Several years ago I had the great pleasure to observe the Captain of a cruise ship, TUI Mein Schiff 1, perform the same manoeuvre in Port of Civitavecchia. See sat pic. Not bad for a 269m 77000 ton ship! On the sat pic you can see how narrow the harbour is and where the cruise ships 'parked' backwards.
I had virtually a 'Captain's POV'. We had a cabin right forward just under the bridge on the port bow. Now then, where did I put the videos....?🙄

The beauty of water jets Martin, some of the new ( 2017) pilot and lifeboats are using NZ Hamilton jet units now for better maneuverability. The jet units can even allow the boats to dock sideways, (as seen in your vid).

I see one of the latest UK lifeboat hulls was designed by a 24 yr old RNLI architect! Pretty capable boat!
