Hi Isaac,
Argueably the best you can get is the Tamiya spray paint Hull Red (or Dull Red) TS-33. Its very expensive but unbeatable.
If you look at the pics of my Puffer, you'll see what it looks like in action.
Good luck,
Bryan

Hi Nick,
Have you discovered these? Quite remarkable quality. This one is 1:24 (photo attached), is destined for my next build, but they do the whole range at 1:48 and many other sizes).
They also provide STL files, but I've not investigated these.
Check out www.modelu3d.co.uk
Cheers,
Bryan

Many thanks indeed for the many and lovely compliments I've received. Its very heartening that the work is appreciated, though the Clyde Puffer is such a lovely kit its hard to go wrong.
Photos of the Danny Boy, my current build coming as soon as I sort them out.

Hi Wolle, Many thanks for the compliments, very generous of you. I'll be posting a few photos shortly showing my progress with the Danny Boy, as my comments provoked some interest. I've not done a build log, but have a few random photos.
What provoked me to write to you specifically was your comment about Danny Boy and Britannia sharing the same hull. I cannot confirm that as such, though suspect your correct. However studying them both, I believe they definitely share the same main superstructure (and wheelhouse). In fact were it not for the smaller cabin arrangement and skylights immediately forward of the main superstructure, they could be the same ship!
As mentioned, I'm not enjoying the Danny Boy build as much as I did the Puffer, and I'm not as pleased with her. She's nowhere near complete yet, but enough to show that on completion she won't be on display as prominently as the Puffer! I do wish you a happier voyage with her than I'm experiencing though of course.
i'm already contemplating my next build, and wish to stay with the 1:24 scale which suits me. Were it not so expensive (and maybe not as long!), it would be the St. Nectan, it appears to have a lot of lovely detail. But can I justify the cost....!

My first effort in something at this scale, 1:24, but for all my mistakes I love her, and am very pleased with her.
She's a static kit, and although she's designed to be motorised, I never had any intention of taking her down to the Gardens lake (as in Pavilion Gardens, Buxton, Derbyshire, UK) although I'm aware there is a flourishing boat club that meets there.
For the few that don't recognise her, she's built from the Mountfleet Clyde Puffer kit. A superb kit even if the instructions leave a lot to be desired. On that note, having so much enjoyed the puffer build, I'm currently building the Danny Boy Drifter from the same stable, but the instructions here are all but non existent. I'm coping, though this model isn't as good or interesting as the Puffer.
