When space runs out .....

On the back of reading all the posts since my last one (thanks for sharing, all of you, not only entertaining but thought provoking as well - I have two grandkids now, Amelia just 3 and Greer 8 months, so perhaps some boat naming needs to happen....), and bearing in mind Will's comments re the 'real' boat count, I've just asked my wife how many pairs of shoes does she own.

Guess what, she mysteriously 'doesn't know' 🤔, but when I asked if it was over 30, she kind of sheepishly avoided the question, acknowledging there were " lots, but I don't wear them all...and sometimes give some away...". 😉 All I know is there are boxes and boxes of them in our wardrobe. Nuff said!😁

Understanding Wife. ......maybe not quite so understanding if your wife found out exactly how many boats you have stashed away Will 🤣

A loft - maybe well hidden and not inspected by the wife too often....?

A Lock-Up 15 miles away - you could (and do) stash tons of them away in there, and maybe not inspected by the wife too often?

Your boat security and camouflage level's are very high - well done 👍

Excellent comments all. I would add an understanding & supportive wife to the top of Alessandro’s tool list. Disclaimer, I’m not in anyway suggesting one’s wife is a tool, only that her support is at the top of any list.
Mike S’s comment about tidying up after one’s passing is what concerns my wife; a valid issue. Each of my two sons & three grandsons gets a boat. My only granddaughter gets the sailor’s valentines I’ve crafted. Flash! Next boat will be named after my granddaughter & designated for her! Six boats accounted for is a rather small part of my fleet. That’s why I am attempting to sell/donate one when I start a new one. Admittedly I am falling behind in the sell/donate portion. So, I also am always interested in what others are doing.

Hi Alessandro, your comments about what family can do with the boats remind me of yesterday. I attended the funeral of an old friend who has over 30 boats in his garage, all home made, including IOM, Wee Nips, Racing Sparrows, powered racing boats, etc.

None of his family are interested. While there another old gent was saying that he used to sail rc yachts quite successfully, however when he had to dispose of his boats he could not so he scrapped them (with an axe) after removing electronics. I only have 14 boats so might have to start weeding out what is not being used, then start building again.

Thanks for the photos Nick. If my wife says anything in the future I shall show her the pictures of your models!

Though I do have lots of other stuff from other hobbies and DIY that gets mentioned now and again!

Now that our youngest son has moved out again after his "temporary" stay (3 years!) after working abroad I've got room to move stuff around in the house again and redo the workroom/small bedroom - which like for others gets used for general storage as well.

Hi Mike, everything is fantastic.
I like the place, I like your ship models, excellent choices and excellent intentions, fantastic connection with your wife, but what's even more fantastic are your wonderful grandchildren, especially with those Italy shirts, hahahaha.
Excellent taste, congratulations, hahahaha.

I repeat what I said to Duncan about ship modeling being passed down to young people from their grandparents.
Well done, Mike, well done.

When space runs out .....

Good afternoon, my dear crafting friends,
I see that some of you are lucky enough to have large rooms. But for others who live in flats, this poses a space problem.
I have solved this problem in the following way:
Before I started building boats again, I had built a small workshop in the basement so that I could carry out any repairs to our flat or vehicles myself.
Then came my retirement, including Corona (not the beer...), and our lives changed. Now I have my craft room.
The next step, agreed with my wife, was to convert my former home office into my small workshop.
My wife has established clear guidelines here on what makes for a healthy home life.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
The next step was to name the ships. Previous ships were named after my four children and equipped with simple transmitters and receivers, including batteries and instructions.
Four boats are now ready, and the next five are waiting to be resurrected...
One day, each child and grandchild will receive a boat; this has been clearly stipulated.
Twenty years ago, I gave the house to one of my children and moved into a 4.5-room flat. At that point, I did not realise that my old hobby would take hold of me once again. . . .
Yes, now I would be happy to have more space again. But honestly, when we pass away, who will tidy up? The children, the same problem everywhere. Those who think ahead also help their successors.
What pains me personally is that today's youth show no interest in model building. I am trying to get my grandchildren to join me in a project. Whether it will bear fruit... We'll see in a few years!
I'll say goodbye for now, pictures to follow.
Your Michel-C.

