looks good, not many about now, Meteor 40 should give it speed but not too powerful nor too heavy. Please keep us posted on restoration and show some photo`s of progress.

im not an expert but dont think either would be out of place, id personally fit the one thats easiest to start. Im sure that Jerome Grainger fitted a 61 Merco or Webra but the hull was new then.

I just saw this thread that was started 8 years ago, about a very interesting model power boat that was made by SHG in the midlands.

The question regarding the choice of engine that the original thread mentioned was what my answer would have been directed at.

In short the Meteor 40 would probably have just as much (or more) power than the Merco 61, and "upgrading" to a Merco 49 would probably not be an "upgrade" at all!

The Merco engines were good value for money and they were made here in the UK, but that is probably the only two good reasons for buying one as they were quite old fashioned when they were new and were never considered to be the most powerful in their class.

Back in the late 1960's when I was still a poorly paid apprentice, I was really pleased to be able to afford to buy a new Merco 61 engine to fit in my Aerokits Swordsman and is why I remember it with some fondness, but my OS40 Marine was nicer to use and could have been just as powerful - probably better!

Good luck finding yourself an SHG Black Tornado - it looks like it is a nice Classic Model Power Boat.

Bob.

I still sail my original BT but now electric brushless,2200kv 2-3 s. I acquired another Cigarette hull with Enya 40 installed, needs a new head gasket, which I might change for a new OS 30. I also have another cigarette (not SHG) and a BT variant. Look good next to my SHG Surfury.

Hi Patric,

That is a really impressive collection of off-shore racers that you have - all of them are now Classic Model Power Boats.

If you have any pictures of them, please share them with us on the Classic Model Power Boat thread on here (link shown below).

I would really like to see them as I always fancied a Cigarette or Surfury model myself (especially when I was racing my Swordsman offshore), but I never got around to making either of them.

Bob.

Hi Patrick,
Your Tornado is looking really slick.
Have you ever clocked or calculated its top speed? I’d be curious to know what she can do out on the water. ⚓
