SMS Emden plus maiden video
So where to start. I took ownership of this broken, split and damaged Emden that had been in the club for many years. The hull is around 50 years old and had never been sailed before. Hull is a mystery as there's cardboard, plywood then fibreglass.
Fittings kit on deck was completed around 12 years ago and obtained from the Deans marine Embden.
I had to remove the original prop shafts and motors as everything was seized solid. I believe this boat was sunk when our clubhouse was flooded!
Twin Radiolink esc's, rc helicopter gyro and a 12v lead acid battery
3D printed scale like props
Overall she sails very well.

Cruise/ferry ship mk2
So I had success with a small cruise/ferry last year. I had received what could only be called broken stl files. Overall it was a lovely design though had come from someone with no experience in the marine side of things. He had designed it though upon printing it realised it had a tendency of capsizing or splitting the back in the middle. So gave up on the whole thing.
I saved the files and updated them all for a strong and more scale like hull.
My small 40cm version was great and even though a tiny ship the presence on the water was incredible.
I've decided I need a larger one for this year.
The difference though is this build isn't going to be a simple stick together, sand and paint then get on the water.
No this is going to be wood line the internal space then sand and coat in resin thus creating a smooth one piece hull. That'll add the extra ballast weight for me instead of having to add weights.
I'm then going to hand paint her to mimic the real version though will be altering a few parts of the paint design to my own taste.
For power she's going to be a triple motor. One speed 400 in the middle and 2 380 brushed on the outside that run through a Forge mixer for differential steering. There will also be a scale like rudder in the centre with the centre motor only being used for windy or rough days.
A bow thruster may be added though thats not for certain just yet.
Power will be supplied by twin 2s 1000mah lipo batteries along with 2 60amp esc and 1 40amp esc. Rudder will use a metal gear 9g servo.
There will also be a Rudder gyro onboard that will help her track easier and fight any tendency to slide out
The plan is to install working navigation lights that will operate off an electronic switch allowing on and off from the transmitter and spinning radar powered by a 3v motor. A Bluetooth speaker system for some music that combines a cruise ship horn and engine sounds.
Overall she should come in at around 1.1m long and an auw of 8kg
She continues to print as i type this so will add more photos as she continues to grow

CheckMate camera jetboat project
This is fresh off the printer and custom built for my local river. She will be the next first person viewing boat for this year ahead and will be powered by a 540 brushed motor running through a 40mm jet drive system. Forced and independent water cooling system, bilge pump and 5mm thick hull for bashing off rocks going upstream. Twin 2s 2000mah lipo batteries in parallel and a 160amp esc as theres no airflow
Should get a maiden in the week of 7th of February 2026

Tuggy
So tuggy came about from a tugboat/working boat i see on a visit to New York many years ago as a child. The classic design remained etched in my mind and last year decided to design that same elegant form and print my version.
She has a working fire monitor which is variable. It'll happily reach 25ft! And 10ft high. Working lights and is powered by a mighty 850 brushed motor which doubles as ballast.
She has a working bilge pump for if used in the sea and she gets water onboard. An own design 3 blade high torque low rpm propeller and a rudder curved out an old Krick model stand. She runs very well and had in excess of 100 hours time on both pond and sea last year

Cruise ship?
So this is a mix mash. The original file for similar i found for sale on a 3d printing website however the design had lots of flaws and one that included a hole in the bottom.
I got to work and addressed all the issues along with redesigning the hull to allow for a single prop and 90 degree rudder. She's powered by a tiny 1000kv brushless motor and 5amp esc. Runs on a 1s 1000mah lipo.
She's now permanently in dry dock and lives as an ornament as she didn't work out as well as I'd have liked.
As I type this her mk2 version is printing and is bigger, more powerful and has a far better hull design.

Toy model conversion to replicate my real yacht
So I always wanted an rc version of my own Hurley 22 sailing yacht and it came along in the form of this little broken toy grade yacht.
I stripped her internals out and replaced with a drum winch along with a standard servo for rudder. Reworked the lines and resprayed her to mimic the real yacht.
She sails very well and with the permanently installed 2s 1800mah its enough for a weeks worth of sailing

