Bulwark Stays by Mikep Commander   Posted: 2 months ago
Very interesting Doug not to go on and on Since the seaman’s story’s I was told are way to colorful for this site, but your mention of Oman reminded me of my birthday August 1944 my old man told me he was in Oran unloading and on the 11th of August a bird flew in to his cabin that’s my birthday. Have a Good evening Mike

Bulwark Stays by Mikep Commander   Posted: 2 months ago
Thanks for the kind words and history my farther was a engineer on merchants libertys and Victory’s WW2 all battle theatres Murmansk the lot. John W Brown www.ssjohnbrown.org in Baltimore USA.

Bulwark Stays by Mikep Commander   Posted: 2 months ago

Deans Robert E. Perry Libertyship by Mikep Commander   Posted: 2 months ago
Thanks for the kind words Sanddancer. Your City of Eli looks very nice so far. I just added some detail to the Hull I used 1/4” aluminum tubing and fiberglass filler to add fillets. I saw the added stabilizers on the Fleet Scale hull for there Liberty ship. I have there 1/48 Flower Corvette hull and it is really well made heavier gauge then the deans and very well detailed including rivet detail.

1/48 Flower Class Corvette by Mikep Commander   Posted: 4 months ago
Preparing to build a 1/48 scale WW2 Flower Class Corvette, just recieved the hull from Fleetscale excellent quality also purchased from them was the prop shaft, prop, and stuffing box and rudder. The materials and craftsmanship on these are priceless. The motor is a MFA/ combo drills 12v D.C. pt No. 457-RE800 and I plan on using a Viper marine 40 amp Mtroniks speed control perhaps a little overkill.

Emma C Berry Schooner by Mikep Commander   Posted: 4 months ago
The kits came with the tapered masts. I did have make one of the masts over as it was warped. What I did was purchase a 1/2” hard wood dowel marked the center and smaller diameter on one end then used a small razor plane to taper it to almost the shape I needed then cut the lenth just a bit longer so I could fit it into my 1/2 drill chock fastened the drill to my work bench and used it like a makeshift lath then used sandpaper to smooth and shape the final taper needed. Hope this helps Mike

Emma C Berry Schooner by Mikep Commander   Posted: 4 months ago
Very nicely done l have built two Emma C Berry’s one free sail the other r/c with auxiliary electric motor the both sail nicely. Sterling also produced the Yacht America in the same scale size as the Emma C Berry. I have that as well set up with r/c and auxiliary power. I’ve raced them against each other about equal in speed. Both have removable keels.

Steam whistle sound with smoke by Mikep Commander   Posted: 4 months ago
Just pondering how one would set up and sincrconize a simulated steam whistle. Since I’m not running on steam I could use smoke from my smoke unit and of course a steam sound module. Any ideas as how To do this? My thought was using the RAM ship whistle which works with a micro switch. One servo would control both the whistle and at the same time release squeezing off neoprene tubing would allow smoke to issue out the whistle. Anyone thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Sloop Gypsy -1940’s Comet Kit by Mikep Commander   Posted: 4 months ago
The Comet Gispy Sloop was the first model boat I built in 1950s and sailed at a local park in the Bronx at Crotona Park the pond at that time had row boats for rent on the weekends and was called Indian Lake. I have over the years collected two of them one I built the other is still in the box. Thanks for the memory’s. Mike. Just found a photo of my Gispy Sloop free sailing.

Deans Robert E. Perry Libertyship by Mikep Commander   Posted: 4 months ago
Yes Deepdiver, the rudder is offset on the and liberty and made of cast concrete in two sections for fuel efficiency which I understand saved thousands of gallons of fuel, since I,m not worried about the mileage I’m just going to simulate the rebar on the rudder for scale affect. I foolded a brass sheet over into a streamline air foil shape and sandwiched a piece 1/8” brass rod for the post. Just a point of interest the American aircraft carrier based Corsair had 2 degrees of offset built into the vertical Fin as well as a rudder trim tab to compensate for the torque. I just returned from Baltimore where my wife and I took a 8hr day trip on the John W. Brown one of 3 remaining working WW2 Libertyships.

Deans Robert E. Perry Libertyship by Mikep Commander   Posted: 4 months ago
Started building Deans Marine Libertyship Robert E. Perry finished Lenth 54 1/2” beam 7 1/2” weight 35 lbs. Power is Deans motor Falcon 3671 6 volt 1500rpm 3.19mm shaft and prop 147-18 brass propeller 50-L-4bl-M4. Kit is very nicely done all fittings and hardware are included with the kit. The hull is detailed and I have lined the inside of the hull with 2 x 2 oz. fiberglass cloth and resin to give it more rigidity. I have installed the motor and prop shaft along with the rudder which I replaced since the kit supplied rudder was cast resin and only had a 3/32 dia shaft, I’m sure it would work fine but felt better with something a little more substantial. Added 5 lbs of ballast I used shot and installed sub floor in hull. Equipment installation and deck fitting, added 1/8” plywood as deck and styrene on top.
