mad as a mad thing.. running a Vapex 3300nimh and the performance is brilliant, carefull use of the rudder is required at full chat! smooth as a smooth thing, turns on a sixpence when running slow (Motor: Graupner speed 600 8.4v) (ESC: mtronics 25a) (10/10)

Aerokits 40" P.T. Boat restoration
started the strip down, as usual things aren't quite as good as they first looked, the propshaft, rudder, and scoop are set way too far aft. the shaft has been fixed In position with a pool of fibreglass and resin which fills the bay where the propshaft enters the hull about an Inch deep at the keel.
I may have to just cut out the old shaft with the angle grinder.. the old running gear has now been removed, the motor which still works Is manufactured by "Jaky" Its quite a sturdy piece of kit but not one I am familiar with. I don't think I will bother with the batteries either..
the boat has definately had a Diesel fitted at some time In Its early life, you can see the hole In the transom for the exhaust, and I can smell that "old diesel" smell now I have disturbed everything.
twin shafts and twin graupner 600's or twin enya 19's still not made my mind up.

Aerokits Sea Commander
well the two weeks Intensive workshop activity has paid dividends, It got It's bottom wet at the Southport meet for the first time (ever) since It was built 40 years ago and left on top of a wardrobe to "warp properly"
not finished but very presentable.. It goes really well on Its speed 600 8.4v on 8 cells (9.6v) Its fast and rock steady! just need to reduce the rudder throw a little as It Is too sensitive to tx Input to be smooth
love this boat.. Its a delight to sail... must get round to varnishing the decks and throwing a few fittings on It.
great day at the southport meet and It was first outing for another Commander rescued from a wreck and finished In dark blue to a very high standard (get those spray rails sorted soon) so thats another two old Aerokits boats back on the water

thanks All
do a search on vimeo for Sunderland and you will find an excellent video by vimeo user AK68 of the next outing and flight of the Sunderland in much better weather conditions... I just cant work out how to post the link on here..?
the water level camera intro is excellent.. then I throw the Sunderland around a bit as I get to explore its flight envelope... not very scale but great fun!
then after a couple of water landings (including the odd bounce) I slow things down for some nice slow passes... you can hear a vibration from one of the motors caused by an out of balance prop and a loose motor bulkhead, and one of the dummy exhausts ejects itself from the airframe
so all the usuall prototype gremlins for a scratch built model

an historic moment captured In minature..
my restored 1/16 scale fireboat on the water with the ultimate fireboat accessory...
my 1/16 scale flying model of the Shorts Sunderland flying boat!
must be the first time In 60 years the two were seen together on the water
86" scratchbuilt electric Sunderland was test flown 10th March 2013 In really awfull weather conditions 10mph wind with 15mph sheer crosswind around 70 degrees to head wind. It was raining quite heavily as you can hear the rain splashing against the side of the camera, model Is very very light only weighs 6Lbs without flight batteries and got tossed around like an empty carrier bag
so no apologies for the fight against the elements during the test flight.
but It flew In way less than Ideal conditions

if its "that old" and is a 60's/70's built model that had an I.C. engine fitted..
I would recommend you "glass-cloth" the outside of the hull..
models built during this period tend to have been built with bio-degradeable glue! (cascemite/ boneglue. etc.) show it water for the first time in 40 years and your boat will revert to kit status and basically become unstuck! if the wonky glue doesn't do it then the diesel/glow fuel used in the 60's will have undone all the joints from the inside-out anyway!
enjoy your restorations and read as much as you can on here

Hi
I use a single 8cell Nimh pack, and cut a hole in the main vertical bulkhead (the one at the back of the main roof below the windscreen) so my batterry pack sits under open deck area floor - midships
my sea Commander is fairly light at 4 3/4 lbs without battery. the battery adds another 1 lb bringing the total to 5 1/2lb.
it balances (fore-aft) at the back of the aft main cabin window.
waterline... I just guessed what "looks right" and its 70mm from the top of the deck at the bow and 60mm from the top of the deck on the side flank of the hull at the stern.
do make sure you fit the spray rails along the chine of the hull and keep them sharp! they do a tremendous amount of work lifting the hull and clearing the bow wave, and will greatly Improve the boats performance
hope this helps