Zulu fishing boat
Here is my Zulu. She is approximately 70 years old and had been a static display model in a museum, church and community centre for many years. I spent some time carving deeper into her timber, fibreglass and metal hull to get low enough to line with lead in order for her not to capsize instantly.
I fitted her out with a simple return to shore propshaft and 540 motor though that isn't used often at all unless we have no wind.
Her sails fly freely. There's no winches etc. A large 15kg high torque servo powers her rudder.
No stick on keel here she is as she would have been in real life. Sails majesticaly and has great presence wether sailing on the pond, river or at sea

Bad Ass and Green Streak airboat's
2 but shortly will be 20 rc airboats. I found a free stl file for a 3d printed airboat and got to work altering it with an inbuilt air tight section in the bow and a better laid out hull along with clean wire free motor and rudder installation. Everything is serviceable and removes with a couple of screws.
They have a small gyro to help them track better and are powered by 1800kv motor, 40amp esc and a 2s 1000 30c lipo.
Rubber bumper strip and the option for FPV camera
These are for a new low cost racing league for our club this year.
I say low cost as its ยฃ2.19 to print each boat. 87p for esc, ยฃ1.10 for servo, ยฃ6 motor, ยฃ7 propeller, ยฃ10 lipo! So ยฃ27.16 if you have you're own transmitter and receiver.
The optional gyro can be found for as little as ยฃ5 though i increased the depth of the strakes on the flat hull to help them track better

HAGGIS 150 Outboard
This came about from wanting to build a harbour support vessel though couldn't find the correct outboard. I spotted some Stl files for an outboard that was poorly designed and had been proven not to work. I took these files and amended several parts and altered the shape of the leg slightly.
Instead of working with a shaft and gears its a flexshaft coupled to a 540 brushed motor with a realistic water cooling inlet and outlet. It's designed for high torque and low speeds. Its fitted with my own designed 3 blade high pitch propeller for maximum thrust at low rpm.
Has been tested in the bath so far and works very well. Just needing to build or find that harbour support to attach a couple or 4 of these too
Here it is running on the test hull.

A Beginners Vessel
Testing the water with this one as although i enjoy building boats from scratch i also enjoy designing them and printing them which takes up many many hours.
I'm still indecisive to what it should be called as in my eyes it's not a flat plan build so cannot be classed as scratch built.
So here she is. Her name is "Le Boat" and a very small just under 26cm long very basic mock up multiple old french trawlers i was basing her on.
The idea behind her was to provide newcomers to our club a very basic, cheap and easy to glue together model that the first timer would still be proud of.
They still have to paint and fit the running gear so it's a short but positive learning curve that will hopefully have them wanting to progress from there.
The actual model is right now printing and will be finished in 20 hours so will update how she will really look then.
Motor 280-380
10-15amp esc
9g servo though smaller might work just as well
2s li-ion 800mah
Will probably print some netting along with a couple of sailors for the deck, maybe a box of fish though will see how she comes out

Not prostate however testicular checks should be paramount too. I had testicular cancer at 33 and it was found by chance when in for scans for a different issue. Its not the end of the world if they need to go though as we had sperm removed and have a lovely healthy 3 year old boy. The ongoing for life treatment is rubbing a gel on my shoulders called Nebido which is testosterone or you can opt for a 10 weekly injection instead.
Definitely in the down below department nastiness can hide fairly well so regular checks are a must

Bit more progress in the last 48 hours. That's all her part's now printed. Next it's sanding along with filler time and then more sanding. Propulsion system is work in progress and awaiting 2 M2 shafts arriving for the outer motors. Rudder is printed and awaiting a servo arriving to link that though in two ways whether to have the rudder fixed as with the 2 outers i doubt there will be any issues with manoeuvring. She will have 5 blade props on the outers and 4 blade on the centre.
I've a bunch of nav lights and underwater illumination lights to wire up.
Sea trials, I'm aiming for the 25th of March and hopefully cosmetically finished by mid April.

Yes she didn't look too frightening though the 18 guns along with torpedoes and her speed made her the success she was. I still have several to add though my resin printer is currently sick. It was her masts that took me back as these where broken. I can't get over how tall they where on the real ship. Wouldn't have like to shuffle up them to maintain the top.
My model version is about to get another slight refit with smaller motors and a new rudder to single prop mix.
I have an Arduino gps autopilot to fit for summer which will allow me to set a course and it'll follow that until i flick a switch on my transmitter. Can have the course as a constant slow loop around the pond so i can sail other boats ๐

