    Thanks Doug, Martin,
That's a great little boat and worthy of all the praise. I would be chuffed to bits if I could build such a wonderful model.
Well done and three cheers to you.
    Cheers Colin.

Well done Martin, finally getting the bum wet.๐Ÿ˜Š Surprisingly maneuverable and fast (Skipper had been on the rum at some stage I think though - probably celebrating the launch๐Ÿ˜‚. Perhaps we should name this size of boat, the Covid "Puddle Class"๐Ÿ˜?
Thanks for the video assist Doug, now we just need a larger pond and a vid we can put in the media section (wonder if these vids can be converted)? Deserves a decent vid on a pond.

Well done Martin - so incredibly maneuverable - you will have to give her a run on bigger waters sometime - as long as you check water-tightness.........

My little Lindberg Tug is not much larger and copes surprisingly easily with what would be "Hurricane" seas at scale - much better than a lot of bigger boats in fact - so as long as you fit a bit of poly foam flotation and make sure she is watertight there should be no trouble .

Pity Im so far way or we could run them together............

Hi JB, That's what I did last time๐Ÿ‘ But without going round the houses to YT though.
This time JFF I simply posted them directly via 'select files'.
Seems to work if the vid file ain't too big, which at that resolution ๐Ÿค” it ain't.
Ta for posting on YT and the gallery.

I just want to say a big thank you for all the fantastic comments i have received.
I certainly got a much bigger response than i expected.

    I was truly surprised.

    Hi Guys,

    Well here she is finished.

It was at this point that i realised i had forgotten to put a light in the wheelhouse.
Unfortunately now that the wheelhouse is all glued in i cannot change it without damaging it.
As i will not be using this at night i donโ€™t think i will worry about it.

A little more tinkering might be required so next is ballasting, basin trials, that sae trials in Big Blue.

All in all besides a few swear words i have enjoyed making this little Tug.

Now i must get back to working on U552 or HMS Cottesmore. Maybe!

Yes i did use an Airbrush and the paint colour was a little bit of Blue and a bit of Green a bit of white and a bit of grey Humbrol mixed. (Using up old paint)

    Hi Marky,
I made the lifebelts by gluing a few square layers of plastic then drilling a hole in the centre and smoothing and rounding it off.
I then placed a tapered paintbrush handle through the hole and filed the outside edge round and again sanded all the edges.

    Hi Joe,
Believe it or not i do sleep LOL!!

It dose not take long to make something like this.
It is mainly cutting and gluing.
The glue is normally dry enough to take a little bit of rough handling after about twenty minutes.

Somewhere in my little workshop i have a tiny model based on the Smit Tugs that i made some years ago.
    She measures 1" in length.
I mentioned this to Ed (figtree)a few weeks ago but as yet i still have not found it.

Navigation Lights and Mast running light.

To make these LEDโ€™s look more like Navigation lights, I file off the domed top than super glue some scrap plastic to the top, this prevents the light shining out through the top.

When the glue has gone off i file around the led to get the required shape.
After painting they look a little better.

    Ed,
You don't cut them, you file or sandpaper the tops off.
240 grit, wrapped round a block of wood to keep it flat, does the job in seconds.
Don't take too much off. If you expose the diode electrodes you'll ruin it.

    Hi Ed,
Depending on the size of the LED's most of them i just use a needle file or some sand paper on a block.

Some of the bigger ones i cut them with a junior hacksaw then file and sand.

    Hi Guys,

A good friend sent me some plans for a different Tug so i will be using some ideas from them.

Again using plastic from a Margarine tub.

Just a little word of warning, if you plan on using Margarine and Ice cream Tubs it is best to sand the surfaces as the shine tends to stop the liquid poly glue from doing it job properly.

Marked out the windows and doors and lightly drilled a 3mm hole in the corners of each door and window then cut out the insides with a scalpel.
Filed and sanded to the right shape.

I went together well considering this Margarine tubs plastic is about 0.5 to 0.7mm thick.

Made a fitted the funnel and forward stowage.

Beginning to wonder where you get all the margarine tubs from Martin - do you get your friends to save them for you?

And then you work your magic on them ............

    Hi Colin,
Thank you very much for the complements.

I must admit i am starting to get a little better at recycling some of these plastic containers.

The biggest problem is to get the material thick enough for some of the jobs.
The only way is to glue layers and to make sure that the joints are staggered when making the longer lengths.

    Hi Red,
    Thank you for your complements.
Yes i do find some container on my front doorstep.
My wife has shown some of her friends photos of some of the things that i have made, the next thing you know a few more containers arrive.

You cannot make big things form the plastic due to the amount of plastic that you can recovered, but by joining and layering and staggering joints you can make something descent.

As for "bungling amateurs" It is I that is a bungling amateur, As I say i am not a model maker i am a Tinkerer.

