Launch day has come and gone. Overall I was very pleased with the way she looked on the water, but may I apologise for the quality of the video.
First off, I was unable to get 1/200 scale dragonflies or a moorhen, which somewhat detracted from the realism, but most importantly, my ace photographer Octman was unable to make it.
I promise to do better next time.
I also learned that this is primarily a display model and it is so easy to damage or bend the many tiny parts.
However, she has given me much pleasure both on the slipway and her short time on the water.

Doug, Albion Alloys do as small as 0.3mm TUBE and wire to go in it. I've used it for working model piano hinge! Albion sell to dealers from whom you must buy. They don't sell direct.

I discovered it at my local model railway shop, which carries quite a few useful bits and pieces for model boats.

Sea trials planned for later this week or early next. Hopefully Octman will be ready with his camera to video the event.

Looks great, I like all that detail!
Must be very time consuming.
But in the end looks awesome!

Almost at he end of what has been a long, sometimes frustrating, but very satisfying build.
As the masts and spars are very thin, using my usual fishing line as rigging was going to cause problems with getting anything like the correct tension.
What I ended up with was 0.45mm nickel silver rod. The fineness of the rod gave it a natural 'sag' for radio aerials and it is rigid enough for stays and supports.

Hope someone finds this useful.

you will see that there are enough incorrect items to drive you mad. I have decided to get it as accurate as the kit allows.
I have installed a Graupner 6v smoke generator in each funnel with a computer fan at the base of each - yet to be tested. I propose to switch them on and off with a receiver controlled switch.
I would like to be able to colour the smoke but have yet to find the correct formula.

Steve: I found a cheap way to mechanise the two aft turrets of my H class destroyer Hotspur, using one servo with a pulley, a couple of smaller pulleys on the turrets, about 2:1 ratio to give at least 180° rotation at the turrets, and a spring loaded nylon cord around the pulleys. I'll see if I can dismantle her over the weekend to make some pics. I plan to try something similar with my 1:350 Hood, also Trumpeter and also excellent detailing.
Another way is to use one micro servo per turret, connected with Y cables if you want a synchronised Broadside; AB and XY turret. Then use the servo travel adjustment at the TX to maximise the rotation.
You can then move all four on one channel or two channels for 'Independent Firing" fore and aft. I will use the two pots at the top of the Turnigy i6 TX for this. On Hotspur I used the left stick left/right.
I plan to do this in my Graf Spee, Belfast, Hood and Bismarck. Maybe also the ack ack turrets on Ark Royal!?
Will knock up some test jigs sometime 🤓

Hi Steve, looking very tasty with the wood on now, have you a thought on the funnels, been informed that the rear funnels is incorrect, but you can get an aftermarket one, just another thought on the smoke theory, wonder if one of the smoking gizmos from the 1/16 r/c tanks could be an option, I wonder if Doug has a thought on this.

Great detail can't wait to see the sea trails video...

For those of you who have never built a Trumpeter kit, I can strongly recommend it. Although Hood is 1/200 scale, the detail is fantastic and an awful lot is fitted into the 1.2m length of the model.
I think a wooden deck is a must, together with an upgrade kit for the guns, giving them metal barrels etc. I'm not sure if the more expensive upgrades are worth it as there is so much provided in the kit, including a lot of photo etch.
I tried to mechanise the main turrets but found it beyond my skills, so I am now concentrating on the finer detail.
I have at last managed to obtain the 2kg of lead which I estimate is required for ballast. (I calculated this very scientifically by floating the hull in the bath and using a 1.5kg jar of frankfurters).
Sea trials are planned for the middle of next week.
The attached images show progress so far.

I stay out of discussions on things which are not my forte; e.g. yachts and other sailing craft, apart from admiring the woodwork involved, or subs - where I am still at the bottom of the learning curve, but I've been a fan of WW2 warships for years and enjoy researching the history and building them.
Been fiddlin' with computers since the end of the sixties! They got a lot smaller since then 😁

When I analyse the element (look at the code behind the display😉) the link is three lines long.
It's just shortened in the post display. Just depends on how much space is made available to show it, esp the width of the box. if I scrunch up the code display the link is shown with even more lines .

