Transmitter and Receiver

One of the advantages of living alone. I hav had 4 wives/domestic partners...all with too much to say abt me spending $$$ on models, taking up room for my trains, weekends flying, drydock space for vessels etc. NOW if a lady visits & says anything negative, she doesnt get invited back for a while. This usually puts an end to any complaints. ⛵🚤 & this is my 28ft TENKARA extendable fishing rod for retrieval altho i did buy it as an Amateur radio antenna mast for my balcony, 7th floor...another one of my 3 hobbies at age 75

I had a Falcon but was never good with power planes, ok with gliders tho off a histart, a latex rubber tubing staked, then long nylon line attached, used like a slingshot to launch. I usually came off the histart at 200-300' then wud thermal almost a mile hi. Twice my plane was attacked by circling hawks, thats how you find the thermals to climb. We lost our Brampton field when Chrysler built an auto plant on it. Then a new wife got in the way of clubbing. My 4th wife just passed so now i hav lots of time for the boats all over the diningroom in a 1 bdrm apt

I had similar fir airplane Goldberg falcon Nick Ziroli taught me to fly it in Hauppauge NY. It used to be ITT antenna farm n Marconi before that. It is an industrial center since. Land was cleared and we flew. Small glo engine. Next was galloping ghost then finally a digital system Kraft 4 ch on ham radio freq. 54 MHz. Next was first Futaba and finally Spektrums when they appeared. Somewhere in between Kraft n futaba was HealthKit. Most bought from Ziroli’s friend Larry of Larry’s hobby shop Commack a land mark. I think I bought his first 4 Chan Kraft ir futaba. Larry was a fun guy he even flew to Massachusetts when we moved in his real piper tripacer with his wife for lunch. How many from Long Island remember Larry? N Nick?

My 1st RC rig was a single channel, 469MHz, required a Ham Radio licence. The single function toggled thru left & right rudder with centreing in between. The escarpment was powered by a rubber band. 4 pulses of RF to cycle thru. You had to keep aware of how many times you unwund the rudder rubber else you cudnt steer back to shore. The 22" boat used C-drycells for a small brushed motor. Then in the 1970s I got 72MHz 4-function 4-servo for 100" Standard class glider. By 2002 I was using NIMH flightpacks in RTF...too lazy to build 90hr balsa kits. I still prefer NIMH as safe, altho I have a few LIPO packs in used boats that I have purchased from club members. I am in METRO MARINE MODELLERS in Toronto, Canada...a great bunch in this club, very welcoming of newbies, great advice source

I agree with using the term function in place of channel but I do not see this happening. Old habits are hard to break

I too enjoy that dual rate switch especially on fast electrics for maneuvering back to dock...altho dual rate also reduces rudder throw, not just the speed/throttle. On another note I wish everyone wud use the work "function" not channel. Yes our radios use multiple channels, that is, multiple frequencies in RF, but the individual "servo" pinouts on the receivers go to functions such as rudder, esc/throttle, lights-on, monitor nozzle/spray gun etc etc⛵🚤

I personally like the Planet TS2+2. It is 2 channel with to auxiliary channels for say switching on lights etc. I particularly like it because on the top left of the transmitter there is a switch that allows you to switch to a tailored second rate. This allows me at the flick of the switch to lower the power to the electric motor when my grandson is having a go. Otherwise it is a bit too fast for him. Brilliant! It is also quite cheap to buy and you can also buy extra receivers. Hope this late reply helps. Cheers Duncan 😊

Hi Jim
I have followed an almost identical route and have had a Radiomaster for a couple of years.
Recently upgraded to Edge Tx from Open Tx and now have full touch screen control. As you say the fact that you can use with almost all other manufacturers receivers means you can continue to use such kit and only need to remember one Tx.

