Difficult Restoration's?

Hi Thomas - I have other projects so I won't be starting anything else for awhile. Sorry to hear about your carpul tunnel problem. Play has stopped for me as well at the moment as I suddenly developed pain in my wrists and fingers around three weeks ago. Still got to wait for another week to have a blood test before the doctor can do anything.

Interesting to read about you wanting to run boats in the snow. Didn't know you could do that!

Hi Chum444,
IF ONLY, I have been waiting for ever for a decent snow fall just to have some fun in the snow with both of these boats..
The Graupner I haven't even had that on the water yet. I am a bit wary of running a tunnel hull on water.
It is a new thing for me in my 66 years of running model boats.
Even thougth I am a self confesed speed freak.
I wrecked a 6 week old 15 cc engine by upping the Nitro to 85% to try and get more speed from it.
It bent the con rod and blew it out of the bottom of the engine.
Still you live and learn. My brother said I was mental.

Just have words with the big man up in the sky and send me a mga snow storm instead ofn RAIN. Please. 👍👍🤣🤣🚤🚤

Hi jumpugly,
If we are ever lucky enogh to get enough snow then I will run my boats in the snow and get some video.
But I have been waiting for about four years since I saw video on youtube of someone riunning a Miss Giecco in the snow on there.
I am waiting in vain, believe me.

HI ChrisF,
I am about to go into have Carpul Tunnel Surgery so I won't be able to do anything just yet.
They say I won't be able to drive for a few weeks.
But as soon as I can get to sort it out, I will let you know, I will need to sort out a strong box so that it wouldn't get damaged in transit.
Also find out how much the postage would be up to Warickshire, then I would let you know.
I could then send you a couple of pictures of one of the hulls and then we could agree a price.
regards

I'm still interested in one of your fibreglass Huntsman hulls Boatshed if and when you want to sell.

Here's my TFL outboard for an upcoming build. It's a big old beast and fitted with a 2075kV water-cooled inrunner motor.

Hi jumpugly,
I love your Tunnel Hull Cat.
I have the same outboard sitting on my shelf.
But it has no motor in it.
I removed the 540 motor and planed to try putting in a reasonable brushless and put on one of my boats but not sure which one yet.
It still has all it's original stickers on it as you can see in the first 2 pictures.
Third picture is the Krick Brushless Outboard, that I planed to put on the Aerokits Sea Hornet
when I dig that out and clean it all up.
it used to have a Enya 19 Glow engine in it. I plan to strip all the paint and clean all the old glow residew out of it then repaint and fit the outboard and new R/C.

I also have the Graupner Rhode Island F1 Tunnel Hull that has the Brushless outboard on it.
Still not been on the water yet, I am a bit scared of using it, I have been waiting for a big snow fall to give it a try in the snow.

Also I would love to give a go of the Proboat Miss Geicco in the snow.
I think both of those could be fun in the snow but it would need to be about 4 to 5 inches deep.
trouble is here in the UK we havn't had a decent snow fall for years.

I recently sold a F1 Tunnel hull, that had a large outboard with a 2230KV brushless motor in it.I have been selling off a few of my model boat over the last two years, sold 7 so far.
3 RAF Cras Tenders, an MFA Spearfish, a Navicraft Outrage, a 1970's Stratos/Hydrofibre Interceptor, a 4ft unmade batboat styled boat.
And also my one 5th 26cc R/C Buggy.
Still going to sell a couple more as well, I have a 52" Stratos/Hydrofibre Pipedream with a Outdrive on it, as in the 4th picture. I did plan to put that electric stat Zenoah into it but I sold that as well.
I have sold off all of my IC engines, too many place around now banning them

On the subject of outboards. I restored this Kyosho Wave Runner a while back, resealed the hull, added a new paint scheme and decals, but the hull is a dog and difficult to keep dry. The outboard however, albeit a bit under-powered, is a nice set-up. If I can't sort this hull maybe I'll repurpose the outboard. When I get back up to the cabin, I'll tub test her again and see if I can make it work.

Wolle,
Great find!
It will be a wonderful addition to your harbor when refurbed.
I believe that is a Robbe kit 2141, "Robbe RC Modell Schiff Boot Wotan Emden"
The Graupner Emden ship was a WW1 German Light Cruiser.

So far my collection resembles "The Island of Misfit Toys". I've picked up several boats that are old builds and have been neglected. I'm giving them the TLC they need, hoping to bring them back to their former glory. Once I get enough practice/ experience I intend to take on a full build.

Hello!
Here are a few more pictures of my Wotan. I bought it for 5 euros from an old sailor. I had to promise him that I would definitely get the ship back on the water. It's a Graupner herring lugger.

Thanks for all the insights.
I understand that the transom could be modified.
But, as Chris said, changing the transom and mounting an outboard would definitely change the character of the skiff.
It was a passing thought, but probably not a very good one .... 😂
After giving it some consideration, I think the Skiff will remain a shelf queen.
Someday, I will find a boat more suitable for hanging an outboard on.

Dave, as Ron says a notch in the transom is feasible along with a waterproof compartment or well as used on speed boats etc. but the trouble is that you are changing the design and character of the skiff.

The other problem is steering, obviously on full-size this would be done by the driver directly. This really is a challenge in small models as I found with my Faun build - at least I had some licence as owners had modified their boats and steering was from a wheel.

