I just couldn't settle........... Nixie the submarine is off the shelf. If I can remember how to get a 40 meg radio set to work, I might see if I can get this thing to operate as a shark

Wow I'm back to remembering my desire to have a shark with my orca. I tried everything, towing, shark at side, shark at front, and it never hit the spot. I then thought about an rc shark.
At the time Glynn guest had a plan I'm model boats mag for a simple submarine called nixie. My plan was a dorsal fin over the tower, I wanted the fin to surface and dive. It seemed a simple build, but nixie has currently Sat on the shelf for several years. I just couldn't get it to operate correctly.
I see now on ebay etc there are rc sharks quite cheap, but I bet they don't work in a lake, more for paddling pools and bathtime!
If anyone can build me something I would take it!

Hi GaryLC, Iโ€™ve had some success with the shark I made from a block of insulation foam, with the outside fibreglassed. This I can tow with two piano wire rods. I found one rod was too unstable and the shark had a mind of its own. Two rods keep it quite rigid. 2.5 kg of lead was added for ballast to get the shark to sit right in the water. The Orca has a turning circle of around 2 mtr when solo, but with the shark attached it is terrible about 20 mtrs. After much pondering Iโ€™ve come to the conclusion that the shark needs a secondary rudder to help with steering. Imagine a 2mtr long model boat with small rudder in the centre of the hull, this is in effect what I have at the moment.

Hi Rogal, and thanks for the extra photos which were very much appreciated. Your hard work and dedication has certainly paid off, you have a very realistic looking Orca to be proud of. I don't know what your next project may be, but what about a radio controlled great white Orca, using a bow thruster type electric motor, so as there is no prop to be seen. The pelvic fins could act as diving planes, and the tail could be hinged to act as a rudder, as per the submarine principle. I appreciate you would need a second operator for the shark, but that is a minor detail considering the complexity of a working shark. Maybe it is feasible to buy a realistic shark that you could convert. Food for thought though is it not? Regards, Gary.

Thanks for your comments GaryLC. I ran and ran the movie many times to authenticate the finer details, some parts contradicted each other then I found that 3 boats were used and the continuity wasnโ€™t always spot on. Well thatโ€™s my excuse for straying to my own version in places. Here are some more shots of the cabin internals, I really enjoyed this part of the build.

I just had to reply and congratulate you on a really fine and detailed build, it certainly looks very convincing and authentic. I love the lengths you have gone to, plus the first Jaws was the most convincing, see if you can get hold of that sound track from the film. Regards, Gary.