๐ Fire Boat 34" Laser cut Window kits

at the minute I cant justify ordering another batch of window kits, I did the first couple of lots to help out other fireboat restorers on a non-profit basis.. seriously! I didnt make a penny and donated an amount to this forum for every window set sold.
then my laser cutter left where he worked and there hasn't been a direct replacement for him since.
it also meant I had to have a chunk of my own money sitting on the shelf on the off chance that somebody might order a set... not good!
then over-seas customers started ordering kits at the uk price and I was losing money all over the place with excessive postage costs etc.
is it worth the hassle.....? sorry guys... no!
so at the minute I have just got too much other stuff on

cheers Dave
looks like the fireboat was developed just too late then! I am researching sunderland/solent flying boats at the minute as I am building a 90" electric flying model sunderland at 1/16 scale (same scale as 34" fireboat)
the RAF were really quick to dump its flying boats at the end of the war, many serviceable sunderlands and catalines just had the plug pulled and they were sent to the bottom of various lakes and lochs without ceremony.
sad really!
at least we keep the memory of these wonderfull craft alive with our models
thanks

chatting with another fireboater on sunday about flying boats and fire boats. the question was raised..
did our vosper crash tenders get commissioned Into RAF service? and If so, when, where, and for how long?
which led to more questions..
why was there only two of them built? were they deemed unsucsessfull?
who crewed them (RAF/Navy/Civilian)
what would the crew be wearing?
just wondering... as you do

I am utterly speechless!
I asked Bellrock models to quote me for the production of my laser cut window kits for the fireboat and sent them MY cad files...
they were too expensive and I found a cheaper laser cutter
they are using my cad designs which are copyright to produce these kits (that I sell cheaper)
I spent weeks and weeks all laid out on this forum refining the designs
please be aware Bellrock models will be hearing from my solicitors and must stop production Immidiately
oh I do hope they used the last revision cad files I sent them as there are a number of quite significant errors that were held back from them to safeguard the final production version

๐ Fireboat prop
13 years ago by
๐ฌ๐ง dbninja (
Chief Petty Officer 2nd Class)

ok
if your boat is an "original Aerokits" boat? ... the hole for the propshaft is already there! by design!
the main keel was supplied in two pieces.. the piece from the bow to the prop shaft.. and the piece from the propshaft to the transom. a pair of keel "doublers" were glued either side of the gap in the keel where the propshaft passes through the hull...
so the hole should already be there and should just want "easing" with a round file to accept the propshaft of your choice.
send me a private message and I will send you the relevent part of the original plan so you can measure back from the transom to the "existing" hole

I reckon that prop is a 45X judging by the amount of pitch, that is way too much. the speed 600's dont even like a 40X
the 40mm standard prop should sort it, will pop you one in the post at weekend

a 40mm standard pitch (not X) is about ideal for the speed 600, sounds like you are over propping that set-up, you need to take some load off everything and reduce your amps being drawn.
it will also increase your run time!
what size prop shaft are you using? if its 4mm I could pop you a prop in the post as I have plenty of spares.
I use the same prop on all my 600 powered boats.

I use a planet T5 with the standard (non marine) receivers in all my fleet, I think its six rx's I now own, its been 100% reliable throughout..
however!
I use Spektrum in all my aircraft and heli's as most of the ready to fly stuff has built-in spektrum compatible rx's
I would with hindsight have chosen spektrum over the Planet system for my boats as there is so much more available for a lot less money. I am in fact going to equip all future boat projects with Spektrum.
spektrum compitaible receivers are available for รโAยฃ5.99 off the internet compared to รโAยฃ15 each for the Planet items.. thats nearly 3 for the price of one!
just my 2cents worth

give the boat a good run at speed and bring it in off a high speed run, check to see if the motor, wiring, or speed controller are getting too hot
might be the speed controller dropping out on the thermal overload if the resistance in the system is increasing

mmm
the memory dims.. had a wee solid wooden pond yacht.. cream hull with a green pinstripe and keel, and a clockwork cabin cruiser by "marx?" around 1965?
oh thats only nearly 50 years ago ๐
was always an airplane fan first! built and crashed most of the Keilkraft/Mercury/Frog control line and free flight models of the 60/70's... radio control was only for the very wealthy
first "proper" boat was given to me by a school mate, his dad had died a few years earlier and his mum was having a clear out
my mate Ian gave me a loverly Aerokits 40" patrol boat with a Frog 349 diesel... cos I knew about models and engines!
ran it free running for several very happy summers before the diesel fuel did its worst to the wooden hull and it got binned..
happy to say I now have two of them in my collection, one is ready for a straight forward restoration, the other needs a lot more!

sorry your controller couldnt take it... the curse of the blue hong kong controller strikes again!
I only ever tried one of those and funnily enough....
I use mtronics 20 or 25 speed controllers in all my speed 600 powered boats, the one in my crash tender has hundreds of hours on it and never a problem in fact none of them have needed replacing.
as for prop size, try a standard 40mm plastic 2 blader from j perkins, dont be tempted to put a 40X on as it just gets everything hot and kills the duration
anyway.. the boat was looking excellent on the video.. well done
