experience, my Brave Borderer blog recounts how this was gained:
The tubular glass fuses blow immediately their capacity is reached.
That is fine for brushed motors, but brushless can have high transient currents that cause instantaneous failure.
Have found the automotive blade type handle these currents and still offer protection. They have "slow blow" characteristics.
With brushless, I always power each motor independently to avoid a single fuse taking all the load.

Adding A Fuse To The Electrics

Compared with glass-tube fuses, blade fuses hav a simpler structure & are lighter, more durable, & more compact. They are handily colour-coded to correspond with their Amperage.

Blade fuses come in 6 sizes, the trademarked sizes smallest to largest are Micro2, Micro3, Low Profile MINI, MINI, ATO/ATC(also called "regular") & MAXI or MAX. I dont fuse all circuits or even all models but i chose to use the same type of blade fuse that my Hyundai employs so that i need keep only 1 kit.

Occasionally a fuse will go defective so if a fuse blows I will replace it a maximum of 2 times then if it continues to blow I take it to my mechanic to determine what is causing the fuse to repeatedly blow.

It is not necessary to disconnect the battery before you change a fuse.

Hello Dave,

Interest, thank you. I will have a look online for a box of fuse.

Greg
The 20amp rating is the max the fuse holder is designed to carry. Your fuse will need to meet the requirements of your wiring and equipment. You can buy selection boxes of car type fuses so you always have spares to hand and for trying different values. If your chosen fuse keeps blowing you need to increase to the next highest value after checking for any faults and binding of the drive components.

Adding A Fuse To The Electrics

Hello Dave,

Thank you for the valuable information. I placed an order yesterday for some building accessories and noticed that they sold a fuse holder and 20amp fuse so I put two on the order. The holder appears to take the same fuses as used in cars. At 20amps I suppose I will need to step that down to a lower rating.

Your speed regulator or ESC Electronic Speed controler indicates on the packaging or the device itself the Max Amp above that you can throw it away
You Check the Max Amp of the motor that you built in is that for example 10 Amp and your ESC is for Instanzen 20 Amp i would built und à fuse of 15 Amp so you are always Safe that you don’t burn yourESC
Hope this clarifies things

To avoid that your escs start fuming i always use fuses which are underneath the indicated AMP of the esc
ESC: Max 15 amp i use fuses of 10 AMP
Hope this clearifies

Adding A Fuse To The Electrics

Hi Greg
I agree with Colin.
I would add that the main purpose of a fuse is to protect the wiring which can melt and catch fire if its capacity is exceeded. I suspect you may know this from your working experience.
Most scale models do not use high currents so fuses are available from car accessory suppliers.
Should you ever move to fast racing models then you need more specialised setups and fuses/emergency shut offs.
At your stage in the hobby this will not be a feature of your modelling so don't worry.
Do however make sure all bare wires are insulated and all connections fully tightened.

Adding A Fuse To The Electrics

Hi, fuses in the electrical systems.
I find that if you can fit a fuse that is the same or slightly lower than the demand is the way to go.
Checking the stall current of the motor is a good place to start and fit a fuse with slightly lower rating in the feed line.
Cheers Colin.
Fair winds and calm waters,
COLIN.

Adding A Fuse To The Electrics

Over the past few weeks I have had tremendous help and advice from many members of which I am very grateful as I start RC boats as a new hobby. On occasions it have been mentioned to me that I should add a fuse to the electrical systems of the boats that I have and will be building. Please can any member tell me what fuse rating/s I should be used in model boats? I have seen advertised some fuse holders that come with a 20amp fuse which are described as being for RC aircraft. Would they be suitable for boats as well?
