... And the rocks are smooth and gray

And all the woods and the valleys rang
With the Chorus they daily and nightly sang, β€”
"Far and few, far and few,
    Are the lands where the Jumblies live;
Their heads are green, and the hands are blue
And they went to sea in a sieve.

    Ah, Edward Lear!
    "
    The Owl and the Pussy-Cat
    By Edward Lear
    I
The Owl and the Pussy-cat went to sea
    In a beautiful pea-green boat,
They took some honey, and plenty of money,
Wrapped up in a five-pound note.
The Owl looked up to the stars above,
And sang to a small guitar,
"O lovely Pussy! O Pussy, my love,
What a beautiful Pussy you are,
    You are,
    You are!
What a beautiful Pussy you are!"

    II
Pussy said to the Owl, "You elegant fowl!
    How charmingly sweet you sing!
O let us be married! too long we have tarried:
But what shall we do for a ring?"
They sailed away, for a year and a day,
To the land where the Bong-Tree grows
And there in a wood a Piggy-wig stood
With a ring at the end of his nose,
    His nose,
    His nose,
With a ring at the end of his nose.

    III
"Dear Pig, are you willing to sell for one shilling
Your ring?" Said the Piggy, "I will."
So they took it away, and were married next day
By the Turkey who lives on the hill.
They dined on mince, and slices of quince,
    Which they ate with a runcible spoon;
And hand in hand, on the edge of the sand,
They danced by the light of the moon,
    The moon,
    The moon,
They danced by the light of the moon."

They don't write 'em like that anymore!

While trying to find one book on line, I found another I had forgotten I'd had, of Edward Lears' nonsense poems, this one printed in 1938. Only recognized it by the inside cover. Sadly that one has disappeared long ago (probably in the flood with the other one.)

    Re - Apropos JB
The days when nonsense ruled Doug and we had fun, πŸ˜‚ I read the 'Walrus and the Carpenter' and 'Jabberwocky' only a few months ago so as to top up my slowly depleting humour tank Used to have 'The Big Book Of Nonsense Poems' (original illustrated 50s printing) when I was kid but it was destroyed in a garage flood (along with my fathers' 1940s RNZAF gazette). Had hundreds of poems and was about 2" thick and was a real pity to loose them.
You will remember these ones from Ed Lear and Lew Carroll -

    Long years ago
The Dong was happy and gay,
Till he fell in love with a Jumbly Girl
Who came to those shores one day.
For the Jumblies came in a sieve, they did, β€”
Landing at eve near the Zemmery Fidd
    Where the Oblong Oysters grow,
And the rocks are smooth and gray .........

Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
    All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe …

and hundreds more. Must hunt out a copy.

    Apropos JB,
"β€œWill you walk a little faster?”
said a whiting to a snail.
β€œThere’s a porpoise close behind us,
and he’s treading on my tail."
    ....
Will you, won’t you, will you,
won’t you, won’t you join the dance?”

    Lewis Carroll.
Puerile nonsense or very clever allegorical word / homophone play with a social comment background?

    Hi Bill,
I am glad you liked it.
As you say a good sense of humour is defiantly required at the moment.
