    Doug,
Thanks for the heads up, I have been thinking similar thoughts. Most of my rescues will be sailboats at my local club. We all get a bit twitchy when a foreign craft approaches our yachts. We have learned to maneuver our sailing yachts to rescue each other with great success.

So here's the real deal, our local park/pond frowns on the use of anything but sailing boats. That and the fact that dingys are not allowed leaves a bit of a loop hole on rescueing disabled boats. I am looking for an excuse to have my tugs on the pond occasionally. How can the park rangers object to a well intentions rescue craft??

Now back to your issue. My thinking is a winch assisted crane operation to assist in the rescue. We will see.

I made a very good living designing and building things worldwide that "could not be done". That's all part of the fun.

"Final assembly still required and some lift tests of course."
I suspect that you are about to run into the same problem I did Joe, when I fitted a winch to one of the depth charge / paravane derricks on the stern of my destroyer.

Plan was to use it with a grappling hook to rescue stranded models.
Plan died on the first trial and winch was removed and consigned to the bits box.
I'd even made a home brew forward / reverse controller for it!πŸ€” Pics attached.

Problem; winding in the cable and hook - fine.😊
But how to run it out? I found that I needed something with weight like a can of beans to pull the cable out! Scale cans of beans made of lead couldn't cut the mustardπŸ€”
Same happened when I tried it as an anchor winch. A 1/72 scale anchor cast from lead just wasn't heavy enough.
    Good luckπŸ‘
    Cheers, Doug 😎

    Martin555,
That was my thought as well, that way the load is on the barge, not on the springer tug. Besides that would give me another project to build.

See photo for possible winch patina look.

    Hi Joe,
I like the idea of a barge with a crane on it.

You could operate you'r springer to push it about then operate the crane.

    Martin555.
If it looks right it probably is.

Thanks for the positive comments. Still a work in progress, I have been thinking about winches for a while, so my initial objective was to build one with stuff from my parts bins to see how it would function. That and to keep busy during the lockdown, again without purchasing any new parts.

Thinking about the next steps, maybe some added details and paint or weathering? Final assembly still required and some lift tests of course. I have considered mounting it on my springer tug or maybe a barge with a crane, who knows?

    Ideas welcome....

    Hi Joe,
    That is working great.
    Well done.
Will you be making a cover to go over the gears ?
