Thanks Pete,👍
I'd forgotten those🤕
Handy thing with Shapeways is that the guys who print them can usually rescale to the size you need - within reason!
A word of warning!
ALWAYS go for the Fine smooth plastic version.
The 'Frosted' versions have a slightly rough surface which needs smoothing with acetone or dichloromethane, which can also remove some fine detail.😠
How do I know? ... ☹️😭

My New Build - Milford Star

Hi Doug
Many thanks for the link - looks interesting. I have built up a collection of figures for my other boats (some spare) that Lemax do for the model Christmas village scenes - they have large fixed displays in our Garden centres at Christmas and when they finish with them I usually ask if I can have some of the people figures as they usually just bin them. Easy to re-style and paint but are mostly about 1:24 and 1:36 scale so no good for my 1:48 requirements.

Thanks for the comment - as for the crew, Caldercraft have always included scale figures in previous models I have built but not for the Milford Star. I have looked on-line for 1:48 scale crew figures to no avail at the moment and agree that it would 'complete' the boat build.
I did have some comments from my members that I didn't show any rust or weathering but as I explained I am not experienced in this 'art' and would prefer to strive for a decent normal finish rather than make a 'pig's ear' of the painting.

"Now a little deflated as I haven't anything to do, "
Oh no? Sure you do ads!
Such a fine ship deserves a crew!😉
She shouldn't be damned to be a ghost ship.😮
Cheers, Doug😎
PS Shame you didn't take the Missus with you. I'm sure she would have enjoyed a Maiden voyage😉
PPS I totally agree ref the 'weathering experts'🙄
All you have to say is; "But my ship is 'As Built'" 👍😊

My New Build - Milford Star

Well, I have finally finished my Milford Star albeit I am waiting for a small piece of red sail material to finish off and to complete the rat lines on the shrouds. On Sunday I took her (no not the wife) to our Club water and she had her maiden sail. She looked good and sailed well with no ballast adjustment needed and I received some great comments from members of the public and fellow members. Now a little deflated as I haven't anything to do, so cleared out my work room today and did some battery maintenance. So here are some final photos.

Know what you mean about not very good plans, I
built the Round table class minesweeper "Sir Kay" from caldercraft, I think they used the same hull for both ships, I didn't like the fact that they did not supply the plan as full scale, and some of the instructions were too complicated, where the was a simpler way of doing the job. but your Milford Star is building very nice, once all the fittings are in place, it will look amazing.👍👍👍

Cheers, Pete

Thanks guys for your comments. It has gone reasonably well but you do need to be a reasonable modeller to get over the small issue of lack of decent drawings, supplied fittings and timber/rod, etc. At least I have a good cache of most things already to use or adapt as necessary. However, it has been a satisfying build and a welcome part of my collection of Caldercraft model boats that I have built.

Another little update. Progress slow due to having to refurbish the bathroom - all finished now barring fitting the window blind unless my Clerk of Works (Wife) says otherwise.
I manage to grab an hour or so each day if I can and the superstructure is completed and painted and all handrails made, fitted temporarily then taken off for painting. There lies a tale ! I was going to batch spray them with primer, having fitted them on cardboard first. Started to spray them this PM and my spray paint can, already used it a few days ago, suddenly emitted paint that came out like soot. It was very powdery and when dry rubbed off easily. So I had to clean all the paint off - 10 sets of handrails ! Never had this problem before with Halfords primer so don't know what had gone wrong. Another can of primer required and start again 😥 A case of 1 step forward and 2 steps back.

Just an update - still working on my Milford Star, slowly but surely. I have basically given up with the so called instructions and just working things out looking at the drawing. Not working in any particular order and am constructing bits as per the time i have available each day. It should make a fine model in the end, I hope.

I to use and think CMB is a very good hobby shop to deal with. Good looking job and enjoy the sun as it does help when you can sit outside .

My New Build - Milford Star

Beautiful day today and a having a rest from work on the garden so decided to fettle and drill where necessary all the white metal fitting for my Milford Star. I then set to work on building the Anchor Winch which was easy and very similar to others I have done, then I turned my hand to the Trawl winch. What a pain it was - I have read the instructions time and time again and tried to relate them to the small drawing they provide ( I enlarged this and printed it out). I assemble it loose and had so many goes at it but finally ignored the instructions and worked it out for myself.
Lovely warm day sitting on the patio doing a little modelling - who says this lock-down is boring.

Re Cornwall Model Boats.
I can also from personal experience recommend CMB.
They have always been very good to me for items I have bought, and on larger items in the past have price matched if I have been able to confirm a lower price.
Would definitely recommend, and although they are mail order only (unless things have changed) they did let me go and collect my items and have a rummage around.
Regards Bill👍👍😀

I agree, Cornwall Model Boats are brilliant. I would also like to mention Model Boat Bits who I have always found diligent and helpful, SLEC who are great for timber and ply and Component Shop for all things electrical. I'd be lost without these companies.

Me neither here in Munich Rowen.🤔
The few model shops left around here now specialise in ARTR/RTR aircraft and cars/trucks🤔
CMB and Deans are both good companies to deal with👍

Just a sing out for a small Cornish company, that I hasten to add I have absolutely NO connection to. I live just around the corner from Cornwall Model Boats and yet until I built a Flower Class, I'd never heard of them! They are so friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. I have a few disability issues and they not only supplied promptly and competitively, but when I got stuck with an RC issue, they even set it up for me for no charge. So if you have a great little model supply company near you then why not sing out about it so we can all support our hobby suppliers.

My New Build - Milford Star

My wife has said that I have too many boats already (0nly 16) but during this Covoid 19 issue I was getting bored with working on the house and garden so after a chat she says "why not build another boat ?" Quick, she might change her mind so I didn't waste any time and ordered a Caldercraft Milford Star trawler at 1:48 scale from Cornwall Model Boats (delivered next morning).
So made a start and here are a few photos of progress to date. Hull cut to shape, ballasted out (barring minor final adjustments when finished) and now planning where to install all the electrics. I only do a couple of hours working on her each day (no, not the wife !) and no need to rush. Will update on progress as and when.