Some great replies here - I can relate.😁 My various modelling areas are in constant state of flux, re-arranging again and again to try and make them more efficient. The main room for storage is our 'Dog Room', where our Springer and Cocker spaniels sleep while sharing space with weights equipment, washing and model planes/boats!😊
Then there's one of the spare rooms, full of plans and some of the bits from the Vivacity build...oh, and spare chairs for the dining area...
I have a shed which is in constant use with all sorts of projects from model painting to garden bits to fixing stuff...
Then there's the actual dining table, which I inconveniently need to keep clearing so we can eat...you're probably starting to get the picture, no pun intended...

As for my wife's concerns... well, she gets a whole other spare room to fill herself with her knitting/soft toy/sewing stuff, as well as the couch, so suddenly I don't feel too guilty.🤔

And as my wife often points out, if we're not in the garden together, she always knows where to find me...😉.

As far as hobbies are concerned, I say more is better!

Best regards,

Nick

I will try that Dave, but if you don't hear from me for some time, it would be safe to assume that your idea did not work out too well............

Very nice Martin. I could do with something like that for my motorcycles and scooter! Model boats are no problem! 😁

Try giving them 'cute' names, or even ask your wife to name them. She'll have a stake in their well being if she does that.
(I have to say that I haven't tried this myself, but please let us know if it works!)

I have no answer to this question, but my wife has several !

............and none of them include keeping them all, or being too happy about any new additions that further increase the numbers !

Hiding them is one possibility, but I would have to learn quickly about mining and tunnel making........😎

I'm fairly tight on space, but I do have a small bedroom that is exclusively mine and is home to most of my boats. I am planning to put up some more shelving soon to make life a little easier.

My wife quite likes the boats - I recently moved my Billing's Samson II out of the lounge and upstairs into my modelling den, and she keeps asking when it can come back.

It needs a little renovation, and once done, it will return to the top of the cabinet, next to my Boulogne Etaples.

Well, sort of in my case. I only got into the hobby a few years ago so there was always going to be a limit on how many I could build.

Some of us like collecting things and so I set myself the target of building the classic Faireys which is basically four models. But then I wanted to build something different, but still Faireys and added another three. Plus I wanted to build something with a water-jet so that's another project and now I've added something else, the Sprite Plus with an outboard - wanted to do something with an outboard anyway. Oh, and I bought two Faireys that Dave Milbourn built.

I've also got six RTR/ARTR power boatsand yachts and a Tamiya Unimog but that's going to be it.

Still quite a number but others have far more and planes and trains. so not too bad! 🤔 😀

Is there such a thing as "enough" for folks like us? 😁

When is enough, enough? One must remember that this is a hobby. It is not our profession. It is something we do to stay flexible, keep our minds active, during the cold winter months. At least here in Canada.

You could try reading the full series of Louis Penny’s books. Or All Creatures Great and Small, or something else.

Try baking, or puzzles, or community service groups. Some sort of social interaction that stimulates creativity.

Take an art class in Oil or acrylic painting, sketching or other forms of artistic expression.

You could also take a look at your boat and see if it can be modified?

There probably isn't an easy answer to this problem.☹️ Can the Xmas boxes go anywhere else?

I'm lucky that I do have models in the house. My wife's sister mentioned that she liked model boats and wouldn't mind one on display. So my wife couldn't argue too much when I said "there, they make nice display items!"

I think I'm pushing my luck though now as when I buy or build another she says "and where's that one going?"

I won't show you all my photos to rub salt into the wounds, but here's a few of my builds, never mind my RTR boats and yachts.

Ahhh; the age old problem. Most folks I know begin selling some of their boats. I’ve done that, do that. Ya ain’t gonna make any money! 😐 I’ve also donated a few to local museums & donated a few for auction by charitable organizations.

When space runs out .....

Hi all, lack of space in the house means I am confined to the loft for my modelling.
Along with the usual problems such as spray painting, which restricts my choice of paints etc, I seem to have run out of room. My loft isn't massive but I have squeezed in a sizeable table and a few racks/shelves for my builds.
However, it's also used for storage for a lot of other stuff, camping gear, the obligatory Xmas boxes etc.
I have now run out of shelf space for new builds. 😮
SWMBO forbids any of my builds to be displayed around the home, I don't debate this with her as she tends to overlook the amount of money I spend on my hobbies....😉
What do YOU do with your builds when you run out of space?
I should add I build mostly static which drastically reduces the selling options!🙄