" if i did have one i would be trying to figure out a way of using the plastic from the tubs as filament."
Just make sure it's a thermoplastic Martin!
Most food containers are though; polypropylene family; Recycle code #5. Look for a PP* code on the bottom๐Ÿ˜ฎ
Thermoplastics can be deformed with heat (as the name implies) and pressed into a new form. PLA filament being a typical fairly low temperature variety. Surprise surprise๐Ÿ˜‰
The opposite being thermosetting plastic, which is 'set in it's way'. Heat it and it just decomposes or chars.โ˜น๏ธ๐Ÿ˜ญ

Sooo! What do do we need?
1 A hopper, to be filled with shredded marge tub, (shredder could be the missus' meat mincer๐Ÿ˜) feeding a
2 Heated holding tank feeding into an
3 Extrusion unit (Could be original from the printer or separate if simply manufacturing filament to feed the printer), consisting of -
4 Pressure unit; hydraulic or electric piston ram? or constant pressure unit?, and finally
    5 Extrusion nozzle.
    6 Output cooling fan(s) and Take-up Spool.
OK you 'tool making guys' - Over to you!!๐Ÿ˜‰
Oh yes! Graham we will need you for the process controller; temperature controlled operation of the feed mechanism, input level monitor, flow valves between stages, extrusion unit temperature and pressure, cooling fans on the output and take up spool control! (That's all ๐Ÿ˜)
    Cheers, Doug ๐Ÿ˜Ž
    PS: Forgot to mention-
Now I also have a nice gearbox left over, ideal for 'funzioni speciali'!!๐Ÿ˜Š

"Beginning to wonder where you get all the margarine tubs from Martin - do you get your friends to save them for you?"

I have a stack about 8" high waiting for despatch Red๐Ÿ˜‰
Just gotta sort out a few resistors for Martin's servo mod projects.

BTW: to resolve the mystery of why his modded servos work as speed controllers-
Both Servos and ESCs work using a train of variable width pulses from the receiver.
The wider the pulse (milliseconds) the longer the On Time; i.e. volts are applied to the device.
In the servo this is used to cancel out the error signal from the feedback loop, i.e. the little pot attached to the output gear.
This 'error signal' is the difference between where the servo IS and where the transmitter is telling it to go. Thus the motor turns to reduce this error to ZERO.

If we take this feedback loop out, i.e. disconnect the feedback pot from the gearbox then when we move the throttle stick on the TX the pulses get longer and the motor starts to turn.
Since there is now no Error signal to cancel out it just keeps going until the throttle signal returns to stop. More 'stick' = longer pulse = longer ON Time = more speed.
(Is evrybody 'appy? ... Yer bet yer life we are!๐Ÿ˜Š)
Pull the stick back for reverse and the pulse train goes negative thus reversing the polarity of the volts supplied to the motor.
With me so far? Or all fallen asleep? ๐Ÿ˜ด๐Ÿ˜ด๐Ÿ˜ด๐Ÿ˜ฎ
Took apart an ancient and HEAVY Sanwa servo last night and the board could be candidate for my micro tug ESC. It ran the proposed motor (off load) at full chat off 3.7V (1S Lipo) drawing about 800mA.
That's something you have to watch when using a servo control board as a switch or ESC. HOW MUCH CURRENT CAN IT HANDLE?
Most mini / micro servos are only designed to drive teeny weeny motors of low torque so only need a few hundred mA. OK for a a few LEDs or a micro model drive motor but don't overtax them or ๐Ÿ’ฅ๐Ÿ˜ญ (Gonna try one with a 600mA Smoker!๐Ÿ˜‰)
When I've got nowt else to do (around August 17th 2021 I guess๐Ÿ™„) I'll repeat the test with a scope hooked up to show what I mean.
    Cheers All, Doug ๐Ÿ˜Ž

    Continuing with the hull.

This thing seems to of taken over and is preventing me from working on U552.

I have to try and get everything to fit inside before i glue the deck on, as it will be very difficult with the deck on.

Glued the two speed controllers to the inside and some tabs to stop things moving about.

Test fitted every thing in place.

It was at this stage that a bit more swearing took place as the one and only small servo i have stoped working.

After stripping the servo down i found a broken wire on the PCB.

So now back on tract with the tests.

Everything worked well and the deck was then glued on.

Quite a bit of tinkering was required to get this looking like a proper hull.
    Added stiffeners, slots and fenders.

I temporally slapped a bit of paint on the hull at what i thought would be the waterline, i was not far out.
So at the moment it looks like she will float LOL!!.

    Hi Guys,

My speed controllers are made by using a couple of servos that had striped gears.

I remover the motors but left the pots attached to the PCBโ€™s as i have no more resistors to replace them with.

Again using scrap plastic from the tubs i made a couple of cases to house the bits and pieces in.

Cut down a couple of wall plugs to use as knobs so that i can zero the motors.

Servos can be used for a few different things.
You can use the PCB in it to control lighting, small motors, also for 360Deg rotation and variable speed for say a radar or a winch.

The servo PCB is in its self is a small speed controller and a two way switch.( you can operate two lighting circuits)

I removed the motors that were part of the servo because i am using the small pod motors from a toy submarine.

I'm really interested to know more about using servos for speed controllers, motors and 2 way switches, without taking it apart (never a good idea for me ๐Ÿ˜Š) I'm finding it hard to envisage how they work, Years ago a gentleman in a model shop mentioned that to me, not wanting to look completely dumb I just bought the servo smiled and said oh aye, I'll try that. could you give me a better idea of how to do that please.

There are videos on 360 Deg rotation and how to modify the servo.
Also how to control some Led lights using the servo PCB.