Unless you 3D print (not something I'm into yet) it is difficult to find new outboards with long shafts. For an upcoming project I'm using a TFL which is really for raceboats/ tunnel hulls and because of its short shaft I'm having to mount it very low with the mount only just above the waterline. Not a problem with a self-design rather than a model of a full-size boat.

Also the outboard is physically bigger than I really wanted and so the build will be as well so that the combination doesn't look silly.

The transom is easily notched to receive one of those outboards. Not an issue with water intake especially if you add a shield in the transom and weight forward.

Ron,
Here are some more details about the Skiff.
It is 30.5" long, and almost 10" Beam at the widest part. The transome height is a little over 4".
I have had delusions of mounting an outboard on her at times.
I have a Kyosho/Jackson 540 and a Graupner 600, both looking for homes. However, as you can see, the shafts on both motors are too short to work on this boat.
So, for now, she is a shelf queen. At least I have rescued her from being subjected to cooking grease 🤣.

She looks beautiful. I can sense how brittle everything on deck looks though. Sometimes its best to start those pieces from scratch again. I had a Revell plastic concerted SAR boat a few years ago and if you breathed the wrong direction near it something would break. On the first trip out in some chop parts where literally falling overboard though eventually there wasn't much more to fall off 😂

Beautiful ship, I like it. I enjoy restoring ships, especially working vessels, and they have to be old, with an old hull shape. A hole in the hull is perfectly fine, like on the Oceanic. You can repair anything if you want, and then make it look old and dirty. I like that. I have another old ship waiting in the wings; I'll show it to you soon.

Hello everyone!
As I mentioned before, I have a model waiting for me... well, there will be some work to do on the construction!
A complete solid wood module at the front, the same at the rear near the rudder and drive, as well as a closed frame unit every 8 cm. . .
A stand model, basically. 🙈🙈🙈
Somehow I'll manage it.
But first I have to finish the harbor, then fit the sailboat with new sail ropes inside and... and... and...

But who am I telling this to, when I see your successes! Great work, friends!
Yours, Michel-C.

Not exactly a restoration, but...

As I await some odds and ends to arrive, I put the Bulebird K-7 on the shelf and out of sheer bored madness pulled out an old pile of warped Dumas Hydroplane plywood that was stuffed into a closet and set about laying the bricks to it...LITERALLY!!!!!

Chum,
Here are a couple of pictures.
I got 3 boats from a person on FB Marketplace, all 3 for $5.00.
One of them is a static Row Boat Skiff, another was a KNK Jupiter M401, and the third was the Corvette.
All of them had been sitting on top of kitchen cabinets over the cook stove. The Corvette suffered the worst damage because it would not fit the space above the kitchen cabinet with the windshield intact.
All of them had a very thick layer of dust-infused cooking grease as a result of years of exposure to kitchen fumes.
I spent countless hours cleaning all three boats. The Jupiter and Corvette were built as display models, and as such had no motors or electronics. The Corvette was in the worst shape. The Jupiter and Corvette are now both fully functioning RC Boats.

Great looking boat Dave. What condition was it in when you found it? The Corvette always reminds me of my vacations on the St. Clair River upstream from the Chris experimental/new product yard in Algonac, Mi. As kids we would take one of our boats down there & drool over boats we saw. CC also did a lot of filming nearby off Walpole Island for their sales brochures.
Did you replace the running gear or will it be a display model?
Again, well done.

These are wonderful HH and Wolle!!!!!!!!!!

When I started to restore old Tamiya 1/10th scale r/c F1 kits, I'd wake up screaming at night. But, when I was done they'd look great and I took an immense amount of pride in the work. a satisfying challenge to say the least.

As for boats, I am most proud of my "Hawaii Kai" and "Miss Wahoo," both were caught in a fire and were burnt black husks that I put a lot if effort into bringing them back to life.

The ship turned out great.

Here I have my OCEANIC.
Only the Titanic looks worse.

I cleaned it with a scourer and did not repaint it. It should look old. I added rust and had to completely rebuild the rudder.

Curious to read about any difficult restoration projects everyone has had?

Last year i restored 4 boats from club members who are no longer with us and they varied from30 years to almost 80 years old.

One in particular had me wishing i never started. It was a Picket boat originally built as a static in late 1940's and then has passed through multiple members fleets before being on display for 20 years after her last outing in salt water.

Shes made mostly of teak and mahogany cuts and has had multiple repairs over the years. A good thick layer of fibreglass had been added too which is where my nightmare started.

Since her last outing was in sea water and she hadn't been rinsed. The propshaft was fused in the stuffing tube to the point i could hear the fibreglass cracking when i tried to turn the prop. I tried Wd40, drain cleaner and an air line to try shift it but nope it wasn't to be.

I ended up connecting both ends to an old heating iron to try expand it and after doing just that every night for a week it finally started to loosen up.

Lots and lots of pipe cleaner and degreaser later the stuff tube was clean. I kept the original shaft and sanded all the pitting down before adding new grease and reinstalling. The motor had loose ends in the can so that was a bin job and the rudder needed heat as well to release.

Here she is on her re-maiden. This was 2 months ago and she has changed slightly with skipper now along with smoke system and brighter lights.

Will update video in the coming week

So please share some of you're horror stories as it's always a good place to learn how we all get past workshop barriers,
