The blades I have one-sided teeth and have tried pressuring wood against the blade but to no effect -even if the blade was cylindrical I can't see it would make a difference -but thanks for your thoughts!

This probably sounds a bit daft but have you tried cutting with it?
There are a couple of saws which do just what you describe (vibrate) and they are design to cut wood and other rigid materials, but not kiddies fingers in schools.
I had a similar one which was lost in the fire.

    Hi Tony
I was thinking that the mechanism may be damaged or clogged up so dismantling and freeing up/cleaning may restore it to working condition. My guess would be that the prolonged use resulted in heat which may have caused sawdust to bake onto the vibrating parts. My bandsaw blade sometimes has a similar problem with the two top sliding guides when cutting certain exotic hardwoods.

I'll take another look at the rubber sleeves but at first sight they appear OK. As for removing the top plate -my understanding is the plate you mention is directly above the electro magnetic coil and it has the bottom fastening connection to the blade -so removing it would not allow me to attach a blade.

    Hi Tony
Rubber rings? from 2008 - almost certainly to have perished or hardened. If they are bolted then surely they can be removed? Could just be an accumulation of dust etc that has clogged up the bushing. As I mentioned there was a post suggesting removal of the plate solved the problem so I think you will have to bite the bullet.

Thanks for your thoughts Dave, but I've taken it fully apart and cleaned it up. Removing the top plate above the the electromagnetic coil is a no no! That is attached with 6 bolts with rubber shock absorbing rings.

    Hi TonyAsh
Looked on Google and there are several posts with similar problems from 2008. Would appear the problem lies in the electromagnet mechanism but without a detailed pic it is difficult to comment further. One post says they removed the top plate? and it worked ok. I think you need to disassemble further to find the problem- my guess would be dust or debris in the moving mechanism.

Sometime ago I acquired a shapecraft fret saw model 1000. The blade vibrates but doesn't move up and down. I took the saw apart, cleaned it up including the contacts and still the blade doesn't move up and down. The blade is 133mm and I can't see online any longer blades -I'm assuming that's the problem as unconnected to the arm there is some movement between the plate and the electromagnetic coil. Does anyone have an answer to this problem? It goes against the grain to dump it!
