I hope everything goes alright this afternoon at the hospital.

Martin, That's what I thought, but it's not quite as easy as that. No doubt I'll achieve some sort of result in due course, but much of the rest of today will be spent in the hospital and I may not feel up to it when I get home tonight, or I might work on my current boat project instead.

Cheers, Nerys

Nerys,
With your skills with the clay i would imagine that as long as you can make a large blob with the 3D pen you could shape it with a hot soldering iron until you get what you want.

I realised that this was a completely new thing I was trying and didn't expect to do anything sensible on a first effort. I am experienced in general modelling with polymer clay, in fact it was a nice part of my income some years ago but the techniques for this are so different. I certainly haven't given up but I really appreciate the hours of practice that the Youtubers must have put in.

Hi Nerys,
It makes you wonder how many hours of practice the people on the videos have put in to become that good.

I am sure you will be making some useful bits soon.
Keep practicing you will get there.

This is so often the case. The video makes things look easy. Good luck with future efforts. 😊
I cannot promise to finish one project before starting another. I know, I tried.

I had a bit of a go with the 3D pen last night and decided that it is far from easy. It's going to take a lot of practice to be able to make anything to any degree of useability. I am even more impressed by the Youtube videos I've watched.

Cheers, Nerys

Excellent news Nerys👍
Funny, I've had similar experiences with Amazon.de.
Things often arrive the day before you expect them😊
So it's full steam ahead now is it?
Or whatever is used to heat the filament😁
Keep well, an' that's a FLEET order Capt.
Best wishes to you both,

Looking forward to seeing how you get on with it.
Please post some photos of your attempts if you can.

Reverting to 3D pens. I ordered from Amazon on Sunday night. Not wanting to pay £4.99 delivery to get it Thursday, I opted to receive it Friday with free delivery. Acknowledgement said, 'delivery Wednesday'. It arrived Tuesday midday.
Haven't tried it yet, had hospital visit for treatment from 16-30 to 23-15. Hope I'll feel up to it Wednesday. Watch this space.

I think these utube videos will help you to get to grips with the 3D pen.

That is probably what has happened, but they will have to be careful as i think it was the common cold virus that killed them in "the war of the worlds film.

This time we are really all 'In the same boat'! 🤔
Reminds me of a serious documentary on Nat Geo some time ago.

Hi Fleet,
It seem so strange how something that is so small that you can't see it has managed to cause such trouble worldwide.

Stay safe.

I agree with Fleet it would be very interesting to know how you get on with the 3D pen and all the problems you come across.

Me too Nerys! I belong to the 'risk group' ☹️

Keep us informed on your progress please.👍
Even the pitfalls to be avoided will be useful!
I'm beginning to wonder why I forked out 400 quid for a 3D printer🤔

That is quick Nerys,
As long as you can make a rough shape of what you want then it is just a case of filing, sanding, and filling.
Even if you have to make flat sections and glue then together untill you get roughly the shape.
Using a soldering iron to smooth the surface also helps.

Thanks Martin, Having watched the Youtube efforts of the experts, I'm not anticipating instant success because it appears to be a technique completely different from anything I have ever done before, though a few years ago I was using polymer plastic very successfully. However, with all this advice on staying at home for the over 70's, seems I might have plenty of time for practice over the next few months. Just had an email to say it's being delivered today so we'll be finding out soon.

Hi Nerys,
After looking at utube these 3D pens require a lot of practice before you start to produce something half decent.
As the saying goes "practice makes perfect".

I've ordered one off Amazon, decided to take a chance and go more or less mid range. I'm paying £70 with an extra selection of filament plus a silicon work mat. Delivery scheduled for Wednesday. Then the fun starts.

Have put a couple of piccys of the 3D pen Martin,
as I said, have had it for a few years, still sealed in the packet, you also get some sticks for you to play with, I think I paid about £90, but they have certainly dropped in price.😊

I agree with Phil Martin - well done in finding the pen . Very interesting - motor bike must have been a lot of work when you look at all the parts ................ Solve a few problems when making fittings.

As Nerys said what 3D pen to buy.
I think a bit of research first, maybe something midrange ?

Have had one of these for over two years Martin, and never used it. It comes from a company called COLIDO but on the letter D is a number 3 ie,
COLI3O if it makes sense! it can use ABS or PLA, the unit is made of aluminium and weighs 70g, can post some piccys if anybody wants them.😐

It looks brilliant, that motorbike is fantastic but can anyone give some advice on what pen to buy. On Amazon they seem to be from £80 down to £20 and on Ebay £5 up to £20. I looked at a Youtube advising what one to buy, but they were all American models. Can see all sorts of possibilities for boat bits.

Hi Guys,

I know this has nothing to do with model ships/boats but i have been watching this video and his skill is absolutely amazing and shows what can be done using a 3D Pen.

As i am useless at designing things in CAD programs and not having a clue about 3D printing i thought this will be perfect for my stile of model making.

I will definitely be looking into this and saving some money and getting myself a 3D pen.

It will be great for making small parts and maybe even crew figures.