Thank you. They are fairly tall. This isn't our normal pond so normally its easier to launch without having to lean right down. I don't know how thr wee pond is dropping when its not stopped raining for a month ๐.
I fly rc planes in the rain too. Internals stay dry and if water does manage to get in everything including the receiver is waterproof. I've never had any issues sailing in rain or snow. Transmitter normally goes into a bag over my hands if its torrential rain and I'll stand in the shelter though find it very therapeutic being able to listen to rain hitting the pond whilst sailing at the same time. Rc helicopters are even better since you see the vortex of the rain under the rotors ๐

Hi DuncanP!
Wow she has beautiful lines. A lovely though simple hull. Upper structure a little tougher though not impossible. I'd happily try replicating her later in the year to around the 1 metre mark. I'm tied up with print orders for our club along with some of my own at the moment. Will be upgrading to 2 even bigger printers in August to help speedup the print rate.
In the meantime i'll look into her more ๐

Pop the kettle on for me ๐ that sound bliss. The belt idea sounds far better and probably best for ironing out minor vibrations. Its for my cruise ship. I've a motor in the middle though I've 3 propshafts. I was going to run a small 280 motor in the middle and then have the outers running off one Graupner Speed 600. I could easily go for additional motors etc but I find pulleys, gears, belt aesthetically pleasing to the eye and they are enjoyable to tinker with

A good solid brushed esc for less than ยฃ5 is one of these. I use them in all my brushed boats from scale to speedboats and they are fantastic. 320amp? No they certainly are not though I've pulled 60amp safely out of them on a 3s lipo at full throttle with no air flow and never had an issue. They are waterproof too. Fwd/Rev they are 50/50 and can be programmed on a generic program card. I've had 1 out of maybe 50 fail and that was my own error.
Highly recommended. My second cheap recommendation is IDST 70amp Bluetooth esc. It connects to an app so you can set everything up exactly how you want. It allows you to adjust whilst you sail and gives good telemetry feedback live

In regards to more channels. Have a look at the Radiolink TD12. You can get it with the RF16 receiver. 12 channel transmitter with a 16 channel receiver? Yes you can programme the transmitter to use 2 channels in parallel. They are coming down in price now. I use one as my secondary transmitter for boats and planes and it's been fantastic.

That looks like she's running very clean through the water! I need a stern-drive now! Such beautiful lines that hull. Where do you sail as that water looks very nice too.
Sometimes my designs come from other's failed designs. I'll study them to see where they went wrong then adapt to make them work. I then try reach back to the original designers to share the results along with new files for them to advertise again.
My projects mainly consist of abandoned boats of boats that have been sunk and broken. Always like to give them a fresh lease of life.
One thing a little off topic though maybe you would know. I'm looking for a 1 into 2 gearbox.
I feel like i've seen one but not sure. Its for one motor to turn two shafts. I swear i seen one before and its all metal but i've never managed to find it again

Hi Chris
Thats what I like about designing these boats. It all starts either all the components i want to use on a piece of paper then I draw round it to see where everything will go. From there I'll transfer it over to the likes of tinkercad and start playing with a basic shape from there. I'll normally print a 4 inch model of the hull and super glue string onto the bow and put it in the bath and pull it along to see how it sits in the water. If all looks ok I'll build larger.
I do like you're scale like jetboat design though I'm afraid it wouldn't last where I use the jetboats ๐. There's two specific rocks on the river and if you hit them at the right angle you can get some good airborne trips. If you hit it wrong then its wet feet time or back to the drawing board.
Last year I had a 3 month project on propellers and efficiency. I printed lots of different designs the compared them with the same hull at same throttle on stop watch. I try to split the year into several projects though this year theres so many and so little receivers for them all.
Next week im hoping to have the basic parts of the larger cruise ship hull completed though its the first 3d printed hull im going to fibreglass i think on the inside and coat in epoxy resin on the outside to make it completely smooth. That will be new to me so will be an interesting learning curve

We update. Thats the CheckMate ready for the river after a short pond test. This is on 2s lipo thoigh it is designed for 4s. Will see how it does on 2s initially as has ample power. As long as it can fight the current without being at full throttle I'll be happy.
I have decided to design an A-frame with a foam block on top and that way it'll self right.
All that will have to wait however as I'm away to visit family 200 miles away tomorrow for 2 days. Already feeling the lack of boats withdrawal setting in ๐

I'm literally just starting to work on the jetboat now before im away for 2 nights. Hopefully get it in the water next week after I work out a few issues. I've accidentally printed the hole in the hull a little too big so will have to fill it in a little. Should be fine
