About this boat

Because of my love of the Fairey brand of boats, I had to get hold of a Veron Huntsman 28, and this is one of two that I now own.
The Huntsman 28 is in my opinion, about the prettiest of the Fairey range of boats, even though some of the others are better sea boats.
This is the one of my model boats that I want to get on the water first (eventually! 🙄)

    Hi Will,

Why not set yourself a target - such as to get the Huntsman 28 ready to drive by the end of this month?

That should focus your attention - especially as you have so many other boats to work on - and (of course) many other “real life” things that have to be done as well !

I just need to have a look at them all Bob, and see which requires the least amount of work to become a usable model, then go with that, no matter which one it is.

Too many projects, a lack of time, and needing to prioritise jobs in general is my enemy.

    I'll get there, eventually 🙄

Maybe you could try tossing a coin to eliminate various models until only one remains - and then fix that one !

…..or choose one that has very little work (of the type that you fancy doing) and get stuck into it.

You could run your Huntsman 28 without repairing the side screen if you didn’t fancy making that repair at the time…….and as soon as you see it running on the water it will give you all the inspiration to need to rush back and fix the side screen 😂

Hope to see you afloat sometime soon Will,

I need to give the port side screen and surround a little TLC, but yes I agree Bob, this would be a pretty easy one to get 'working', or maybe the Stiletto, or ....🙄

This could be your first model to get into the water Will.

It looks like all it needs is for you to install some fresh working radio and ESC with your choice of battery and get it going.

Not too much work to do to get it running, and once you start to drive it you will wonder why you hadn’t done it a lot sooner.

….but I would check the girl on the deck to make sure she is sober before letting her loose on a moving boat - she looks positively unstable 😂

You had a tranquil childhood in a lovely house set in surroundings that most if us can only dream of Will.

Your friends may not have been close enough to call on quite so easily, but it doesn’t seem to have done you any harm and the other benefits are the ones to remember.

    Very happy memories Bob.
Yes the nearest village was 1.5 miles away, so I didn't have friends 'next door', but I did have great fun down there, especially once I was old enough to go out on the water on my own. 😊

That looks like a lovely location to grow up in Will, and ideal for playing with your model boats for you and your Dad.

Happy days and good memories eh?

Having a lake right beside, or even very close to the house would be fantastic.
I guess my childhood home is as close to that as I'm going to get.

This is a picture from the 70s showing the old bungalow that was knocked down when they built the current house, it overlooks the river Cleddau.
This is where my Dad (💔) and I used to run my Perkasa.

Any “model” boat that big would need a trailer to tow it to the water and launch it from too!

There use to be a local chap that brought his very large scale model boat to the Southport club many years ago, and he would sit inside it and drive it around the lake!

I will see if I still have any photo’s of him with his boat. I think I may have one showing him sat in it as the superstructure is lifted on over his head prior to sailing around the lake in it.

Sounds like it would be a nice strong boat, perfectly capable of making full use of the available performance that a decent sized 4 stroke motor could provide.
Sorry to hear that someone had the gaul to do that. The least that they could have done was to keep in touch, even if it was only now and then.

Yes, especially as he wanted to make a start on it early last year and I pulled all the stops out before we went to NZ for a wedding. But there you go. He was going to fit a 4 stroke engine which would be nice.

I added in some extra frames and stringers to reduce the span of the ply skins and help with forming the flared bow and if I was to build another at 31" I'd use these drawings - maybe a Sport!

I would as well Chris, but I can't imagine that happening with me.

60", wow, that would've been a lump of a model, but with enough detail, would've looked amazing on the water I'm sure. Shame that person hasn't had the decency to keep you updated on progress, if any.

    I'd rather buy a full-size Huntress Will! 😂

I modified my Huntsman 31 drawings for a guy who wanted to build one at 60 inches. Haven't heard how he is getting on with it though.

Chris, there's a chap on Mayhem who has built a few boats at around 1/4 scale that he can sail/motor with him on board/laying down inside.
    Imagine a 7' H28, a almost 8' H31, or a 8.25' Swordsman, or for Bob, a 7-8' Rapier 😉

Good thing about building at 1:8 is that they are easier to detail and fit things in.

And if you can get hold of a Veron Huntsman 28 along with kits being available for the Huntsman 31 and Huntress then that's three of the classic Faireys that can be built to that scale.