The transducer idea was sparked off I think by a video of 'Noisy Thing' in an RAF launch - by PMDEVLIN I think.
If we'd seen your thread we might have said that fitting the transducer horizontally under the deck is not the best idea. That also directs the sound upwards and the deck is too stiff, due to coamings and superstructure etc, to resonate with the transducer.
Recommendation is to fit to the hull on either side, wired in series so that two 4Ohm transducers give the 8Ohm load impedance needed by most amps.
The idea is to bring the hull sides to vibrate thus acting as a 'speaker cone' and project the sound sideways across the water and not straight up. They should be fitted to the largest flattish area available for maximum effect.

Yes I was that person with the transducer( amongst others). I originally had a speaker inside the lower superstructure of the tug, where there are window openings, but without any glazing, so in theory the sound should have been able to escape. The engine sounds were OK but the other sounds, on a different sound module, were only audible if the model was more or less within arms length, which I thought unsatisfactory! Aha I thought, use a transducer attached under the deck, other people seem to get satisfactory results. I didn't. I think that there is too much clutter on the deck of the Southampton,which is not that big, preventing the hull from doing what it is supposed to do. Next idea is to conceal a normal speaker on the deck disguised as a pile of pallets, with lots of lovely gaps to let the sound out.

On my destroyer (1/72) I have an oval speaker, about 4 x 2" under the aft torpedo mount. Cut the deck out leaving just a cross in the middle to support the mount (which ain't bin built yet🤔) and covered it with aircraft fabric and painted. With a 10W amp it's OK close to shore but out in the middle, ca 50yards, almost inaudible - especially against the row of the Biergarten behind me! Doug 😎

I have the same sound system in my Sovereignty and I put the 4" speaker under the compass platform. I then drilled many small holes in the deck, which sounds terrible, but doesn't look amiss (even better with the 'monsoon roof' on) and works well.

If I can fit 'em in I will try the little transducers stuck to the inside of the hull, to use the hull side as a sound board to send the sound sideways across the water and not up into the sky.

I'm very much the novice with smoke so although the 6v gives enough for one funnel, a fan may be necessary. Real smoke rises of course and I didn't realise that the generated stuff falls as well.
There is enough room in the funnel, but as you say, no updraft.
The other complication is that I also want to use the funnels to let the sound out for my Shockwave2 sound system.

with the 'reservoir' I mentioned I meant a 'smoke reservoir' or a sort of collector, i.e. a wider section of the updraught tube, bulbous or upside-down funnel, to concentrate the smoke and then 'chuff' it out with the fan.
Seems the modern versions of the Graupner gennys are very different from the one I bought 20 years ago!
Mine has a narrow glass tube underneath which dips into the aerosol cap oil tank and feeds the genny by capillary action. Means it last for ages (well all afternoon anyway😉) on a 'tank' full. As I understand it the maximum fill (0.8ml) of the new one lasts about 8 minutes at 6V / 300mA.

I have some of the new ones now and see what you mean by 'charging' from above. But, how do you propose to fit it? if it's a tight flush fit in the tube won't you lose the updraught chimney effect cos it can't draw cold air in around the genny tube?
Yep, the 24V put me off as well. Rooky mentioned using a voltage 'booster' (i.e. doubler) but these are notoriously inefficient and if you're running on 7.2 or 7.4 main batt .....!?
Just my thoughts, must experiment with the new versions.
BTW: my static bench tests back then were also quite impressive, stunk the kitchen out 😡, but out in the open air with a bit of breeze or under way at speed it didn't look quite the same 🤔
Be interesting to compare notes when we both have them operational!

Sorry to hear about the non arrival of your deck. I must say that I am very pleased with the way mine fits and looks - I have done all bar the 'rear deck' and as I said, provided you start off accurately, the rest follows.

Hi Doug. Fitted 6v genny into funnel which I can charge using the syringe through the top - therefore, no reservoir required!
Bench test suggested no fan required though picture doesn't do it justice.
I'm quite pleased with the effect so will order another 6v for the second funnel. I propose to switch them on and off with an Rx controlled with from HobbyKing.
Pity that the 'smoke' is not darker in colour - there must be someone out there that has solved the problem?
I've had a look at the link you sent. I see they need 24v and are quite expensive.
I also se that Ed (Figtree7nts) has been in touch re morse 'message'.

