Ranks

Hi Stephen, Just to say How good this forum is, to me the rank slides we attain are a bit of fun, but, the more you help the better the rank. We all learn just by being on here.

Hi Stephen, that's the way I read it! JFF 😉
At least the discussion fired up some research on ships some members Dads were on. Also no bad thing. Keep up the good work. 👍

Ranks

Hi All, thought I best throw my thoughts in since I invented the ranking 😋

It was roughly based off the royal navy ranks, but was never supposed to be an accurate representation. Since we're a boating community it did have to be something from the maritime arena, so the navy ranks were used as the basis but are not complete of course:

Fleet Admiral
Admiral
Captain
Commander
Lieutenant
Sub-Lieutenant

Below these, the badges are not accurate, but they do provide a stylised depiction of a members rank. Some badges in the navy are specialist and not considered higher or lower in rank than others so these can't really be used.

Chief Petty Officer
Petty Officer
Seaman
Apprentice
Recruit

A recruit seems applicable more for the website than to the navy. Anyone who has registered but hasn't contributed in anyway are recruits. Then when they do anything (even liking a post) they'll be advanced to Apprentice.

Certainly don't get hung up over it. it's all for fun and to encourage people to post great content and helpful advice 👍

I've heard other forums are boring and don't have ranks at all 😉

Keep your hair on Dave 😲, we were just curious, and as a British site it's not wrong (let alone quite wrong) to wonder why foreign symbols are used. if one is going to use the rank titles .......
As I had surmised it seems Stephen just used (partially) stylised symbols (or whatever he could find back then!).
Nothing wrong with that either.
Yes we are modellers, and most of us are scale modellers where great importance is placed on accuracy of detail 😉
The reason for introducing any such such symbols, whatever they may be, is glaringly obvious.
Pax vobiscum, cheers Doug 😎

If we were associated with the RN then the ranking system would follow their system.
We are modellers and it is quite wrong to compare service ranks with those used by the site.
I do believe Stephen introduced the present system to help promote the site and encourage members to post blogs / pics etc.

Sorry Spelling should read HMS RAMPURA. She was a submarine depot ship, then heavy machine repair ship. That's all my mum could remember. it spent a lot of time out of Malta.

Hi Doug, which badges would my dad have had. He was a chief engineer on sub's 1946 to 1952. I remember the dolphin badge as a kid, sadly don't have any photos of him in uniform. He finished his navy time on sub repair ship HMS Ranpoura.( not sure spelling)
Cheers Colin.

I've often wondered that, and why some ranks are missing, or if they were simply 'stylised' !! Lord knows where the Warrant Officer and Ratings pics came from🤔
Attached a poster of the real RN badges.
Cheers Doug 😎

I have been meaning to ask this for this for ages.

Why are the Sites rank slides what appears to be US rank slides ?
