    Hi, the 'odd' servo?
I really cant remember why this was installed (its not there now).
The photo was taken during construction (about 7 years ago).
I think the original plan was to separately control the jib sail or possibly to animate the figure (Capt Jack Sparrow).
The winch is spring loaded to keep it under tension, this is running inside the tube you can see in pic.
Other changes not in the original pics include installing a gearbox on the motor to step it down.
Photos as it is now attached

Hi Isaac, I thought all the sails were controlled by a single closed loop winch.
I figured it was an old location.
It could be used for other purposes, sit there inert, or be removed, only Mike knows.

She's a lovely looking vessel, and you have made a really good job of her. I love the look of her on the water. You must be very proud ! ๐Ÿ˜‰

My guess that the original mast/sail configuration was that the "Berry" design was based on similar designs of the period. As for restoration back to the original design, I've seen that done on other old ships, buildings, etc, for historical purposes which appropriate in many cases.

Probably someone got hit by that enormous boom! ๐Ÿ˜‚
A twin mast would have smaller sails - much easier to handle the canvas I would think and possibly better balanced.

I wonder why they added a second mast and sails to the original boat? And why restore it to original configuration ( as I saw the real ship back in 2019 )?

    your question :
Hi Mike, congratulations on your ship model.
What is the servomechanism/winch in the center (Futaba s300) for?

looks like the control for the forward sail ( there is a spool next to that servo ( arm is not shown ) .

    Thanks for the complementary comments.
Yes she sails really well without the aid of the motor (I prefer to sail like this). I've never tried her in heavy winds (and won't be doing).
Don't know how much ballast there is (weight) but there is plenty - lead shot and resin. Put into place by sliding down a tube.
I sent the plans to someone in USA through this forum abut 5/6 years ago.
Some additional photos - the video would be too long if I included everything. Will do another video soon and put a camera on the boat - will update when done.
Decking made from Greggs coffee stirrers and black wool for the caulking. Had to replace the original sail material as gone mouldy.
I got lots of tips from reading this website so thanks to you.
    Mike