Found this holds smart phone so you can draw switches n settings then take a pic of it. Set iPhone in holder with picture shown of settings. Maybe a way to do the nite function? I found no note holder for sale Another idea is the antenna plastic flags we used to use to identify frequencies. Sketch setup on paper n glue to stiffer card board . Glue that to few flag? Clip to transmitters small antenna? I had Ben using masking tape bits n a sharpie pen to Id switch positions. Also I use same switches for aileron, rudder positions for all craft but lately I have 3 positions switches for flap, vertical direction and on heli So I have to retake at times. I like the note example that was in pic here.

The note holder is a great idea especially for use with limited memory as to what switches control what functions.

Hi Nick D,
over the last 40 or so years l have had and used most of the available brands of transmitters and receivers.
futaba and sanwa were the best at that time then 2.4 came onto the market and so opened up the choices of radio control.
I personally started to use the FR sky equipment and found it to be very reliable when using it for distance ie, aircraft.
A couple of years back a manufacturer produced a transmitter called Radiomaster l bought one of these it had the capability of binding with almost any 2.4 receiver this was a godsend saved taking several tx,s out to control different craft.
I have used this TX for the last couple of years on both aircraft and boats and found it to be very reliable.
They are a little more expensive than the flysky TX but because you can bind it to almost any other 2.4 you can have a choice of receiver's. And if you are like me with a collection of Futaba Spectrum, Frsky and the odd thing that came with its own transmitter l now only take one transmitter out.
good luck and stay safe. Jim

Lew,

I like the ‘note holder’. Great idea. I might have a go at making something similar but it will have to be fabricated as I don’t have a 3D printer.

I agree, the FlySky radios are great value. I have the FS-i6X and a pile of different FlySky receivers. Does everything I need from 2 channels on a sailboat to 10 channels on my Crash Tender (the note holder would be very useful for that to remind me which channel does what!)

I agree, the "best bang for the buck" are most of the FlySky radios. I have four of the FS-i6X transmitters and even more receivers (plus several other brands). My son has a few himself. They compare to Spektrum in many but not all features.

I have one Spektrum radio, a DX8G2 transmitter and two AR8000 receivers. Just one AR8000 receiver costs much more than a complete Flysky 8/10 channel system.

As for comparison...

My boat was 95% underwater for over 20 minutes. When I got home the receiver would not work so I bought another one. A WEEK later I decided to take the Spektrum AR8000 apart dried it out and blew out the dirt that seeped in. It works fine!

Compare the two transmitters it feels like the DX8G2 is about twice the weight of the FS-i6X. The Spectrum's joy sticks have a much better feeling to them.

I did not buy the Spektrum as it was given to me. If I needed another multi-channel radio I would not hesitate to buy another Flysky. They are reliable and do the job for me.

In the photos I added a 3D printed reminder note holder. There is a narrow slit in the top so the note can be swapped out.

Have had a Flysky 10 channel set for several years. So pleased that purchased more receivers and now converted almost all my fleet to it.
Several of my colleagues have bought them too, all with good results.

The best bang for the buck is Flysky FS-ST8 with the TS-SR8 receiver. The transmitter is 10 channel with S-bus capability. The receiver is 8 channel but it is also S-bus capable. Easy to program and use. Best part is the price
of around $90.00 for the standard version and a little more for the upgraded version which gives you the ability to have both sticks self centering. Do not let the Flysky name fool you it is not just for aircraft, I use it on my 42 inch tug and my fleet of Tamiya 1/14 scale trucks. Bought mine from Hobbyconcepts.net and he has the upgraded version that has the sticks already modified to be self centering.
Hope this helps and just IMHO

Lots will say SPEKTRUM. IMHO it depends upon what country you are in, & what frequencies are useable in your country. In Canada we use the 75MHz & 2.4 GHz frequency bands. It also depends upon how much you can afford, & whether you hav a lot of boats or not. I have legacy ships on 27MHz & 75MHz with dedicated tx-rx pairs, and in theory each of my 2.4GHz receivers cud use a single Tx. Its convenient to install a rcvr in each boat rather than move one rcvr among 3 or 4 vessels of an afternoon sail session. ⛵🚤⛵🚤⚡

What are the best Transmitter and receivers on the market. And what makes should be avoided like the plague.
Do Transmitter and Receivers have to be matched to the same make.
