Lew, hard to imagine what you & others had to endure & then overcome. But last week after my wife & I saw the 2024 hurricanes’ remaining affects in Passa Grille in St. Pete’s Beach we confirmed our understanding. The old salts in New England have a saying they rely on; “Hide from the wind, run from the water”. No doubt in my mind as we’ve been affected by storm induced floods.
Very glad to hear you’re able to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Stay, safe.

Lew! After all this effort you'll do the last 5 weeks on roller skates! We're still sending the good vibes. When it's done an audio tour with pix is in order!

Mike & Doris, thank you and others for your best wishes. Pretty crappy spending the night through this windy storm waking up to puddles of water in most of the rooms and no power. Having lived through it (I'm 80) was an experience. Others were (and some still) worse off, but this was more than enough for us.

I designed my home well over 50 years ago. It stood up well to the hurricane force wind with very little damage. Most was to the trees outside and of course the floors from flooding. Not salt water, but too much rain and wind. It was a "100 year" freak storm.

The house is now clean and almoat ready for new flooring. Most of the house items are now in the garage, porch, and our three spare bedrooms which are 8 inches above the rest of the house and were not flooded.

I hope to be finally up and running by my 81st birthday (a nice present) in five weeks.

Good Morning Lew,
If I were a fairy, I would fulfil 3 wishes for you.
Such a storm is incomprehensible to me, as we only know small storms.
But they are already devastating enough. .
We, my wife and I, send you a big box of courage, patience and hope.
Keep your head up, it will be fine.
We are proud to read your interim reports despite all the misery.
Our thoughts are with you,
Michel-C and Doris M.
if you don't ask, you won't get an answer!

[Post Milton, almost 4 months]

I like to "stop by" the MB site to check on what you all are doing. My home is still a wreck, with most of the flooring torn up (bare concrete now). Hopefully this will be rectified in the next few weeks. All of my models and work shop gear is packed up.

Unfortunately, I have a double whammy to deal with. Can't build or sail any model boats because of my home, plus the dock we use at the park was severely damaged. Unbelievably great weather and no rc boating! I had to set aside being the SSMBC meet coordinator.

So keep those great posts going... it helps me look forward to getting back into the hobby.

As Lew is well aware it is not necessarily the height of the water that really counts, within reason of course. Just a few inches of water can ruin the flooring and cause damage to the walls and any thing sitting on the floor making it necessary to remove the water damaged areas of the walls along with the insulation to prevent mold.

Ronald,
How about two photos, garage door and one by the front door. That's the real way of marking a waterline! Nature made. Lew

Lew! We are happy you are in the clean-up stage. Mark that water-line for us as per Ronald's request. If you've forgotten how. Please see illustration below for pointers. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Forgive the little bit of Model Ship Builder humor...😉😆

Lew, is there a water line mark on the house to indicate how far it came up before receding ? If not could you show us where on the garage door?

Well friends, today marks two weeks since disaster hit us. We are still trying to sort and clean up. We are staying at our sons house 30 miles away.

I attached a photo of our home and you can see the debris piling up. Every day adding more.

Today I think I will be getting into "model boating" as I will need to move some models to a better location so we can start floor removal.

Keep yor posts on various subjects. Helps distract my mind from this ugly mess.

Lew! Some of our local NYSEG (NY State Electric and Gas) guys went to North Carolina where my nephew is and then bounced down to to FLA. Good souls one and all! Your son is right, go easy!

My wife is doing well. Let night my foot and ankle were swollen again. Too much lifting yesterday. My son wants me to cool it for today.

Yesterday evening we finally got our power back on. One thing I must say these U.S. power grid workers are great. This group traveled from North Carolina (500 miles away) to this area.

Also, I agree about others are worse off. My son's (the one we are staying with) co-worker lost his entire home. It was blown over while he was in it. This was Huricane Helene, the previous one, last month. But when you live on a beach in Florida you have to expect that eventually something not good will happen.

I'm so sorry to hear of the damage and devastation to your home and neighborhood. As has been said, you are alive, safe and well.
I hope you can rebuild, and reflect on what could have been much worse. Hang in there. Good luck!

I don't always register where people live, but your message reminded me that I have relatives in Florida that I should check on.
Thankfully you are safe. However the reinstatement will take time and cause much grief. I wish you the best Lew. Hang on in there ! 😉

Florida Hurricane Milton updates

I created this topic because I have been posting my updates on other members topics.

So the latest is we have been staying at our younger son's home about 30 miles away. Our home is a mess with 80% of the flooring destroyed with an unknown amount of furniture damage or destroyed. We have a larger home so this is a lot of damage.

I spent today extracting furniture, flooring, and more, yet it looks like there is no end to the process. I dropped insurance coverage when my insurance company went out of business. People were scamming the insurance companies that they needed new roofs due to "storms" when in fact the needed replacement anyway.

Insurance cost in Florida are now very high and will go higher yet. In 50 years I never filed a claim. But now... go figure!

Thank you all that have wished me good hopes. No time for model boating (meets or builds). That will probably be many months away. I will check in occasionly to keep my sanity.
