here is something very satisfying about rescuing an old, neglected model and bringing it back to life.
Every repair teaches a new skill—planking, painting, rigging, electronics, or simply learning how another builder approached a problem.
I also like your "Island of Misfit Toys" analogy.
Looking at the photos from the recent regatta, there were beautifully restored classics sailing right alongside brand-new builds.
Once those "misfits" are back on the water, nobody remembers how rough they looked when you first found them. Keep rescuing them—you'll be surprised how much confidence you'll gain before starting that first scratch or kit build.