A Swordsman would be a bit of a monster though! 🤔

Your 28 is one that I've always liked when I've seen videos and pictures of it. It performs really well, and does cope with a chop extremely well.
That's interesting to read, what is your reasoning for regretting not going twin shaft/prop rather than single?

I only dip in and out very occasionally now as I'm into rc planes, but cant help being drawn into any posts about the Huntsman 28, especially the Veron. Mine hasn't been wet for two years now! Its heavy, but is so nice to use, especially in choppy conditions. My only regret was not going twin screw👍

As much as I really like the look of the 42" Veron Huntsman 28s, I do want to build a 28 that's about 28" one day. My Huntress kit is 23", so a 28" Huntsman 28 would sit nicely with it, even the 34" Huntsman 31 wouldn't look too out of place.

It's either that, or I'm going to have to build a bigger Swordsman and Huntress to go with the Veron 28s 🙄😜👍
One day, obviously, as everything is "one day" with me.

If I do build another Huntress it will be at my preferred scale of 1:12 and will be a Captains Boat. I also want to replicate the external rudder.

It will be a nice addition to my other Huntresses.

Never say never Chris, and I can’t fault you for wanting to build anything related to the Rapier due to its outstandingly good performance on the water.

if the water-jet propulsion does not go to plan - just bung a prop-shaft in it and enjoy the true white water Rapier experience!

As a dedicated Fairey fan, it almost hurts to have to admit that the performance of my Rapier is probably better than my first love Fairey Swordsman!

……but I do have a couple of Swordsman hulls very close to completion that I will be making white water with, and doing my very best to make them perform as well as the Rapier….better would be nice, but that could be wishful thinking !

I'd be tempted but I'm trying to be strong at the moment by returning to my earlier builds and it would be great to get one finished!

I really want to make a start on my Stiletto/Rapier based water-jet project but even I think it's crazy with currently having seven models at different stages! 😮 So I'm resisting about even thinking about another build. With those seven and my two DM built Huntresses I will have nine Faireys!

Go on Chris - give it a go !

    I will if you will……. 👍

The 34” Huntress does drive very well and its size will make a good performer in our UK weather 12 months of the year when our smaller size craft wouldn’t be able to sail safely.

A 12 month Fairey - just what you need !

What takes the time with most builds is if there are any fiddly bits and detailing including different colours.

The Huntress in its basic form is a simple and straightforward build and I reckon one could be put together in a couple of weeks if the time could be put in. Windows could be simplified initially by not having frames and glazing on the inside like many of the classic designs. No, I'm not going to put my money where my mouth is! 😂

It sounds like I need a Huntress in my collection Will - I just wish I had the time to build one.

I bought the special edition Model Boats magazine that featured it and have read though it several times.

When I visited the local Bury Metro Model Boat Club there were two Huntress models looking good both on and out of the water.

“Rochdale Keith” was kind enough to let me drive his Huntress for some time during this visit and I was very impressed with it.

If I could find a good used example I would jump at the chance to buy it so I could get it onto the water straight away.

The Huntress was the last design from Dave Milbourn a great servant to the model boat community and just before he died, he sold me the paints/stains that he used for his prototypes as he had some left over.

@Chris, from what I've read so far, great article.
I picked up a copy today and although I haven't read it fully as yet, I did skip through a few bits of it in the car whilst waiting for SWMBO to return.
I will have a proper read of it all tomorrow when I get back home.

Chris, I haven't seen the latest copy of Model Boats magazine, I'll have to get to the shops and find one.
Also, i do have a Huntress kit (Sarik I think) that my wife bought me for Christmas a year or two ago, but you'll be shocked and surprised to hear, I haven't started it yet 🙄

Bob, it is a nice sized model for coping with the UK weather and some swell, especially considering i may be using it on the river in the future.
I will add it to your topic as well.
Yes Bob, it and the other one are both Veron kits.

Jumpugly, yeah, the 28 is a very pretty boat in my opinion, and one of my favourites. Being 42" in length, it has a presence to it, even off the water.

Thanks Bob. Having done a lot of research and collecting all the build and kit drawings for all my own builds I thought it would be of interest to other Fairey enthusiasts and provide a good source of reference.

I couldn't find a stockist selling the Model Boats magazine anywhere in the Southport area Chris so I sent away for my copy that features your "Fairey Tales" 🤣 and have found it very interesting!

Well done for writing it and getting it published in Model Boats magazine 👍
