here is something very satisfying about rescuing an old, neglected model and bringing it back to life.
Every repair teaches a new skill—planking, painting, rigging, electronics, or simply learning how another builder approached a problem.

I also like your "Island of Misfit Toys" analogy.

Looking at the photos from the recent regatta, there were beautifully restored classics sailing right alongside brand-new builds.
Once those "misfits" are back on the water, nobody remembers how rough they looked when you first found them. Keep rescuing them—you'll be surprised how much confidence you'll gain before starting that first scratch or kit build.

Huge crowd of spectators!

Nice collection of unique models both whimsical and replica .

Our recent outing at the Nathan Phillips Square in Toronto was a huge disappointment for the scale group. The city had drained the pool for FIFA and built a small soccer pitch in its place. In doing so, the fountain was damaged and now the water drains out. We arrived to find less than 2” .

@ColRay It was a great day. Perfect weather, nice turnout of club members and spectators, Sousa band playing at the other end of the pond, free ice cream!, etc.

@roycv I sort of cut it off, but there is a Parrot perched on the left side of his hat.
As far as cutting off a leg below the knee, I'm pretty sure he won't go for that ... I mean there are only 2 lighthouse night events during the year, that'd be a pretty significant committement 🤣
He is a professional firefighter by day, he probably thinks he needs both legs for that job.
But I will pass your suggestions on to him ..... LOL

I am afraid your Pirate will have to work on his image, he looks too much like a politician. Needs to look more like a used car salesman but not quite as predatory. Also Pirates need the help of a large cooperative parrot to enhance the appearance. A small sacrifice of a a leg amputation, only below the knee would show dedication and be very performative for the role, crutches would be a crowd pleaser too!
