Park lakes

We share Cold Knap lake in Barry with a multitude of swans and 'share' can be taken literally as they frequently leave their 'calling cards' in the area where we launch.
When the winds before the rain, soon you may make sail again, but when the rain's before the wind, tops'l sheets and halyards mind

"........PS I'm not sure if any other members are in the Leeds area who may be interested in sailing at Roundhay Park, please contact me........."

I have a son living close to there who might be interested in model boat sailing opportunities...

Park lakes

You may remember I was having a long running discussion with Leeds city council about sailing on the two lakes at Roundhay Park and seemed to be getting knoware. Until a new councilor took up the challenge and it seems all systems could be "GO" I'm meeting him at the lake on Wednesday.
Fingers crossed

Correct Marky,
that's why the cruisers were Exeter, Ajax and Achilles.
Wonder what happened to their Graf Spee?
The 'enemy' they have now is more like the Bismarck from the main guns!

I also remember this when we holidayed in Scarborough again some 50 years ago, Peasholm Park was in the North bay (posh part) which is quite a way around Marine Drive. I still holiday there in my touring caravan we stay at the a site just above North Bay.

Brings back fond memories of summers when me and my brothers trying to sneak in to watch for free ,I'm sure the park is near the cricket ground used to try and sneak in there too ,am sure in the 70s they used to re-enact to some degree the battle of the river plate.

No great shakes Neville,
I just Googled 'Peasholm Park Scarborough UK', where I found the videos, as You Tube links. Followed the links and then just copied the You Tube Web addresses into the post. No rocket science!
Happy viewing and reminiscing👍

Odd, in the 50s and early 60s we lived in North Lincolnshire and occasionally went to Scarborough but I never heard of Peasholm Park or the naval battles, Shame 🤔

NPJ, if you do can you post some pictures please?
Many, many years since I was there and would be nice to see it again. Quite a long way from my home in Canada now.

That was Peasholm Park and I remember them too. According to Google the naval battles still
continue. Must be one of the longest actions in history!

Park lakes

This thread has reminded me of times at a lake in Scarborough Park yorkshire.

There used to be boats and aeroplanes with evening shows of battles.

Aeroplanes on wires dropped bombs and ships fired guns etc.

Great stuff.

Apart from some blanket weed which floats from the adjoining shall pools during this hot weather the main lake is weed free naturally. You are more likely to hit an inquisitive duck. Cheers Colin.

Colin H in particular...............

Is your lake 'naturally' weed free or do you manage it?

My local lake is having a load of trouble with weed.

I always smile when reading of problems with "Councils". Usually it's just some "jobsworth" in a (Parks)department with a personal attitude. We once had general lack of cooperation from one Parks Superintendent who had no time for those "Old Farts" with their toy boats. He was very unpopular and eventually moved on. Life at the pondside was greatly improved.

There is no reason why wild life and boaters can exist side by side. We had a similar problem some years ago where we were accused of chasing the wildlife,After explanations to the council that the public were feeding the wildlife all over the place they decided to put in a duck feeding area.. since this... no problem.. stick to your guns, keep on at them. Good luck

Roundhay park has two lakes , the Waterloo lake (large) and the upper lake which is above to the left in the picture This is where we used to sail along with the paddle boats.

Park lakes

I thought Roundhay was one big lake but have they cleared out all the old ammo the home guard left behind A lot of grenades and pistol and rifle ammo was found when I was lodging by the park in about 1975/6. Apparently dumped by the Home Guard at the end of the war. ||||||||||||||Be careful out there.👍😜

As I've said elsewhere, ignore them and just say, "Prove it", when they say you can't.
My old man always said, "Never ask, boy, the Bas****s always tell you no". Done that all my life. Professional awkward sod, me.
That attitude more often than not scares the Nazis away.

Park lakes

Same here in Munich Colin, we happily share the lakes with a myriad of moorhens, ducks, geese and swans. They don't bother us and any idiot that bothers them (esp. with a speed boat) rapidly gets what he deserves from the locals! I'm very pleased to say 😉 have seen some highly 'animated' shall we say 'discussions'! Exit one red faced speed-boater 😊

Hope you get the result you deserve, I do all my testing on a 28acre weed free lake that is designated a wildlife sanctuary. it is also used by model flying boat club. And have not had any incidents in the twenty years we've been using it. Some bird watchers have even asked if we can carry a camera on the boats to film birds on the water and islands. The birds don't seem to mind.
Cheers Colin.

Good luck with your fight , we at Kingsmill model boat club in Notts sail in a nature reserve and the wildlife don't mind sharing the lake with us and can even at times see some of the wildlife hitching a lift on the boats
Former tug nut now switched to sail because of health

Park lakes

A lot of parks have now banned model boats in favour of wild life nature reserves, I have this issue with my local park Roundhay Park in Leeds Yorkshire there are two lakes both of which allowed model boats during the 60s/70s and IC at that. Both are now classed as nature reserves. I am in the process of challenging this issue with the local city council as today I am sure that wildlife and model boats (electric and sail) can share the same water space, watch this space.