Doug mention the smoke maker from Marks Model Bits, I have one in a tid tug OK for a 1/32 boat but too big for Hood, the theory is using a nebuliser to agitate the water molecules to make a mist (steam)I now get mine from https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New Ultrasonic Mist Maker Fogger Water Fountain Atomizer Air Humidifier 24V.
Hope I got the link correct. it is powered by 24v but you can use a voltage booster to get 24v from 12v, and you could make it fit in the hull with your own design water tank.

Re your smoke generator -
I hope you don't want to lay a smoke screen!
Several years ago I fitted a Graupner smoke genny to my destroyer and hoped to feed both funnels with it. No way! 🤔
According to instructions I fitted it in a 10mm tube (alu) in the forward funnel, with the wick in a 'tank' made from a large aerosol cap, and fed it from the drive battery (12V SLA, 2 x 6V 7AH) via the Gear switch on the TX and a home made decoder / relay switch at the business end.
First: it takes a little while to get 'steam up', second at best it produces whisps of smoke, and white so it looks more like steam. 🤔
Have experimented with 'additives', e.g. graphite, but have not yet achieved real black smoke.
To increase volume when I refit the destroyer I have a second genny for the aft funnel and intend to build 'smoke reservoirs' under the funnel tube and drive it all with a 6v cooling fan from an old PC graphic card.
The 'chimney effect' alone is not enough 🤔
I hope that in this way I can increase the volume so it looks a bit more realistic when 'getting steam up' or on 'Full Ahead Both'!

I was in Hamburg 1967 playing with a band at the Top Ten club on the Reeperbahn (learned a lot there), we used to go to a imbis next door to the club, the owner spoke a little english as I at that time spoke very little German. He told us a bit of his life story, he was on the Bismarck on sinking, he was picked up by the british and took to a pow camp near the Cadbury factory in England. He took a few of us to the B&V yard, and gave us a guided tour very interesting, he was call Fritz and he had a phrase he always used when we spoke of the war ' thats the vay de ball bounces', with a very heavy German accent. I spent many years in Germany and loved every minute of it.

Hi Peter, The Bissy was only in the Baltic for running up and training. in Unternehmung Rheinübung, foray into the Atlantic and the Battle in the Iceland Straight (sorry Denmark Straight), she would have had the normal light grey plus possibly camo colours, here, yer pays yer money and ya takes yer choice! 'As built' she would have been all DKM Hellgrau / Silbergrau (Light / Silver grey) #50 (that's the Lifecolor #UA 601) on the slipway. All the docus, vids and photos I have found don't seem to show any significant camo paint!? Only pic I ever found of Bizzy in camouflage paint is of the Graupner Premium model. Can't find any official record of it.
There is some evidence of cammo paint on her sister ship Tirpitz, but it didn't help her, she spent most of her life bottled up in a Norwegian Fjord where she got flattened by Lancs!

Re Enamel: Maybe attached charts will help you find an acrylic equivalent😉 I will use the Lifecolor 601for mine.
PS Bismarck had No later life!! One operation, one ship sunk (Hood 😭😭) and that was that! Can heartily recommend the old 1960 Kenneth More film 'Sink The Bismarck' 👍 Stirring stuff Old Chap, stiff upper lip stuff from the days when we still had a real Navy and hadn't swapped our overseas bases for 50 ancient rust bucket WWI destroyers🤔
By the by: during my 32 years working here (in Naval COMMS systems) I was frequently in the Blohm & Voss HQ in Hamburg, saw several superb yard models of their ships including Bismarck, and many photos, but never a one with camouflage.
PPS: as far as i can establish the 'Baltic light grey' was only used on the top sides of smaller U-Boats operating in the relatively shallow Baltic waters. Maybe also a few small combatants such as Schnellboote, Minenjäger etc.

on their lists, one light grey and one Baltic light grey, would that be the colour in later life of the ship? it's a pity that they are enamel paints, where lifecolour are acrylic, could you suggest the colours for my Bismarck.
