I recently found the cheap Chinese fairy lights a quick and easy solution for internal and deck lighting. You can lay them out and cut off the excess wire and they work for hours with watch batteries. At ยฃ1 a string its worth it. Then its merely a matter of connecting a microservo to the switch and you have remote on/off functioning. Some sets even have multicolour. Quite fun to work with. ๐Ÿ˜Š

I added lights to two of my large boats. All LEDs.

    But

In bright daylight they are not visible. Only at dusk are they visible to enjoy.

Also, I have another large boat 4 ft long, and I use bicycle flashers red and white. That made a huge difference and fun. Especially when the red is flashing constantly. Not scale, but super fun

Well.... pretty much completed the 1949 40' Chris Craft Challenger.
I tested all her lighting individually as I went along. And wouldn't you know it, The 3V rice lights that came in the navigation lights I made from balsa wood are sucking up all the juice. The other lights (mast, bow and interior) are all 3V LEd's. I guess they don't mix. I will get it sorted out later. I will add hand rails to the cockpit roof when I find some.

    Allessandro,

I made the mistake of leaving the glass tungstan filament lights in the navigation light inserts. The rest are LED so the tungstan lights suck up the power.

    Peejay,

The blinds are actually printed graphic lines from Callie Graphics. I added the down straps (pin stripe white) and just used a ruler to make a black line to simulate separation between the blinds.

Question, would an anchor be left on the wooden deck or be stowed away in a locker ? Say, under the bow in a foot locker.

Just asking, I know nothing about these beautiful Chris Craft boats.

So much attention to detail on this model, even the tight grain of the mahogany.

Looking forward to possibly meeting you when my wife and I are in Victoria May 18-21. We are riding the Victoria Clipper to Seattle in late afternoon of the 21st. A 2.5 hr trip at 34+knots!

Sorry all.... health and weather have been keeping from the shipyard. I am back!!! lol.

So.... I have completed the cockpit roof and installed it. I have made the navigation lights. As you can see I have made the port Stbd lights from wood( I resined them and then will chrome them.) I made up the stantions for the side stern railings and made up the railings. I also made a cushion for the aft doghouse (the boat I am modeling her after has brown cushions, but I think they are to hot to lay on in the sun). I also redid the cabin windows and blinds. I have added lighting to the wheel house as well. Ohhh and I intalled the porthole windows.

I know I have been slow on this one. I need to paint my aft cabin roof (waiting on weather). Then I can get the lighting sorted and mount it. Then I can put on her side rails, etc. In the meantime I decided to make her tender and davits. I made he mast and stern flagpole as well.

Had some time to put together the wheelhouse windows. I also built the fwd seat and the dog house. Nothing is glued down yet. I need to varnish the wheel house windows (stained them today).

I discarded the windows I made last post and built these right in place over paper layout. Worked much better

Next section of work. I added the rub rails to the hull. Painted her bottom. I laid her deck down and cut out and installed the fwd seating arrangement. I did not like the sharp rake of the cabin top to the front windscreen, so I curved that down to look more realistic. I mocked up some window frames for the wheelhouse.

Well...yes I have been busy on the build as well as getting house and yard winter ready. I will not post all the work I have been doing, but enough to get you up to speed. Last post I had the hull built and prepped. So I decided to get some work done on the cabin.

I decided that I would like the entire superstructure to lift off in one go, so that included rails etc. I made a base floor that would lay over the stern pulpit and have the fore cabin sit on the foredeck. The deck in between would then run level with the deck I will add later.

I cut the base and the roof the same size in width etc.. and left channels on the outside edge of the roof and deck for the cabin sides to fit in. Then I built the roof by gluing my cut frames to a 1/16 piece of basswood that was cut to the roof pattern. I bordered the outer edges of the roof with a long block of balsa on each side. (Trimmed the roof frames to fit the balsa). Then I layed down my roof with balsa sheet and sanded the blocks down to meet the roof inside them. This gave me a nice contour to the roof edges when finished.

Update Nov3 itโ€™s looking fine. I like the idea of removing the entire unit.

Getting ready for winter is required for those with a yard, house and responsibilities. My snowblower is tuned and ready, waiting in between the car n truck in the garage. Mulching leaves, spreading them on the gardens, yup lots to do.

    Pressonregaguardless...

Close.. I had the old 1940's kit. Balsa was just drawn out as templates (and sloppy). I cut a lot of new frames and traced the rest. I am using my mind rather than the instructions. I want the entire cabin to lift off including the aft deck and railing. The plans I copied from the old one in the box. I brought to a copy shop and they passed through a big machine.. was risky as the paper was very crisp. Didn't eat it though. But they drew these plans back in the 40's and they are not true or symmetrical. I have to use my dividers a lot to make sure each side is balanced.
