I suspect that you are about to run into the same problem I did Joe, when I fitted a winch to one of the depth charge / paravane derricks on the stern of my destroyer.
Plan was to use it with a grappling hook to rescue stranded models.
Plan died on the first trial and winch was removed and consigned to the bits box.
I'd even made a home brew forward / reverse controller for it!🤔 Pics attached.
Problem; winding in the cable and hook - fine.😊
But how to run it out? I found that I needed something with weight like a can of beans to pull the cable out! Scale cans of beans made of lead couldn't cut the mustard🤔
Same happened when I tried it as an anchor winch. A 1/72 scale anchor cast from lead just wasn't heavy enough.
