HMCS ASSINBOINE (Ex:KEMPENFELT)
Hello everyone, today I acquired a model that I build 35 years ago. HMCS ASSINBOINE. At the time I built the model a friend on my wanted to get in to the hobby so I gave him this model. Well, it was in his barn for 35 years untouched until today. She needs cleaning up , I cleaned much of it today. I plan to clean and salvage what I can then repaint her. She is constructed with 1/32β plywood veneer over plywood frames. The hull was then fiberglassed and covered with .010β aluminum plate. The aluminum plating is a little corroded but with a little sanding it should be ok. She is powered by two Dumas 12 volt motors. The drive shafts are 1/4β stainless steel with one inch props. Iβm very happy to have this model again. Itβs banged up a little and a few parts missing but Iβm looking forward to her refit.
Before and after cleaning pics are attached. itβs a little strange looking at a model you build many years ago. The weathering is not the greatest but it is an attempt.

HMCS SACKVILLE
Hello All, I built this model of HMCS Sackville to the scale of 1/4" to the foot about 20 years ago. I have since donated it to the Maritime Museum of the atlantic. She was completely scratch built and RC. I have to admit i do miss having her so may be time soon to build a 3/8ths to the foot model of her. Before i donated the model to the museum she was on the set of the Canadian tv show Theadore Tugboat. You can see her in the opening scene of the show and in many of the episodes. Was a great opportunity to be part of the show.
Th Show was filmed in the basement of the cornwallis school in Halifax Nova Scotia.
Check out the link to the show,,, Very neat stuff.
For some reason the link does not save here.

HMCS ASSINBOINE REFIT
Beginning the process of refitting. Will be mostly a cleaning/painting project but will make some additional parts add to the ship. Today I cleaned the tail shafts and propellers/ hubs. The props are 2 inch Dumas props. Rather than use the usual drive dogs I machined flats to fit in the rear slot in the props . Looks much better the way this way in my opinion. I manufactured the cone nuts rather than use the out of scale nuts that are supplied with the props when you buy them. I made these shafts and nuts over thirty years ago.she had been in storage for all of that time.

Foundation Franklin Refit
Im beginning to do a long overdue refit on the Foundation Franklin. I built the ship over 30 years ago and is now time to clean her up and getting her ready to sail once again.
The first task is to disassemble the reduction gear, clean and re oil it.
The gear box is powered by a 12 volt dumas motor. The reduction is 5 to one. The top section of the assembly has the Dumas coupler. The bottom coupler is much larger and is needed to turn the 4 inch prop. I manufactured the unit to fit backwards in the model under the salvage hatch. The 5 to one reduction gives very slow speeds and is very quiet.
At full throttle the ship cruises wit a realistic bow wave.

Today Iβm working on the motor mounts. I will drill holes in the mounts then epoxy studs in the holes. Then the motor will be secured with nuts. The motor is a 550 aristo craft Manuchi 550.
It should be ok with the 2.5β prop I think.

I received some plans today from Peter Green Models in the UK. Nice plans , very happy with them. Plans are for a WW2 salvage tug, Foundation Josephine/HMS SAMSONIA. Also received plans for a WW2 coaster HMS SARD. I plan on building both of them beginning this winter. Both will be built at .385 β to the foot so they will be large models. The Josephine will be 78 inches and Sard will be around 55 inches. I like to build in the .375 to the food scale.

Nice weathering job, It really brings the ship to life. In my opinion weathering adds a lot to ship models. Makes them look as they should look.

π Prop Shaft

A little info on the prop shaft. Itβs 316 stainless. I recycled the shaft as it was a shift rod in an old mercury outboard. Itβs 5/16β in diameter and 9 inches long. I turned a 10- 32 thread on the prop end and the other end is 3/16β diameter.
When building the models I try to make the prop shaft diameter to scale with the original ship if possible. The groove you see in the shaft is the location of clip ring in its previous life in the outboard motor.

π Deck work

Today I made a wood ring to fit over the opening for the rudder access. It will be epoxied to the deck. The idea is to keep any water out of the hull that would go under the grating.
Itβs a very simple job really. I turned it out on the lathe.

Hello Barry, I did manufacture the propeller. I cut the bladeβs from 1/16β brass sheet and used a jig to produce the curve of the blades. I then silver soldered them to the hub while holding them in a jig. I checked the blade mounted in the atlas lathe. It came out pretty good. Itβs a lot cheaper than buying a prop. Iβm looking forward to seeing your next project.

π Bottom Paint, Decking, Grating.

Hello all, a little more progress today. Finished installing the wood decking, just need to sand and seal it. Got the bottom painted today and did some work on the grating at the stern of the tug. Will be painting the sides of the hull black in a day or so.
She will not look newly painted for long as I like to weather my ships.
Tomorrow will be making deck fittings and forward winch and ships wheel.

Hello, a little more progress. Iβm currently adding wood decking to the upper deck. I found a piece of teak I had for many years so I decided to use it for this project. The Doors are made of teak also. They are .750 inches wide, .033β thick. Soon I will make the door knobs.

Good morning, I have been looking at those plans but they are for a Harbour tug. Iβm looking for the plans for the Bustler class salvage rescue tug. She was 205 feet. There is a fellow on here βMarkyβ that was building one a few years ago but Iβm not sure if he is still building it.
